Article VI, Section 8. [Legislator, privilege from arrest.]
Members of the Legislature, in all cases except treason, felony or breach of the peace, shall be privileged from arrest during each session of the Legislature, for fifteen days next preceding each session, and in returning therefrom; and for words used in any speech or debate in either house, they shall not be questioned in any other place.
If you do know him you wouldn't be writing those things.
My best wishes and prayers go out to Senator Kilpack and his family. This is a difficult issue to address and I wish only the best for them.
In my opinion DUI's which result in deaths (gratefully this one did not) should be a death penalty offence as driving drunk is a premeditated act. DUI should always carry jail time, the very first time.
Much worse issues, tell me Mr. Waddoups what exactly is worse than driving under the influence and placing the driving public at risk of death and injury and by a man who knows the pain of loss at the hands of a drunk driver. I think that makes it even worse. As the aunt of a young man killed by a drunk driver, I say Killpack should leave his political post immediately and should go to jail if found guilty as he does not seem to be disputing that he was drunk.
However, that said.....
It shouldn't take a caucus to decide to remove him from his leadership post. A real man, a contrite man, who is truly sorry, would step down, and show that he is honest and sincere about his apology for such bad judgment.
Seems like everyone in the public eye figures crying and saying I am sorry, is all that is needed for forgiveness, but forgiveness comes from making amends for what you did, and taking the responsibility of it all. Mark McGwire cries on TV because he took steroids and shattered hallowed records, but I am not seeing him telling MLB to remove his name from the books because his numbers were tainted.
No good parent would just accept "I'm sorry" from a child who broke a window. We make them replace the window, work for the money, or provide some other type of effort, as a way to show true contrition.
Killpack needs to learn this, and be a real man about it,not just someone worried about re-election.
