    Let us face it.
Regardless how good west sports team are, because of the east bias, teams in the west will never be given breaks. NEVER.
West teams must go the extra mile every time.
BYU, SDSU, USU, and UNLV will surprise many. Actually, New Mexico should have been in the mix, but the east would not allow four MWC teams in March Madness. NIT for New Mexico.
BYU basketball is too good for their new conference next year. The Cougs need to be challenged when they play their best basketball. National ratings for BYU next year, forget it. The east will say, "look who BYU plays", end of converation.
Wish ALL west teams well, regardless of conferences.

Playing the run and gun is the wrong strategy when the opposition is doing a better job of it. It's like a company taking a loss on every sale. BYU should have tried to slow it down and change the dynamic of the game...They just tried to force the issue every time down...Just hope they learned and will apply it when they face tough competition in the NCAA tourney ...

Bottom line was Jimmer was extremely tired from scoring 52 the night before against New Mexico. Jimmer didn't look himself most of the game. Either did Emery.

Overall they are playing good basketball. As long as Jimmmer is on the court next Thursday, they have a chance to win.

Never really been a BYU fan but with Jimmer I plan on watching the entire game. He is spectacular.

As has been pointed out, BYU received more exposure this year than ever before. Many more people know about BYU and the LDS Church now than when the season started. Grade for exposure - A

This BYU team is not even close in talent to the Ainge, Craig, Roberts, Kite and Trumbo team of 1981. As GREAT as Fredette has been, this group, in my opinion overachieved. No one other than Fredette will see the NBA. Grade for overachieving - A

Not since the Cosic days has there been a team as entertaining to watch. As someone mentioned earlier, it is a shame that there is not more film of Cosic. I was just a teenager at the time, but he was a blast to watch! He, like Fredette, single-handedly filled the Marriott Center! This team, with Fredette, has been equally entertaining. Entertainment grade - A

BYU will achieve its highest seed ever. Grade A

BYU beat Utah, SDSU, UNLV twice this year. Grade A

BYU has DOMINATED Utah for the past 5 years or more. Grade A

BYU has the most wins in a season EVER - Grade A

Thanks BYU for a WONDERFUL season!

"Didn't San Diego State play 3 games in 3 nights also?"

Yes, that's the advantage of having a deeper bench. Fatigue is a legitimate excuse when you're playing your third game in three nights and all of your starters are playing heavy minutes.

The only thing you're really tired of is BYU still being a legitimately very good team even without Brandon.

With a rested starting five, BYU still has the firepower to beat SDSU.

btw, unless you're clueless or have been living under a rock, his name is

    JIMMER !!!

Not even knowing the correct name of the biggest name in college basketball this season doesn't say much for your basketball IQ.

  • 458italia Draper, UT

    maybe even 8!

  • PAC man Anaheim, CA
    March 13, 2011 12:29 p.m.

    Relax Vince.

BYU isn't going to get anything lower than a 4, but more likely a 3 seed.

USU will probably get an 8/9, but won't get higher than a 7.

BYU is still #5 in RPI, #21 SOS, 9-2 against RPI Top 50
USU is up to #15 in RPI, #121 SOS, 1-2 against RPI Top 50

The selection committee doesn't care how two particular teams might matchup head-to-head, they evaluate the entire resume.

Utah State has a very good team, but BYU's resume is much better than USU's.

BYU lost to #3 RPI SDSU last night, but was within 10 points with just over 5 minutes left in the game.

USU struggled to beat #114 RPI BSU last night, leading by only 5 points with 49 seconds left.

btw, on a neutral court, the Cougars would win 7 of 10 versus the Aggies.

  • 458italia Draper, UT

Actually, I guess it is their (SDSU) fault they are more balanced. What I should have said is that BYU fans shouldn't hold that element against them.

This is a great BYU team of outstanding young men with superb coaches, Dave Rose and Dave Rice. This has been an incredible season, and we have loved every minute of it. Jimmer Fredette has won the hearts of people across the country and the sports media with his commitment, unique style of play, and his humble personality. He is and will be a legend at BYU forever. Congratulations on everything you, as a team, have accomplished in 2010-2011!!!

One losing game does not a team make.

    Go Cougars!

  • 458italia Draper, UT
    March 13, 2011 12:19 p.m.

Come on Cougar fans! SDSU played as many games as BYU has this past week. Arguably the Cougs could have had more energy seeing as they have had more blowout wins than SDSU has had this season. I'm tired of seeing the team fatigue excuse...the only player on BYU who could play that card is Jimmer himself. If he has to score 40+ points every game for the Cougars to win against their tougher opponents, he will inevitably eventually falter. It's not the Aztec's fault their team is more balanced, hence they won the tournament. 2 in a row if I'm not mistaken.

This whole seeding thing is nothing more than a political fiasco! If BYU gets a seed at 5 or lower and USU gets higher than an 8 it will prove out my statement. If these 2 teams were to play 10 games on a neutral court, they would more than likely win 5 each. There is not "any" difference between these 2 schools except politics!

    Dave in Idaho

SDSU was just lucky that they faced a tired Jimmer. Given three days to rest, Jimmer might have set a new career high against the Aztecs.

Hartsock's shooting 2-10, 0-5 from 3pt didn't help. Noah is giving great effort on defense, getting rebounds, blocking shots, but his shooting has been abysmal. If Noah had shot well, BYU would have been right in the game, despite BYU's thin front line without Davies and Collinsworth.

    What's up?

"One "trick ponies" don't always work out so well in a Big Show."

You obviously don't know much about the NCAA tournament, do you?

NCAA tournament history is filled with teams that were carried DEEP into the tournament, even to a championship, on the back of one special player.

    Ever heard of...

    Butler's Gordon Hayward?
    Davidson's Stephen Curry?
    Virginia's Ralph Sampson?
    Indiana State's Larry Bird?
    Princeton's Bill Bradley?
    West Virginia's Jerry West?
    San Francisco's Bill Russell?

With a hot shooting Jimmer, the Cougars are capable of beating any team in the tournament. Whether they can sustain that for 6 games is doubtful; but it certainly wouldn't shock anyone if Jimmer were to carry BYU to two or three wins.

  • TJ Eagle Mountain, UT
    March 13, 2011 10:29 a.m.

The Jealous and Obsessed trollers are out in force I see. I believe Jimmer was responding to some no-class trash talking from kwame after the game. Notice who handled the question about that at the press conference with class. Hint: it wasn't kwame. 30-4 with a 3 seed to the NCAA and the jealous trollers still can't get over themselves. Very sad!!

  • Dave in Idaho Grangeville, Idaho

I think it is amazing that San Diego thinks they stopped Jimmer after he scored 30 points on them. No mention was made of the fact that the rest of the team failed to show up for the game. When Jimmer scores 30 and the rest of the team scores 22, that is a pathetic display for the rest of the team. It is laughable to hear them say they stopped Jimmer (bragging)about it at 30 points. They did stop BYU from winnig but not Jimmer.

"Not everyone who shares a different opinion on BYU is a Univ. of Utah fan, alumni etc. "

It's common knowledge that a large number of opposing "fans" are simply BYU haters. Most of them adopt Utah as BYU's antagonist, but when the Utes don't have much of a team, they're content using any team that happens to play well against the Cougars. This week it will be whichever team BYU plays in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

btw, your "different opinion" is just another way of saying you're a BYU hater.

That's fine. You're welcome to share your "opinion".

    ---------------------

As poorly as BYU shot for the game, the Cougars did fight back and with a 13-2 run, cut a 21-point deficit to 62-52 with 5:02 left in the game. A steal by Collinsworth and a missed short-range jumper by Anderson could have cut SDSU's lead to 8 with 4:07 left.

Last night, the deeper team won, which is typically the case in conference tournaments. I was certainly hoping that the Cougars could pull it off, but I am not surprised by the outcome, given how many minutes BYU's starters had played in the first two rounds.

Those who laugh and mock a 30 win team for one loss in the Championship game against a top 10 team apparently don't have a solid understanding of college basketball. That they feel so relieved when their rival eventually loses a game speaks volumes about both BYU's success and their jealousy.

Time to rest up and then make some noise in the big dance.

Facts: BYU Poor shooting, tired legs but still had a chance with 4:49 left, despite shooting 32%. SDSU lots of energy, deeper bench, poor sportsmanship/taunting - KW clapping in Jimmer's face - Classy. No SDSU players shook BYU hands after game, just coaches.
To be determined: Unless Hedgie was on floor, I don't know how he comes up with Jimmer talking trash. I think it was the other way around as noted by KW clapping in his face.

Seeing Jimmer score 52 points and the Cougars getting a win over UNM was worth it. Playing a tough SDSU a third time and expecting a win after the outstanding game against UNM was tough odds. No doubt the team was a little tired.

Got to hand it to SDSU, they are big and very athletic and they deserved the win. Congratulations to Coach Fisher.

Not an excuse maker however when shots just don't fall that is just plain old fatigue. The Y played their best at NM and were probaly emotionally drained. It has always been difficult to beat a good team three times in a year. NM already found that out. The season is not over yet for BYU. And what about SDSU's chances in the big dance. They are the team that could go a long way and deserve a lot of credit. Maybe not good for y fans but definetely a boost for the MWC. And what about my Aggies. BYU's success overshadowed their great season this year. And they won the WAC tourney. I am predicting a USU first round upset this year and maybe more. One last thought who is the only team to beat SDSU this year? The sky is not falling.

"Even though Jimmer got his points, he missed too many shots."

Brilliant analysis. So in your opinion, who should have been taking the shots?

    Jimmer 10-25 (40%)
    Hartsock 2-10 (20%)
    Abouo 2-5 (40%)
    Emery 4-11 (36%)
    Collinsworth 1-4 (25%)

    Those are your 5 starters.

If you're Coach Rose, who do you want shooting the majority of shots?

BYU didn't lose to SDSU because Jimmer shot too much. BYU lost because the entire team shot poorly, which is more attributable to tired legs than to poor shot selection.

    btw,

When was the last time Utah posted back-to-back 30-win seasons?

hint: Don't bother looking it up, because in Utah's "storied" history, it's never happened!

  • Mormon Ute Kaysville, UT
    March 12, 2011 11:54 p.m.

Even though Jimmer got his points, he missed too many shots. When you shoot around 30%, you're giving the other team too many opportunities for rebounds and SDSU has a way of taking advantage of that. They love to grab those rebounds and run the floor. With Jimmer being weak on defense that gives a huge advantage to teams like SDSU and it showed.

The player is responsible for his actions and he acted in a mature manner by taking ownership and abiding by the consequences knowing the ramifications would be embarrassing and public. Going to miss the BYU. Utah and Wyoming football and basketball rivalries.
Never thought classy universities would place the alminty dollar ahead of 100 year tradidtion.
Sports is a "team" sport. The contistants become a close family. They live together for nine months, eat meals together, attend the same classes, go on double, triple, etc. dates, etc. When one family member is lost, the entire team take a huge hit. HUGE! Rules are rules. Codes are codes. That said, when one team member is lost, who pays the price? Who pays the price? The truth of the matter, the TEAM pays the price. Not the persons committing the violation, but the TEAM. Something to consider.
The San Diego State Aztecs had the best on the floor tonight winning the MWC Tournement because one BYU member missing. Cougs aid the price.
San Diego should receive a high rated seed. BYU will sink very deep.

You must have been reading the honor code while BYU was getting blown out and Leonard trash talking Jimmer. Jimmer did not deserve that. BYU was not thinking through that decision. I'm curious to know what the Y fans think they should be seeded and what the thing the Aggies should be seeded---and vice versa.

As far as what they deserve:
    BYU as a 3
    USU as a 5.

I think BYU's chances of getting a 2 are hurt by the fact that power conferences are getting their best teams in the championship games (Texas, Kansas, Duke, UNC, Kentucky/Florida, Ohio State). Considering SDSU would likely get the nod over BYU, and considering Notre Dame and Pitt from the Big East----3 is a good fit for the Y.

The Aggies biggest problem is their conference and that hey only have wo quality wins OOC (St. Mary's and LBSU). Unfortunately, Boise State is the second best team in the WAC (the same team that lost to the Utes). Considering Georgeown, who clobbered the Aggies, is likely headed for a 7 seed or so, I'd say a 5 is probably not going to happen.

As far as what they'll probably get:
    BYU as a 3.
    USU as a 6 or 7.

Aggie fans and Y fans, I'd love to see your predicions...

Would you have the BYU fans wear suits and ties and simply nod their heads when the team does well?

I sure hope the BYU administration can look Jimmer Fredette in the eyes when they get back to Provo. We all knew what was going to happen after the Brandon Davies botched decision. Leonard trashes Jimmer after the blowout. That should have never happened. I feel for coach Rose. Jimmer had no help. He did it all against NM but no gas left tonight. Thanks again honor code for royally messing up our dream season.

  • Why do we play Las Vegas, Nv
    March 12, 2011 10:15 p.m.

I attended the MTW tourney this weekend and felt a little uneasy about the "jimmermania" . I saw saw signs comparing him to Noah, "let the floods come, we don't need Noah, we have jimmer". I saw a fan walking through the stadium after the new Mexico win with a sign reading "you just got jimmered".I saw groups of fans litererally bowing to him when he scored. This was a big venue for a lot of people to see BYU for the first time as a national power and I think we kind of squandered the oppourtuninity to show the other fans what BYU is all about. Instead the "jimmermaniacs" gave them a look at fanatism and hero worship at it's worst. The In you're face, I'm better than you, you just got jimmered, fans showed a lack of humility and frankly poor sportsmanship. We are about to journey into the national spotlight, let's show the country what BYU stands for. Remember proverbs 16-18. pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. You can all call me a nut, but look inside yourself and ask why do we play?

    @ Duckhunted

Why can't I play the positive influence for the church thing? Cheering for the team is cheering for the church, there is no separating the two. Did you not know that BYU is owned by the LDS church? What is BYU without the church? Think about it.

Sports is fun. One minute you are up and everyone loves or hates you. The minute you are down, everyone piles on you. Posts are meant to be fun. Take hate out of it. BYU is pretty and should get a 4 seed. My Utes are down but will be back on top again. If you get offended easily, don't join the conversation. A few on both sides are immature (Fresno and Duck) and should get off their parents' computers and back to their homework.

    A few thoughts:
SDSU is solid, and it's tough to beat a team 3 times in one season whatever the match-up (see also UNM and TCU earlier in the week).

Any "trash talk"' by Fredette was provoked. He shows respect for his opponents and his interviews are always classy. He doesn't whine...big diffences between him and Ainge.

I've always felt that if BYU lost in the semis or finals, they would finish as a 3 seed. A 3-2 finish (with both loses being blow-outs) and losing Davies is enough to prevent them being a 2. A 4 seed though, Chris? That's a stretch.

Veritas, I am a Ute fan and not embarrased by Ute football. If anything, BYU's current basketball season is starting to mirror Utah's FB: late season blow-out loses after a high ranking. The Y still has time to stop the bleeding and prove me wrong. However, having been ranked as high as 3, I believe anything short of the elite-8 would be suboptimal.

Seeding? Utah went to the championship as a 3 and lost the next year in round 2 as a 2.

  • ideasnstuff Orem, UT
    March 12, 2011 9:49 p.m.

Since I'm walking down memory lane about Ainge, another interesting tidbit. Ainge was the equivalent of POY that year (John Wooden award), but was not drafted until the middle of the second round (partly perhaps because he still had baseball ambitions). He didn't go on to be a superstar, but a starter on a championship team. I even think he made the All-Star team once or twice.

I'm sure Jimmer's jersey will be the third one up in the rafters before too long, but Ainge was also a truly amazing college player. He was the leader and coach on the floor from the time he first stepped on the court as a freshman. He wasn't usually flashy to watch, just a great shooter, very efficient, and terrific basketball intellegence.

As for the other jersey up there, Kresimir Cosic, he ranked right up there with Jimmer in terms of entertainment value. It's a pity there isn't more footage of him playing for BYU. I can't find BYU stuff on YouTube, but I'll never forget him (and I was a U student and fan at the time)!

Correction, they're my Cougars, not Cougards (bleary eyes an fumble fingers). Also, I think their goal should be to win every game through to the National Championship. A good and reasonable expectation from the fans would be to see them get to the round of 16 (2 wins).

    March 12, 2011 9:26 p.m.

A reminder about the difference between the Ainge team in 1981 and the Fredette team in 2011. Ainge had two teammates who would go on to solid journeyman careers in the NBA (Greg Kite and Fred Roberts) and another who could have stuck somewhere in the NBA but instead became a legend in the Spanish league (Steve Trumbo). Jimmer just doesn't have that kind of supporting cast (Emery could probably do well in a Euro league, like Jaycee Carroll). It's amazing that Jimmer has carried the team as he has with mainly a group of role players. As much as I love my Cougards, this is not an Elite 8 kind of team. I think at the beginning of the season we all would have said we'd be thrilled to see them win a couple of games in the touranment. I think that's a great goal this year.

4-1 against SDSU for the past two years? How embarassing is that really for the cougs? BYU is the only team to beat SDSU all season.

What a great year this has been! BYU has had more ESPN exposure than ever before, Jimmer Fredette will be the national POY, we beat SDSU twice to secure a piece of our last MWC regular season title. The big dance awaits with a 4 seed at worst.

But most importantly, BYU basketball has generated much positive exposure for the church, and after all that is what the mission of BYU athletics is all about.

Great job Dave Rose and team! Way to represent our faith with flying colors!

Well SDSU finally got one I guess, that so-called great atheletic team has beaten BYU once in the last 5 times they have played and they did it without Brandon Davies in the line up. The absence of Davies was felt tonight, BYU had very little inside game on offense and gave up way too many offensive rebounds. Poor shooting from the outside hurt as well of course and SDSU did play a great game tonight. All well time to move on to the big Dance, its great to be once again headed to the NCAA tournament.

I bet you jealous yewt fans wish you knew what it felt like to still be playing but hey you can always tune in and watch real basketball teams in the state of utah play since BYU and USU will both be in. Dudes. Haters will hate. Ignore them, I will never understand how fans of teams like the Raiders, Utes, and Dodgers can be so emotionally invested in other teams losing, more so that their own team winning.

BYU lost because SDSU wanted it more by forcing turnovers and leveraging their inside game, without taking too many junk three pointers like they did the last few times. BYU actually had good shots, they just didn't fall down. This game was fairly officiated unlike other games for BYU.

I think BYU is a scrappy team and if they play with emotion, they will be hard to beat in the tournament. They have had a lot of adversity and pressure, most teams have come at them with full effort and nothing to lose. They deserve a 3 or 4 seed, should get to the sweet sixteen, and will then get to the final four if they have good match ups or hot shooting.

No doubt all the partisans in Salt Lake are delighted that the Cougars lost. But, don't forget, it's pretty difficult to beat the same team three times in a season. Just ask New Mexico about that. And while you're boasting, how did the mighty Utes do against SDSU....didn't they have a whopping 15 points in the first half? If I had a coach like you had, with such great success, I don't know what I'd do....except maybe fire him. Get used to not going past the first round of the conference tournament when you play in the PAC12. The only reason they invited Colorado and Utah is they wanted two guaranteed wins in basketball and football every season. Again, what seed is Utah projected to get in March Madness? Remind me, please, because they're not on my radar. And they don't need to worry about even playing 2 tourament games in 2 days, let alone 3, because they were 1/2 of 1 and done. Sorry, it's TRUE.

My thanks to Coach Rose, his staff, and the entire BYU basketball team for a great season! Thirty wins and a co-conference championship, with a high ranking RPI and SOS to go along with it. Congrats to the Aztecs! They were just too good today. Now it's on to the NCAA tournament. I hope the MWC makes a good showing. Good luck to UNLV and SDSU. Go Cougars!!!

Hey folks, nothing to hang your heads about. You beat them 2 out of 3 times and you beat NM! Not half bad and wasn't it great to watch Jimmer play all season? He is a special man and player and we get to see the Cougars in the big dance going in 30 and 4! Like I said, not bad by a long shot!

@fresnogirl, that top 10 is gone after tonight. I would guess that the Y will still end up with a 6-8 seed.

Enjoy Yewtes. You couldn't do it yourselves so enjoy the effort of others.
All hating aside, SDSU played great tonight and earned the win. Collinsworth was a liability out there and no one else stepped up for the Cougars. Oh well, better to finish 2nd in the tournament than be a hateful yewte fan!
