They have a similar simulation at Jordan HS (or they did when I was there). I wasn't in that class but many of my friends LOVED it. I guess we can't teach anything valuable in school or have any winners and losers.
It must be hard to be perpetually offended by things, even where there is nothing to be offended by. But, I guess some people just work really hard at it, like their job and continued funding depends on being offended.
Sorry if that offends anyone.
You have got to be kidding... I went to Bingham and know exactly what they are talking about. I never would have even thought to make that connection. These accusations are getting out of hand. Absolutely ridiculous.
So what do Nazis and the NAACP have to do with each other? I guess the NAACP is its own government entity now that can do investigations. Gotta jump on the coattails of Alta's story so you can get your own publicity.
The above 3 posts are highly recommended. Bingham students were learning important history lessons. Each generation needs to learn about the atrocities that can happen when following a dictator, like Adolph Hitler; lest we forget and let history repeat itself.
In one of my history classes, we had "Communist Week" and this was during the Cold War. We kicked it off by playing Monopoly with Capitalist rules (the normal and fun rules), Socialist rules (boring, no one progressed), and Communist rules (depressing). We had to behave like students would be expected to in Communist Bloc countries. It was very strict and not fun. We learned a lot that week, like appreciating the freedoms we are blessed with. And that Socialism and Communism is wrong.
Kudos to Bingham for having Dictator Week. The students will learn a lot and be able to recognize dictatorships when they see it. That's what you call, having a quality education.
Please don't take that away, NAACP. It has nothing to do with you.
Oh goodness, I can't believe that people are taking this seriously. Why is this taking up space in a newspaper? My brother is in that very class right now, I had the teacher for all 3 years of high school, and I promise that nothing even remotely close to racism is going on at Bingham. I actually know Bingham to be a very racially tolerant place. The article also failed to mention that the teacher was once named as Utah Teacher of the Year. It's a political science class. These kinds of things are going to be covered. The kids love it. Please stop looking for reasons to be offended. You're not helping anyone.
PS It's spelled Jordan, and I don't think "launching an investigating" is a great way to start your article.
Personally, I see this as progress. When was the last time the NAACP did anything to support the Jews?
We did activities like this all the time when I was in high school. They were honestly the best way I learned. Some of the lessons that were taught this way I still remember compared to the other lessons that were just take notes and read the chapter. These activities is what made history my favorite class in high school.
You've got to be kidding me. So there have been no complaints to the school and no complaints to the district but the NAACP is conducting an investigation? Is the NAACP the governing body now? If this parent were so offended why not complain to the school or the district before you go running to the NAACP? She is obviously just looking for something to be offended about. My daughter is a Senior at Bingham and is a "minority" and she has loved every minute of her time there. She has never been subjected to any form of racism whatsoever. Great school, great education and great administration! Please stop trying to find problems where there aren't any!
Now the NAACP is on a witch hunt!
We had a similar experience at Granger High school many years ago. IT'S NOT RACIST to learn about history.
Racism does exist, but when the NCAAP spends its time crying wolf over things like this, no one is going to take them seriously when something actually occurs.
I think the NAACP is looking way too hard for a cause today.
It seems the NAACP is looking for Relevance in today's society. The more they jump on these things the more irrelavant they become. I am surprised at the tone of this article and the inflammatory headline in DN. I find this barely news-worthy at all.
This is Jeanetta Williams trying to justify her role as the local leader of the NCAAP. You can only defend a position if someone is attacking it and so she has to make up enemies, or amplify fairly innocuous events, to defend against. We see this nationally as well as locally.
We see small groups or individuals doing outrageous things (Koran burning anyone?) and special interest groups amplifying the incident in an attempt to be seen as victims. We see this with the Alta High story, the Westborough (sp?) Baptist church, etc...
Too bad...Are there not enough REAL issues to deal with?
Everyone needs to stop. If you are looking to be offended, you will be offended.
It just amazes me that the NAACP is causing such a loud noise over this, when in their own race they have people that speak out as racism in their own race. lets be fair about this clean up your own race too not just the whites. They were being taught about history. Just another chance to cry wolf. It's how it has been now for a few years. I am Germany American and have always been a mintory, so NAACP wake up and smell the roses.
Students were reported to be "making arm signals similar to those used to salute Hitler."
You mean kind of like Tommie Smith and John Carlos did when they lowered their heads and raised black-gloved fists in a black power salute during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner at the 1968 Olympics?
I think the NAACP needs to top tilting at windmills...it's not healthy.
Question?
Is this starting to look like a Black & White issue? Apparently the Alta situation involved this. Now the NCAAP jumping on this one? Am I creating a thought or does it seem like it is turning into a B & W issue? I sure hope not. Society is so scared to learn the truth of our past.
Everyone sit in a circle, pass around the flowers, and join hands. Do you feel the love, the togetherness? Have we achieved harmony and oneness? Good. Now everyone sing.
Absurd!
History is ugly, filled with atrocities, messy, and it is not pleasant. History is also filled with love, heroes, and greatness. History is the subject of human existence in all of its forms. History should be taught in its entirety. Sensitivity and (Nazis) dictators? This combination does not work, much like the NAACP on this issue.
Shame on the DNews for trying to make another racist story at a high school out of absolutely nothing! The coverage of the Alta story was way beyond ridiculous and was blown way out of proportion, now this? Get real DNews, if you really need to cover the worthless NAACP then perhaps you should rethink your reason for existing.
