If WCC is so lowly, why can't Utah attract a coach from the WCC? Does that mean
Utah is lowlier than the WCC? Mark my words, WCC will have more
teams in the NCAA next year than the MWC. (The NCAA is a tournament at the end
of the year for teams who have a very good record - some Utah fans may be
unaware that there's a tournament at the end of the year.)
@hedgelog,It's pretty embarrassing for byu that a "high school
program" beat them last year. 17-16
Since you over paid chow, make him coach basketball, too. That's what other
high school programs would do.
I think Utah fans are very confused. They like to talk about how many meetings
Rose has had with the good doctor,(all undocumented) and then they bash on
Rose's program as being a one man show and very mediocre. If Rose declined
an offer from OU, I highly doubt he would take any offer from Utah. Or, do you
even want this "mediocre" coach:)
Maybe by the time the Cougars are in the sweet 16 next year, Utah will finally
have a coach. I guess the good doctor can fill in in the interim.
@MiPIf that is true then why did you feel the need to answer it?
You answered your own question D-hunter: BYU.
Well if Barret Peery's asst. coach experience was 'ok' at the U maybe a brighter
future is in store for Ute basketball. Let me explain...Peery was
just hired as head coach for Indian Hills Community College, a small CC at
Ottumwa, Iowa. IHCC has a long tradition of winning having won 3 NJCAA titles in
the last 12 years, with several 25+, and a few 30+ seasons to boot. Add to that
a few conference championships. Not too shabby for 'po dunk' Iowa
and I say that with respect as I've been to Ottumwa a few times and lived an
hour to the south for many years. They take their basketball seriously. With Peery's connections these 2 yr kids will be looking to transition to D-1.
Farm raised, corn fed Iawegians make good players... remember Kyle Korver? If D-1 coaches don't see the Ute coach opening as an opportunity, then
it's time to get some fresh D-2 blood. Maybe IHCC can become a 'talent pool' of
players and a coach! It's going to take time to rebuild.
Yes skippy we are enjoying this and we will keep enjoying it for a looong time
because the incompetence leading the ute basketball program is in such direct
direct opposition to everything wedgie, christina, howie, etc. keep telling
is.Some examples."One thing is for sure, dr. chris
hill will get whoever he wants.""Dave Rose will be the
next coach at utah.""Now that we are in the pac10 coaches
and recruits will be demanding to come here.""Our pac10
riches will be impossible for a coach to resist.""Utahs
unparalelled basketball tradition will net us any coach in the country.""We are in the pac10 now we will take whatever we want to
take.""Mid major coaches are not good enough, we will be
taking a national coach of high acclaim."There are probably a
million or two more of these but I think this gives you a pretty good sampling.
Who is it that has the more arrogant fanbase again?LOL
Hi Skippy,After seeing several Ute fans' posts about Utah's ability
to bring any coach of their choosing appear on BYU sports articles that had
nothing to do with coaching, I am just curious to see how they now justify being
turned down by coaches from the so-called "lesser conferences." In
this case, I felt it would be appropriate to address the matter on a relevant
article instead of trolling a non-related story.Perhaps you could
offer some explanations about why Utah is having such a hard time while so many
other "big conference schools" are already having offers accepted?
Hopefully Utah fans can soon grasp the reality that being in a so-called
"big conference" doesn't magically solve/improve everything.Oh, and thanks for the attempted dig about filling the Marriott Center. I
agree that it is not easy to fill a 20,000+ seat arena, yet the Cougars have had
great attendance for a long time now. As I haven't looked for specific numbers,
how has attendance been for the Utes lately?
That said, Lon Krugar is being reported as the new head coach of Oklahoma....Fresnogirl... I think Boylens biggest issue was that he couldn't
recruit, and the couple of players he did such as Marshall Henderson bailed out.
In the last year, Boylen has chased off half the team. Now most of those players
weren't good other than Henderson and Brown. So he couldn't recruit, and was
inconsistent if you ask me... (Lose by 30+ to SDSU, win at the PIT against UNM,
swept by AFA, etc)It'll take some time, but Utah will get it turned
around. Good programs go through bad times. Look at Michigan, Indiana, North
Carolina, etc. These programs run through these cycles. Its hard to stay on top
for years on end. It wasn't long ago that BYU went 1-27 in a season and 9-21 or
so a few years later. It will be turned around but will take time
and a little patience. Hill will need to be more patient with whoever our next
coach is.Go UtesUtah will come around.
hahahahah, I can't stop laughing....wow. Just wondering out loud here, but hows
that pac 10.2 coming along.
Seems to me cougar fans are having a great time speculating about Utahs
coach. They find a lot of happiness hoping Utah gets someone bad. Maybe
they are just hoping that Utah continues to go down hill? It really is sad that
there is so much hattred concerning these two schools. The good thing is, What
comes around goes around. It wasn't that long ago that the cougars were not
filling their gym to watch basketball. And by the way...you can keep
NeilT San Diego State is a great example. In his first 6 years
there, Coach Fisher did not have an impressive record, then the next year his
team had a winning record and did each year after. This is his 12th year
coaching that team. I'm thinking the SDSU fans are pretty happy about now that
they didn't call for his job after just a few seasons. Sometimes I wonder if
schools like Fresno State and U of U would be better served just waiting out the
contract. I admit I don't have a crystal ball, so I can't say if Boylen or
Cleveland could have started to put together better seasons if given the chance.
But I do think that Collegiate sports are getting less and less patient and
sometimes (like in SDSU's case), patience can pay off.
For all the smack about the WCC, U have lost to every WCC team you played this
year and have been turned down by 2 WCC coaches.
Wait a second here...we are in the Pac-10 now. I was told recruits and coaches
would be lined up outside the door. Have I been duped?
Utah B-Ball is not in shambles. Come on. How long has Fisher been at SDSU and
this year was the first NCAA win in school history. How long ago was BYU 1 and
nothing. Come on Dr. Hill. Have you ever heard the story of Acres of Diamonds.
The treasure is right here in our own backyard. Jeff Judkins, Morrill from
USU, both are right here and would have a great advantage recruiting in state
talent. What about the Montana coach. Sorry I can't spell his last name.
I just love this quote as posted by one of the more prolific ute trolls just a
couple of weeks ago."One thing is for sure in the end dr. chirs
hill will get whoever he wants."LOLYep that was
definately not well thought out.
Not sure who's more desperate here.Nil, for claiming Dave Rose is a
mediocre coach.orChris Hill, for offereing to pay a
"mediocre" coach $1.5 million. What does it say about the
PAC 12 Utes' basketball program when three coaches from the MWC/WCC have already
turned down the job?
Nil and BundySpin away, but bottom line is no experienced coach
wants to risk their coaching career trying to salvage that trainwreck on the
hill. Rose and Kruger were both offered $1.7 million per year to coach at
Oklahoma and both turned down the Sooners. Lon finally accepted when the Sooners
upped the offer to $2.2 million. Rose turned down a $1.5 million from the U, so
obviously, trading the MWC and the MTN for the WCC and ESPN/BYUtv isn't anywhere
near the concern for Rose that desperate Utah fans were hoping it would be.
The Rose rumors need to stop ... but the Roger Reid rumors need to start! I
heard that he met with Chris Hill to discuss succeeding Boylen!!
@Al BundyWell gee's Al. I don't think that line of thought is too hard to
figure out...First off you don't have a basketball program to sell... so you
tossed it to the sharks. Face it... You're BB team will be nothing more than
shark bait in the PAC... Who wants to coach a program with no future. And
Watch the WCC grow just like the WAC did post AZ & AZ State and the MWC did
with BYU, Utah, and New Mexico and UNLV. Gonzaga and ST Mary's are pretty near
the same level of play every year.
@Hawkeye79I'm sure Bennet didn't want to be the next UTE coaching
Sacrificial Lamb and certainly he's not out to become a martyr either. Utah
Basketball is and open invitation to getting creamed... this up and coming
season. The can of worms is almost open. It won't take long to realize that
Utah has been given a wakeup call that they were'nt at all expecting. That's
why the vacancy shingle for a new Head Coach is going to be hanging outside the
door for a while.
Rose Rumors need to stop. He has 3 more year on his current deal and they are
negotiating a raise and a longer deal. He already turned down
Oklahoma, NC state and Utah. He is coming back to BYUAs far as the
following Statement:It's no secret that Rose was not happy about being
thrown under the rug or At least we didn't sell our basketball team down
the river for our football team. WCC come on. 2 out of the final 4
teams are in Small conference. Utah went to the NCAA finals in a small WAC
conference. UNLV won a National Championship in a small conferece. Butler, St
Marys, Gonzaga, VCU, Old Dominion, BYU, San Diego State, Western Kentucky,
Davidson, Richmond all have made sweet 16 games in the last 3 years. It does not matter what conference you are in Basketball There is a
Please don't get excited about Dave Rose.....Look what Giaco did with Bogut.
It's easy to win 25 games in a weak conference with the Player of the year.
Lets see what Rose does next year. I thought Billy out coached him in the
tournament. Go back and look at tape. Rose was just happy to be there. He
looked like a kid who just go off the plane from his mission....The
Ute's are going to have to take a chance on somebody young & relatively
unknown. I like Tommy Connor myself. I agree with Al Bundy. It's no secret
that Rose was not happy about being thrown under the rug so the football team
could go to the WAC...err I mean pseudo independent. But I don't see him
leaving, and I really don't think he would fit in well at Utah.
Al Bundy "At least we didn't sell our basketball team down the
river for our football team."What basketball team?BYU will be dancing again next year.Where will U be?
From the ESPN blog:"Chow, by any measure one of the best
offensive minds in the history of college football"Yet for some
reason Cougar fans have been saying he's an idiot for 2 decades. Bronco was
right: The amount of criticism matches the level of education. I like the
Cougar fan criticsm of Chow that all he does is run the ball. What? That must
come from some alternate reality that I am not familiar with.
It was a weak move firing Jim Boylen. Should have given him another year or two.
RE: Hawkeye 79It seems like a tough sell because A) there are a number of
open coaching positions and B) the coaching pool isn't that deep. Many are
leveraging inquiries into upping their existing contracts.RE: TJWynn wasn't the right fit for the spread. He should do better in Norm's West
Coast package. The Utes tweaked the spread after Urban Meyer left and it was
never quite the same.
Cougs We might not be having much luck in the coach hunt? At least
we didn't sell our basketball team down the river for our football team. WCC
Regarding the Norm Chow link. I do believe that Norm Chow was one of the best
innovators in College football and that he is a big reason for the BYU success
in the 80's and 90's. I don't think he is in the top tier of OC's anymore. There
are many schools who run the WC offense now. Norm is just another salesman
peddling the same product. Like all the others, he will succeed if he has the
right personnel to run that type of offense. Wynn probably won't be the best
fit. I am betting on another starter by September. I do wish him the best
though and hope Utah is successful in the PAC.
Chris Hill is not panicking, so neither am I. Any word on a third meeting
between Hill and Rose? I think Rose is waiting to see if BYU's offer comes
close to the Utes'.
Contrary to what the article states, the issue isn't that Boylen is a hard act
to follow...the issue is that no one sees any upside in this program in a
supposed "big-time" conference. The grease fire continues...
The big question is why a coach in a so-called "lowly conference"
would turn down the opportunity to coach a school like Utah in a so-called
"power conference."What is causing the coaching position
at Utah to be so tough to sell?
Of interest in breaking basketball news of the last hour, Oklahoma went back to
UNLV coach Kruger for the third time and offered him a 7 year contract for 16
million $$.....and Kruger has taken it. Persistence has paid off for Oklahoma.
UNLV is very interessted in Coach Rice at BYU.
