A few idiots can't control themselves, so we all become criminals needing to be monitored. Utah Government has much more to worry about and a whole than a few people who can't hold their pills. Put the robbers in jail, and provide assistance to those whining they are hooked, but of course it is a whole lot less expensive to simply act like we are fixing the problem, than really doing anything. These bills are the usual governmental dog and pony show...nothing more.

So, how exactly...

will this bill stop people from robbing pharmacies to get their drugs? That seems to be a main point of the article.

Sounds to me like it just another way for our Big Brother that we call government to baby-sit us.

Doesn't this state have enough problems? I know, let's waste time and energy tracking something that is already totally tracked by the FDA! I know, let's make sure to keep even law abiding citizens who are in pain from commiting sin.

Mildred

Let's take back our nation. Get BIG BROTHER government (and religion) out of our lives!

Wow

Commenters at 1:24, 1:27 and 1:35 really just don't get it. I'll say this slowly - prescription drug abuse causes more deaths and emergency room visits nation-wide than all other illicit drugs COMBINED!! Prescription drug abuse is simply a HUGE problem in this state and country. We DO need to spend money when there is a serious problem. And this is a serious problem if there ever was.

At the federal level the problem of online pharmacies is being addressed through legislation. Maybe with combined state and federal laws this problem will finally be addressed with the seriousness it deserves.

Great job Mr. Daw!!!!!

What about the "War on Drugs"? Are they not supposed to be taking care of things like this? Just because they make a law, that doesn't mean the problem will go away.

LEGIT USE?

I don't support drug abuse, but there are cases where, painkillers for instance, an Rx is appropriate & sometimes from multiple doctors.

Recently I know of a case where a suddent back problem came up with severe pain. A trip to the emergency room was made and an Rx for a painkiller was given by the ER doctor. At the drug store, when the insurance company was contacted they said they would have to have the cooncurrence of the primary care doctor. It was a holiday weekend and he was out of town. Therefore you could STILL GET the drug but only if you paid full price.

The Rx was legitimate, the pain was real, and given by a real doctor. The solution, return to the ER.

Is the new law going to eliminate problems like this or is it going to cause nore like them?

This would be yet another layer of government intrusion into the lives of everyone who lives with pain everyday, many who are dependent on their meds in order to maintain a functional and productive life.

Those who are free from debilitating pain don't have the vantage point to determine whether meds are necessary to those who do.

Those free of pain should leave the general public alone and go after the bad guys without acting like you are morally superior.

hypocrites...

It's OK to take an extremely powerful and addictive opium based narcotic your Doctor gives you.

But heaven help you if you drink a Coke, Dr. Pepper, or Mt. Dew.

You and your entire family will be shunned from everything!!!

Whenever I hear "I am from the government and I am here to help you" I get worried. I think most government agencies could be closed and no one would miss them. They are the masters of unintended consequences.

Mewho

hypocrites - What are you talking about? No one cares if you drink a Coke!!! Get real.

@Mewho

Really? You must live outside Utah County.

Short on substance

The article unfortunately doesn't enlighten us to anything in the bill. Also don't understand how such a bill would curb robberies so why even mention it? So will make the effort to find the bill, read it, then forward opinion to appropriate representative. Would suggest everyone do the same...ultimately complaining on a blog doesn't do a thing. Read then contact your ELECTED official.

Actually...

these bills are an attempt to help those who have an abuse problem get some needed help from their physicians. By reporting back to the docs when one of their patients overdoses or is picked up for DUI because of a drug the doctor may have prescribed, the doctor can initiate an intervention to address the problem before more damage or injury is caused by the addicted patient.

If the doctor does not know that the patient has an addiction problem, the doctor may blithly continue prescribing and enabling the addiction to the detriment of both the patient and those around the patient.

By the way, I know that there are many patients with chronic pain who are not addicts but rely on lots of strong medicine to get through the day. These bills will help the doctors discern between these legitimate patients and the doctor shopper addicts. Right now, they often have no idea.

Monitors

Why not put camera's in all the bars in Utah and report everyone who buys a drink as well...!!!
Stupid!!!
