Utah State= Residential school

Very interesting article. I'm a recent graduate of Utah State University and in my 3 and a half years I spent in Logan I must say this: our fans are second to none. I've never seen such dedication in my life. I had the chance to attend the WAC basketball tournament in Reno last year. The championship game was against Nevada and I was stunned to see that we had more students in attendance than Nevada's students section (we were at Nevada's home court!!!). I would have to say that Utah State's location certainly helps. Utah State is a residential school meaning the students live right near the campus (or on the campus itself). We live in a small town that doesn't offer a lot of entertainment. Because we don't have much, we create the entertainment ourselves. I love how creative we are. We are unique. We don't get together and go clubbin' with our friends like many students do at other schools. We find unique ways to have fun and that certainly helps make Utah State basketball what it is.

Enough

already. This is the third article about the lack os support for U basketball. You know, pounding and nagging people is not going to get them to come. Get their coach to class up his act. That might help.

Wanda Pace

I think for one thing that the attendence has declined is due to the coverage of the sport. I had to go to the U of U page to find out when and where they were playing. We live out of town or we would of bought tickets as we did every year we were there.

Really D-News?

Do you really expect anyone to read through a 12 page online article...?

When Ricks had a team when I was a student there and also lived there I went religiosly to all the home games when I was in town.

There was a mission farewell some people thought I should go to but I didn't want to leave town to go to that. I think the only home games I missed were when I left town. Scheduled dates around them if I didn't bring a date to the games. Went to morp on wrong day if it conflicted with game. Took girls on girls ask day.

Football same way I did work saturdays and hated working saturdays for that reason not being able to go to the afternoon football games. When I lived in Rexburg. Went to all home football games as well. As student those were events I did not miss. Never missed them when I was in town.

Aggies

Have great attendance because there is nothing else to do in Logan except tip cows and eat cheese.Plus the Aggies have a good team .

I'll tell you why I don't go to college basketball games: 1) I abhor looking at bodies lathered in tattoos--I won't pay money to see that. Honestly, that leaves only about BYU as I team I would even consider going to
2) I hate crowds, traffic, and late night games, getting home at 11 or 12 from a game.
3) If a game is on television, I definitely will not go to the game.
4) Cost. Although I can afford to go to the games, a lot of people can't. People are unemployed, underemployed, or can't justify the expense.
5) I have a lot of better things to do (and I love basketball), but with colleges playing 30-40 games, and the Jazz playing 82 games, I'd spend all my time at games. They need to cut these way back.

Boylen: Recruit Utah players

Boylen, You need to start recruiting Utah kids if you want attendance to go up. You big time coaches and players in the area which you have no right to do. You're no Majerus!
Treat people right and recruit Utah players like Utah State and BYU do. They get it done year in and year out.

WeberFan

Weber should be getting 9k a game with the talent they have. Lets boycot the Jazz and support athletes who arent in it for the money.

Empty Seats...

The picture showing all those empty red seats, is because the UTES STINK!!! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out...especially when you lose to the likes of Houston Baptist, Idaho, Illinois State, and Slippery Rock U...Why would anyone waste their time and money to watch that??? Win, you put butts in the seats, lose and you have empty seats!!! And, when you can watch most if not all of the game on the Mountain Network in these economically challenging times, why would you go? Unless you are a BYU Cougar fan and have a 20-1 reason to go!

Aggies

Anyone who really wants to enjoy the experience of seeing a basketball game should get up to Logan. If you're not an Aggie fan you'll have one of the best spectator experiences of your life.

Idaho Aggie

I could have summed this article up after reading one page...Utah State's fan base is the most loyal in the state (no contest) and is one of the best in the entire nation. It seems BYU has had good support this year, but they have a real good team. If they had lost a few more games this season, it would be the same old snooze fest at the Marriot Center. If USU had an arena that size, we would rival the craziness of Energy Solutions Arena (a.k.a. the Delta Center) during a playoff game every night. As for the Utes up on the hill...their whole basketball program is just blah right now. Seriously a basketball program with their history, tradition, and success is worthy of faithful support, but they get very little. It's pathetic seeing all the empty seats at U of U home basketball games. Ute fans need to come up to Logan a few times to learn how to support your b-ball team. GO AGGIES!!

U of U alum

It has to start with the students. And the fact is that the U of U has the MOST apathetic student section in the conference, and probably the nation. You can talk about the Muss all you want, but at best you have 500 students showing up at games ( and that includes the band and cheerleaders ). Just stating the facts.

weber

weber's 1980 attendance was actually 10,500 for 16 home games not 9,800. but the point is still the same.

Where are the fans?

They are watching the game on cable TV or the internet. There were large crowds in the early '80s because there was nothing else to do or any other way to see the game, especially for college students.
I don't go to games because of the traffic, cost and obnoxious fans from both sides. I would much rather stay at home and watch it there.

Yewties

Love how the Yewties made the front page of teh papes!!!!!!

Henry Drummond

I haven't been to a college basketball game in 15 years. I don't even watch it on television anymore. I do go to all the Jazz home games however. There's only so much time and money I'm willing to spend on sports. What's left tends to go College Football and the occasional Baseball game.

As far as students are concerned, that has changed too. I'm a college professor and most students today are working full time while getting their degree. Students who aren't working at least 30 hours in addition to school are a rarity compared to 25 years ago.

I suspect the lackluster attendance will continue.

reality

I know local Ute faithful and media don't like it, but BYU has clearly dominated the big sports (football and basketball) in recent years. BYU is on track to win its 4th straight MWC title and have beaten the Utes 3 of the last 4 in football. Utah did better than BYU prior to that in some prior years and will again--that's college sports, but the reluctance of local media to "tell it like it is" is an insult to readers and fans. Both newspapers and the little local sports talk guys are merely homer cheerleaders for the Utes and, frankly, that gets boring in a hurry. The Utes will do better again, but the coaxing and begging of fans to go to games is just silly. The product is bad for a 50/50 Ute basketball program and a 3rd place football program. When they get better, people will show. Focus on reality homers.

fans

simple...utah fans are fickle. 10 years ago utah was good in hoops and their fans were all about hoops. at the same time no one went to utah football games. now it's flipped. utah fans are a joke.

Re Reality

What do you mean by "3rd place football team" Ok so the Utes were down a bit this year. When BYU goes undefeated (AS IF THAT WILL EVER HAPPEN AGAIN) and beats a top SEC team in a major bowl we can talk . Until then I'll be happy with my "horrible" 3rd place team
