Wow a leg. A story about a leg. How about an article about saving lives not limbs.
If his leg hadn't been saved he probably would have lost his life. In a country like Haiti to be alive without a leg is a life sentence. If you've never been there, you can't imagine what it's like
Methinks someone missed the point. Sure a leg surgery might night be as glamorous as say a dramatic rescue or an orgran transplant done in a parking lot. The point is, they are down there, they are helping where they can. They had the chance to help this person, and they did. They made a contribution. Maybe we should all help out as much as these doctors did in OUR own way rather than sit here and demand more entertaining news.
well done doctors and nurses, prayers for everyone else. Its a tragic event and there are million suffering.
My brother is a physician in Haiti. Amputations happen 24/7. It has taken so long for aid to get to the victims that their injuries require it to save their lives. Doctors are working in horrific conditions--they are without proper sanitation and tools (i.e., x-ray film, water, anesthetic, tools to set bones). That someone kept their leg is a miracle right now. From our perspective it may seem insignificant; however, given the accounts I have read, I am so proud of the creativity and ingenuity of these physicians. They are overcoming HUGE obstacles and making a big difference. Rather than judge the hard work and results of those sacrificing so much to be there, I'm with Whitey, find a way to give and send money. Lives truly are hanging in the balance.
In response to "wow a leg" comment. YES, that is right... a leg, a leg that would have caused this person to DIE if left untreated. Infection is one of the MAIN problems those Dr's are dealing with right now. People are Dying of broken limbs due to infection....a broken leg, arm, finger! THEY ARE SAVING LIVES! .... really, really, maybe educate yourself about the issue before making a comment like like. Those Dr.'s are risking their lives to SAVE those LIMBS!
LDS first and leading the way. I am so proud set the example for all other organizations.
Oh wow? Way to spotlight the LDS. I should no better then try to go to the dnews for an objective news. All mormons all the time. I can't wait for the faith promoting stories that come out of this tragety.
Great update on the status of the LDS Humanitarian Aid Delegation. I want to read more of the good that they are doing. Bless them. Oh, and should "Annonymous" every experience and leg problems in the future, call me. I've got the perfect doctor in store!!
Dr.Matt Rawlins is my Son.Are proud of his service? Yes!
Wonderful doctors doing a great job under terrible conditions-
negative comments should only be given/listened to by someone who has been to Haiti and tried to help.
Why are you so bitter? These guys and girls are doing a fantastic job in conditions that you most likely can't comprehend! Think before you spout off!!!
A wonderful example of aid being given effectively to someone in danger of not only losing a "limb" but his life! Not to mention his ability to function somewhat effectively and work to support himself and/or his family when and if work becomes available to him in this devastated country. Imagine yourself in this situation - his leg and possibly his life has been saved but because of the drastic situation had to be released to the less than sanitary conditions of the damaged streets right after surgery! So many others need help, and while many have stepped up, there cannot possibly be enough to help so many people immediately.
Also, not a mention of whether or not he was LDS! Just relevant news to those of us interested in the distribution of aid which we helped to fund, and the individuals who stepped up and volunteered to donate their own time, talents, comfort, safety, and livelihood (for however long they are there unable to work for pay in their profession). These doctors and nurses are working in a somewhat functioning local hospital providing services to any and all who are brought to them.
It is unfortunate that a few venomous and hateful individuals would pick, pick, pick at the LDS. Good grief, we have a reporter that is specifying the identifier LDS to attract reader interest.
PICK, PICK, PICK. Get a life critics. Much good is being done. You are nothing but spewing your venomous hatred.
Perhaps your time might be better served if you put your angst into service.
This medical team made a larger contribution to humanity during the course of this single clinical procedure than you have made in your ENTIRE life. Just an FYI wiseguy...
Just imagine what thier going thru to help these desperate and very injured people
This has been such a sad Crisis its great news that these Doctors and nurses donate thier time.
I salute you all you have done to save a life~

"Wow a leg. A story about a leg. How about an article about saving lives not limbs."
From the news article:
"If not treated immediately, the leg eventually would become infected with gangrene from the dying muscles and ultimately need to be amputated."
It sounds like this story IS about saving lives.
I hear some newspapers are seeking average citizens to fill the roles of reporters in Haiti--
--people critical of the medical work being done there, and critical of the reports about it.
Interested in signing up???
There's venom and anger going both ways in these posts...
Re: Anonymous - Isn't every life precious in the eyes of God? I was born and grew up in Utah. I still love it there - But! It's much easier to be accepted as a member of the Church in other states. Many people think Mormons do good! Being one - I agree. "Great things can be accomplished if no one cares who gets the credit" Why shouldn't members of the LDS church receive "credit" for doing good; as well as members of other churches which we see every day? What do you expect from Utah? Home of the Mormon church!
I imagine for this man it was more than "just a leg" Thank you D news fr letting us know of someof the relief effort going on so we can remember to donate our money to humanitarian efforts. I'm in no situation to go to Haiti myself but I am so grateful for the LDS humanitarian relief, the Red Cross and so many other non profits that are making a difference.
