Why should Fredette feel frustrated because the officials looked the other way while he was getting mugged?

Boylen's goal seemed to be to forget about winning the game. Just beat up Jimmer, keep him from scoring, keep it a slow game, and not look too embarrassed.

Is that what the U fans want in a coach? Slow the game down, so we don't get too embarrassed. You should be embarrassed to call your team the "running Utes". Perhaps the "walking it up slowly, and taking our time so we keep the game nice & boring Utes".

Smack from tun is the only thing they can do. It's certainly not winning games. Maybe the utes can put an asterisk in the loss column: *Moral victory.

Well utah made it interesting for about 3/4 of the game. BYU though seemed to be their worst enemy in the first half, I lost track of how many easy open layups or shots they just flat out missed. Abouo really stepped it up and played well, he was the only one on his game in the first half. Hartsock and Davies were scoreless at half and Fredette was just 3/9 shooting. I believe Abouo had 6 of byu's 12 made fgs in the first half. Emery and Fredette stepped up in the second half, Emery had 13 points and several steals after halftime and Fredette took over the last 9 minutes of the game scoring 15 points in that span. Nice to see the seniors step it up when they needed to the most in this one. Also good to see another role player (Abouo) step up and have a big game in the first half when everyone else seem to be struggling to find their shot. Always nice to get another win and sweep your rival, great win Cougars!

Two programs headed in the same direction, hedgehog.

The Utah football team reached it's apex in mid-October, then headed in the same direction as the Ute's basketball team.

The three humiliating losses and three lucky wins to end the season are just the prelude to the football program descending to the same depths as the basketball program.

Be patient Utah fans. Give Boylen some time. Some of you don't like that thought but he will be fine. You have a player out that is excellent and a couple of others have stepped up lately. I think you have 3 pretty good players for next year. You will probably be middle of the pack at about 6 or 7th. It depends how your bigs, who have fairly good potential, turn out. Boylen will be fine and you will be pleased in about 2.5 to 3 years. I have watched as many games of Utah as your best fans have. I know what I am looking at. Be Patient.

This game was about three things.

    1) The mathematical side of sports. All staistics tend toward the middle. Utah played terribly and BYU brilliantly during the week. Both tended toward the middle. BYU's middle is better than Utah's.

    2) Ute desperation. Even with a very good football team, the Utes are being dominated by BYU again this year. A win yesterday could have defined a season. As it happened, it just made the rest of the season perfectly understandable.

    3) This was a monster trap game. The Utes tried to spring the trap but found that their system is their trap.

I agree, jimer creates a lot of offensive fouls that never seem to get called.

As far as I can tell the kid has only on trick ... the open shot.

  • PerfectCougar Payson, UTAH
    Feb. 13, 2011 5:09 p.m.

A foul is not called based on who draws the contact. If the defensive player is in the air or moving sideways when the contact occurs, it is a blocking foul. PERIOD.

Who creates the contact is irrelevent.

  • wwookie Payson, UT
    Feb. 13, 2011 4:27 p.m.

This game, Jimmer was a lot more like Danny Ainge throwing up horrible shots and showing the lack of intelligence that will haunt him as he transitions to the NBA.

Stats are stats, and if Jimmer is off, and can't really create shots, he should stop trying to draw the foul (Most of the so-called no calls could have easily been interpreted to be offensive fouls as Jimmer usually forces the contact)

BYU would have blown out Utah if Jimmer had not played at all. He was a handicap in this game by playing poorly for most of the game. His late burst didn't make up for the earlier poor play.

Quick observations: (1) Fredette is being mugged and of course the referee's are not calling it - punishment for BYU leaving the league. It's OK for Utah and TCU to leave for more money, but for BYU to do it, is unforgivable. (2) If I were a Ute fan, I wouldn't go to those incredibly boring games either. Thanks to Dave Rose for not playing that stupid Majerus/Reid/Boylan slowdown game. (3) Where has Hartsock gone? (4) The loss of C. Collinsworth is going to be felt at SDS, in the MWC tournament and in the NCAA tournament - few are telling that story. (5) I think Jimmer has been better than advertised given that he is so "marked" every darn game. He's a warrior.

  • PerfectCougar Payson, UTAH
    Feb. 13, 2011 3:13 p.m.

BYU must come up with a way to take much better advantage of the way team's are defending Jimmer and the three point line.

  • PerfectCougar Payson, UTAH
    Feb. 13, 2011 3:12 p.m.

O'Brien was big in this game. He was very effective in guarding Jimmer in the first half and he was very good on offense driving to the bucket.

I think UTAH made a mistake in not using him more often on offense. He would have scored more for them and he would have created foul trouble for Davies and Hartsock.

  • PerfectCougar Payson, UTAH
    Feb. 13, 2011 2:28 p.m.

    The game plan was sound.
    1. Keep Jimmer down as much as possible. - done pretty well until the last few minutes; beat up Jimmer phsyiscally as much as the refs will allow, which was a lot (actually it was offensive and should be talked about at league HQ).
    2. Guard the three point line and limit three point shots. BYU averages 11 made threes at home. This was very well done. BYU usually shoots 20 or more three point shots. This game they shot only 12 times making only 4. Emery only made two attempts. Good job.
    3. Force the dribble drive into the lane where the seven-footers will intimidate them. This was very well done. Davies tried early with no success and then dished the ball out each time, in spite of great passes to him that left him in good position to score - except for the big men in his way.

If I was a Utah fan I would be mad about this game. Down by 10 points with 2 minutes left Watkins brings the ball up and then dribbles at the top of the key for 20 seconds.

As far as the game. Utah did a good job of not doubling Jimmer. They kept a bigger player on him the entire time.

The reason BYU won was Utah turnovers.

    Feb. 13, 2011 12:25 p.m.

Lost at home to SDSU by 9 and to BYU by 25.
Lost on the road to SDSU by 32 and to BYU by 13.

The Utes have some talent and this was probably his best effort ever a formulating a game plan.

But, bottom line, even with double- and triple-teaming Jimmer, with two or three lines of defense behind the initial defenders,

you held Jimmer to 4 points under his national best per game scoring average and still lost the game.

If that's progress, I guess you'd call it baby steps.

    Still, BYU assist/turnover ratio - 17/10; Utah - 7/17

Jimmer, despite the massive effort to shut him down, still had almost as many assists(5) as the entire Utah team(7). And, he was still the leading scorer.

As stated previously, Utah has some talent, but I don't see it being utilized very effectively.

I love how Boylen measures his success on how many points his team allowed Jimmer to get...

"I think we made him work for his stuff..I..uh..ya know..I....if you compare game 1 to game 2, I'm not a mathematician, but it sure looks better doesn't it?" -Jim Boylen

haha...its all about "progress" isn't it Jim? You and your boys are well on your way to making some noise in the Conference Tourney. You held Jimmer to 23! Good thing that whole "losing the game" non-sense doesn't matter.

And losing 12 of your last 15 doesn't matter either. Out of those 12 losses, I would bet at least 8-9 are moral victories for the utes. Keep it up, Coach. You're doin' fine.

The question is: Will Utah's administration let Hill fire Boylen if they have to honor the rest of his contract? It could go one way or the other. With the current U. President heading off to the Huskies I doubt if Washington would want to see Boylen go... so it could politically be doubtful that there will be a move in that direction while the current Pres. is still at the U's helm. 5 Years of restrictions on earnings in the PAC could also be a hurdling block in these economic times. It's going to be interesting to watch and see.

What the heck is 50's style B-ball?

If John Wooden could be cloned & came back as a coach [yeah I know that he did not coach UCLA in the 50's]; he would say - to win the game your team must put the ball through the hoop more times than the other team.
It doesnt matter what day or time period you play/played in just get 1 more point than the other team and you win.

I will say that there were times that Jimmer got fouled and they were not called.

Funny how all these ute haters posing as cougar fans who were going off earlier about a blow out win. Again and again the same haters proove how incorrect, unknowledgeable and pathetic they are.

Good luck to the cougs and hope you all get a #1 or 2 seed in the NCAA tourney. You could make it to the elite 8 this year with the second best player in college basketball on your team.

If WJCoug you meant that rarely do ALL 8 of the top seeds make it to the elite 8, that would be correct, but my stats would show that the majority do---leaving the overrated teams out. Personally I think it would be great to seem them get there. No reason for you to start hedging your bets---unless you think they are...ahem...overrated.

  • MiP Iowa City, IA
    Feb. 13, 2011 8:25 a.m.

    1) worf, Chris_B is NOT Chris B. He's a BYU troll.

    2) WJCoug, I didn't say BYU's season would be a failure if they lost before the Elite 8. What I said is that haters would say that they were overrated should they not prove to be as good as their current #7 ranking.

AND---you have proven that once again that Coug fans will often use OPINION on these boards to pass as FACTS. (Happens on the Ute and Aggie side too, don't worry).

But here is what you said: "Rarely do the best 8 teams in the country make it to the elite 8 - if ever."

2010: 4 of the eight teams were 1 or 2 seeds, one was a three seed.
2009: 6 teams were 1 or 2 seeds, and the other 2 teams were 3 seeds.
    2008: 5 teams were 1 or 2 seeds, and another 2 were 3 seeds.
2007: 7 teams were 1 or 2 seeds an the last was a 3 seed.

In other words, the best teams (1-3 seeds) make it to the elite eight, with a few of the overrated teams bowing out earlier.

re: Chris B:I can't believe that's you...I hope you were sincere.

To the rest of utedom...It's OK to congratulate BYU. You've spouted off all year. You said first you could guard Jimmer one on one, he was slow. He torched you for 47 points. Then you said he was all BYU had so you threw three lines of Henderson rock-n-sock'em defense on him...and you discovered that BYU ACTUALLY has other players that can torch you. You even had the refs letting you get away with some of the ugliest, thug defense I've seen all year...all you still couldn't win, oh, and Fredette lead all scorers.

C'mon, when are you going to stop your childish whining and just say Go Cougs.

  • jakartafan Houston, TX
    Feb. 13, 2011 8:02 a.m.

It seems as if the MWC officials are bending over backwards to show that they are not giving Jimmer "superstar" treatment, but what is happening is that they are going overboard the other way. Defenders can push, slap, bump and hack Jimmer and get away with it when a foul would be called if another player was involved. Jimmer doesn't want special treatment, but I think he would love it if he was treated the same as any other player. If Jimmer was in the Pac 10 he would be shooting twice as many free throws because the Pac 10 officials don't feel like they need to penalize a player for being good. Personally, I am impressed with the way Jimmer is able to just keep playing in spite of all the no-calls.

  • UU32 Bountiful, UT
    Feb. 13, 2011 8:02 a.m.

JJ O'Brien did a good job on Jimmer, with lots of help from Foster in the lane. When Clyburn or Glover guarded Jimmer they were not nearly as effective. Also interesting that when Jiggy went out with his 4th foul that Jimmer was able to settle in a bit as he didn't have to work as hard on the defensive end.

In the end, BYU is just better. Very well coached. Emery doesn't get near enough credit. He won that game yesterday no question.

Watch for an announcement on Boylen coming up here soon. He has worn out his welcome. Taking a "moral victory" in a 13 point loss to you BYU just shows that he doesn't understand Utah basketball's legacy nor does he understand the fan base. I will say that yesterday was his best game planning that I have seen since he has been here. But that doesn't mean anything if you lose. It was a 13 point loss -- it is not like Abouo hit a three at the buzzer for the win. It was a 13 point loss. Dr. Hill - time to move on. Donny Daniels awaits.

Anybody out there sitting close enough to the floor to catch what the official had to say. This seems very unusual. I know there were two absolute take downs late in the game. Maybe the Utes were getting a little too physical. Rather than talk to the Utes or call the fouls the solution was to get Jimmer out of the game. This is pathetic. The bottom line is you never know what a team is capable of when they have been beaten like a drum 9 out of 10 times.

Unusual to have a Referee recommending to a coach to pull a player of Fredette's caliber out of a game... especially after he had just made almost two thirds of his total 23 points in less than 5 minutes. Call it what you want...but Reed couldn't have made that suggestion to Rose at a better time. The game for all intense and purposes, was all but over. Utah had been successful in shutting Fredette down in the first half only to realize they had to ease back off Fredette in order to contain Abouo and Jackson Emery. Fredette is that good. You have to Double and Triple to even slow him down...but then risk the other cougars picking up the slack.
Reed's suggestion was timely. Fredette is already the winningest player in BYU and MWC history. He's about to also become BYU's all time points leader as well. Now he'll have that opportunity to do that against San Diego State on the road. And let's face it. Jimmer does have a better overall game when he's on the road. But some of his best moments are at home.

  • DC Alexandria, VA
    Feb. 13, 2011 6:56 a.m.

This was one of BYU's worst games because of the Utes, not on spite of them. Boylen has his team prepared and did a great job for most of the game. What I like about this BYU team is that they fought the entire game, through bad shots and tough defenses, and others stepped up to fill the void Jimmer left in the first half (Abouo is a stud). Jimmer did his job late in the 2nd and that was the difference.
Even in tough games this year BYU seems to be pulling away in the end to make it look like it wasn't close. BYU can score very quickly - something that I believe some tournament teams won't be ready for.
Utes have good players, they just need a coach to match.

Who are these people supporting Boylen? Have they been watching the same team lose all season? Remember, this is the team that lost to San Diego [not San Diego State - but them too], lost to Portland, lost to Air Force at HOME, lost to their bitter rival by about a hundred at HOME, and now the team that lost to their rival again. There is a common thread there - LOSER. Boylen has to go - Utah will get killed next year in the PAC-12 without a change. Let me help Jim with some excuses - let's see - we're young, we have an injury, we were on the road, the ball didn't go in the hoop, we can't shoot simple free throws, we have more turnovers than anyone in the nation, we have seven footers that can't rebound, I had a hang nail, and on and on. The wrong coaches in Utah are resigning - Jerry resigns and Jim stays. Sad. Where's Coach Bugs Bunny when you need him?

I wonder why Jimmer was frustrated toward the end of the game. Could it be that he was fouled hard three times in a row, and the referee pretended not to look?

At least the ref had a solution. And it was brilliant.

Ask the coach to bench Jimmer.

I wondered what Rose was telling Jimmer after the game. I think it was something along the lines of, "Don't say anything about the officials. Not even, 'The Utes played me very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very physical toward the end of the game.' Just go shower and head home and say nothing. I'll handle the post-game interviews. This BYU team has been one of the best AND most entertaining teams to ever come out of the state of Utah - and I will enjoy them till the very end. Once this year is over, given the track record of Coach Rose, I will then look forward to yet another very successful campaign next year.

ClarkHippo-The same could have been said about BYU fans during football season. Many echoing how overated the Utes were when they rose to #5---hoping and praying they would fall to TCU, ND, and Boise State. My guess is you were one of them.

If BYU doesn't make it to the Elite 8, then yes, they will have been overrated. I'm not saying that they are---just stating that when you are doing well---haters from the other side would like to see their rival fall---and it goes both ways.

For me, I hope the Cougars represent in the tourney---but if they don't then it still would have been a remarkable season for Fredette.

Thought the Utes played tough, but I don't think it was their best. Nor do I think it was BYU's worst. BYU is 13 points better than the U.

BYU has a good team. They may get a loss between now and tournament time. The world won't stop. They may even lose the tournament at some point, maybe early, maybe late. At the same time, someone has to win it, so let's pull for a team from utah, eh...

I don't see that dominating fire yet in Fredette or his teammates. Only one BYU team has made it to the elite 8 - EVER.

Abouo is stepping up and he will be needed in the tournaments. Some teams will be able to stop Jimmer and having another option besides Davies and Emery is very helpful.

Okay, sorry. That was supposed to say "you got Abouo'ed" just doesn't cut it.

Tough, tough game. Utah came to make a contest of it and it was probably their best game of the year. It was one of BYU's worst games of the year however with Davies, Hartsock and Fredette missing some of the simplest layup, put backs and uncontested jumpers. Abouo was fantastic and Jackson Emery was all over Utah with steals and breakaways. I don't think you can say Utah got Jimmered (23 points) and you go Abouo'ed just doesn't cut it. Maybe Utah can just ask "Y?"
