Someone a lot smarter than me said (and I won't put this in quotes since I'm paraphrasing): The world wants to take people out of the slums by changing their environment, but the Master would have us teach people in the slums correct principles so they can change their lives and have the power within themselves to change their own environment.
In my personal experience the above statement is just about right and this study seems to confirm both my personal experience and the quote above. I still give freely to charity, but I know the source of real change.
Religion linked to higher paychecks?
Just don't tell that to any liberal athiests.
They still think we're all a bunch of morons for believing in God.
Those who believe in God earn more money than those who don't?
No surprise to me at all.
Those who believe in God believe that we need to take orders from a higher power so they don't fight authority (bosses) as much.
Those who belive in God know they're going to be held accountable for how they live their life which leads into acceptance of personal responsibility. Bosses love employees who are responsible.
Those who believe in God believe that they were created for a purpose and therefore they strive harder to use their talents, to develop, to grow which leads to goalsetting and organizational skills. Bosses love employees who strive, who actually TRY as compared to those who just show up and punch the clock.
I'm glad I believe.
Cheers.
start going back to church and maybe win the super jack-pot lottery..............LOL!!
Religious people are more educated? That makes me smile. I always have thought that most secular or atheist people were only pseudo intellectual.
Study also show that conservatives are happier than liberals. It's no surprise religious folks tend to be conservatives. Personal responsibilities are essential to our success as individual as taught by Christ- believing in a higher power is the difference between being happy and crumpy
I figure a lot of the same characteristics that tend one to religion also cross over to those that lead towards a lifestyle that, over the long term, lends itself to more career success. On the other hand, I don't believe it means that being religious is necessarily better, or that god makes sure you get a few more sheckels or your football team wins more.

So what CAN I do to make my football team win a Super Bowl? I'll try anything.
"The scope and scale of these good consequences are relatively straightforward. In the non-financial sphere, for example, faith tends to lead to happiness and optimism. More surprisingly, faith produces financial rewards. In a nutshell, research shows a positive correlation between income and religious practice."
The adverse is probably more true. Those with less income and who have had more difficulties in life would tend to have less faith and be less involved in any form of religious practice while those who have been given more then they actually deserve are more likely to be people of faith.
"Surveys typically find that, on average, those who practice Judeo-Christian faith traditions do better financially than non-religious people, all other things being equal."
It could be that those who do better financially are more likely to buy into the bull that is fed them by others. To suggest that a person would do better if he has faith is not only insulting but demonstrates how people can ignore the reality that history and our experience tells us that those who had real difficulties are less religious. Take Germany and France. Can you say the holocaust ended their faith?
Of course your all happier, ignorance is bliss right? Serious note, their is no credibility to this study. Their are far to many lurking variables and far to many samples that would need testing before a general conclusion is made. The "bible belt" is amongst the poorest and least educated in the country, the opposite of SLC. To say religeon alone is responsible isn't correct. If anything, I consistantly see my bosses hiring people of their same faiths, networking people into positions because they worship together.
I hope we are not equating that $$$$$ is the blessings of the righteous!
Far from it
I do not think Jesus had a very high salary, and I do not belive Jesus was Conservative either.
Maybe we should rethink or equations
Heritage Foundation. Look it up -- likely a slanted study from a biased org (agenda-driven) org? This agnostic but hopeful middle income chap thinks so.
Now if only we could instill some of these qualities in government and corporate america.
However though, I think it has more to do with how a person feels about themselves for the success they obtain. Some religious zealots are the biggest and most objectionable people I know and the least caring of others not in their clan.
I do believe that people can have character and respect without formal controlling religion. Most religions use it to create a crutch for those that lack self control or self respect. If you respect yourself, you tend to respect others.
I also think formal education is very overrated because education does not teach anything but narrow minded greed. Education does not teach you to be happy with yourself and your abilities or that you can educate yourself to your needs. Most of the great humanitarians and successful people of the world have never completed a formal education.
Degrees and formal education don't make the person, a persons abilities and desires are his degree. A real educated person is one that never stops wanting to learn from any source about any subject.
Mormons hire mormons.
If I employed a mormon and he/she said ONE word about their religion they'd be out the door so fast it'd make their head spin!
Of course I'm not mormon and so wouldn't ask their religion or their ward in the first place.
"The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic, is no more to the point than the fact than a drunken man is happier than a sober one." My moral compass is based off of being logical and rational. Not a tale of fiction that gives your life meaning.
The Heritage Foundation's mission (from their website):
Our Mission
To formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense.
That would mean that this study they have here is self-serving. It is like McDonald's advertising that the Big Mac is America's favorite burger, or Crest saying 4 out of 5 dentists prefer their toothpaste. It may be true, but since it helps their cause and the study was paid for with their money, you need to be very skeptical.
Biased study...
Shhhhhh!! To be fair, we don't think you are, "all a bunch of morons for believing in God."
We think you are "all a bunch of morons" for believing in a study done by the Heritage foundation... Even a two-year-old would be able to see the bias in this so-called “study”...
With all due respect, the institution that sponsored this study is the American Enterprise Institute, one of the most conservative "think tanks" on planet earth. It's equivalent to the Sutherland Institute here in Utah. I hardly doubt we should put much weight behind this study, although it might be true. The AEI's agenda often clouds good judgement.
