help them learn English!!

another reason for them not to learn english!

Voice

"They are under-represented. They have no voice."
Yes they do have a voice, and as Americans it should speak ENGLISH!

cb

This is a very bad idea. What incentive do they have to lean English.

Paul

I suppose this means we'll be seeing more editorials about how illegals should be left alone and we should continue to support them with our tax dollars.

I wonder if there will be a 'Show Story in English' button?

Kit

Are you joking me. You think because they can now read the newspaper they won't have the desire to learn Engish. I'm sure every Latino in Utah is sitting there with their dictionaries right now trying to translate the D-news so they can learn English.
No, this will help them to stay current and help educate them which in turn will help them have the desire to learn English. I'm sure English classes will be adverstised in this newspaper.

What are you scared of?

What's it to you that several people will have the opportunity for a quality newspaper in their native language? Just because someone reads the news in Spanish, it does not mean they do not speak English.

What are all of you really afraid of? I seems to me there is a lot of hyperbole on these boards about Hispanics, and many of you don't even bother to distinguish to whom your racist comments apply (ie. legal vs. illegal). Even those who claim that they are only concerned with illegal immigration seethe with racist anger.

Perhaps you all need to look inside yourselves and figure out what inadequacy you are trying to cover up by being so vocal about something so innocuous as a newspaper launch.

truth

My family were immigrants, but they were hard workers, and did not get pandered to like this hispanic population is. Why should things be any different for these immigrants then it was for mine?

denied

No, it will help them stay in their Spanish comfort zone!, why learn English when you can get Spanish newspapers?

hello

It is not innocuous!, and it is not accurate for you to describe what are legitimate concerns as raciscm and dismiss it as such. If you want a newspaper in Spanish fine, import them from Spain or Mexico. Having a Spanish newspaper means that we are adhering to the immigrants as opposed to them adhering to the requirments of living in this country, and that is dangerous.

Bilingual..Knowing EnglishFirst

Right on the point Good For Them!
I know alot of people that speak read&write..

Living in America they should speak more
ENGLISH First!
(other than thier own second Language)

English is Numero Uno...

As well as thier second Language is down to earth..

Wisdom

If you're here in America to earn money it should be a law that you MUST prove you can EFFECTIVELY speak English.

No English, no money to you.

A Spanish paper will no doubt wipe out a large amount of motivation for foreigners to learn English.

Fools will whine and say that is stupid or unkind but language binds, or divides, any group of people at any level.

Are we the UNITED States of America or not?

Armando

I'm originally from Mexico and I applaud the face we'll have a newspaper written in our native language. If you Americans were to live in Mexico and also spoke Spanish, wouldn't you like to read a paper in English? Many Mexicans know how to speak English. I'm surprised how many Americans don't know how to speak Spanish!

Your kids taking Spanish will have another resource to use.

Darrel

Hate it to break it to you guys...but there is no official language in this country. They have as much right to dictate you speak Spanish as we do for them to speak English.

That being said, Utah does have an official language, but at the time of its passing, no one was certain what that would mean legally.

speak&readGood for them!!!

Remember to speak more English =Numero UNO=

Re: Armando

I did find it convenient in Europe or South America to have an English newspaper, so I could keep up on events. But, it was World events that I was tracking. A second-language newspaper is simply a crutch. If you are visiting for a short time, there is no reason to learn the local language. But, if you are planning to stay long enough that local events matter, then it is time to learn the local language.

No voice?

Uhhh, there's already at least half a dozen Spanish-language print newspapers/magazines along the Wasatch Front ....

re

What are you scared of?
Our country being ruined by people who have a different culture and differnt values than.
coruption, gangs...etc.
Would you rather live in San Diego or Tijuana?
Try watching the news ... you'll find out that about 1/2 of all the violent crime that takes place here is cause by illegal hispanics.
If legal hispanics are getting lumped in with the illegals it's because for the most part they help aid and abed the illegals instead of standing up for the law and their country.

English to Bilingual..thank you~

So what
And its thier choice But
They need also to Speak English
to Understand more..
