How about we cut Butters' salary? See what he can do without! Let's save money by slashing all of our elected officials' salaries! Why do they deserve to live so well when their constituents are living so poorly?
You can not get bus service unless you live more then a mile from the school.
What does he suggest we do about parents that do not have cars?
A mile or more is a long ways for a 5 year old to walk each day sometimes in bad or smoggy (pollution) weather?
How are they going to get home? or to day care if the parent is working.
Should the poor parents stop working and go on welfare because they have to drop the kid off and pick them up?
Maybe we should eliminate the good senator's lifetime medical coverage.
Where else but in Utah could this guy function? He is a blight to the state and to rational minded people who care about there kids.
Cutting high school buses would deprive many students of the opportunity to attend school.
Here's a radical idea. How about INCREASING the amount of busing. Stop building expensive parking lots and trying to coordinate ridiculous drop-off plans. The idea that our children are walking to school from 2 miles away is quaint, but no one does it.
In today's safety-concious environment, most parents don't have direct bussing to schools are dropping their children off at school themselves, at least until the little darlings are 16 or 17 and become a road hazard. Sure, it would cost a little more in taxes to increase the amount of school busing that we do, but how much collectively would be saved in lost time, money, and pollution from all the parent's cars that were taken off the road? This is another of Senator Buttars' ideas that goes the WRONG direction.
This is a good suggestion for some districts.
While school districts in rural counties may need as many buses as possible, many districts along the Wasatch Front could benefit from taking this suggestion. For example, where I live, the high school student parking lot is full of cars every school day, while many of the school buses are only partly full.
School district administrators ought to take this suggestion to heart and see if their busing programs could be changed to take into account the fact that older students may not need the buses or perhaps they could car-pool to school or walk.
That would save a lot of money.
To "buses," how many 5-year old high school students do you know?
"A mile or more is a long ways for a 5 year old to walk each day sometimes in bad or smoggy (pollution) weather?"
Did you bother to READ the article. We are talking about high school students. Although I do not disagree with what you are saying, it probably would help your argument if you actually read what is aid.
I guess every high school student in the state is of driving age (not), has a car (not), and lives within 2 miles of the school (not). Many young people travel 10-20 miles each way to high school on a bus. Not everyone lives on the Wasatch Front.
Following our great governors lead, why not make schools 4 days per week, increase the time by an hour a day, since Fridays are normally half days, the hours in school shouldn't be altered much.
Think of running the buses one less day a week, 20% reduction right there. Wouldn't have to have so many after school programs, as the kids are there.
It seem that Butters is at it again. Does he think before he opens his mouth? I must find out what district this guy is representing.....tell me that it isn't the same district that wants a bridge across Utah Lake? Or is trying to turn Utah into the World Nuclear Dump.
I have just got to meet these people and sell them swamp land in Mexico.

Instead of busing, send them to the Boys Ranch. Why is Buttars always trying to cut education funding? Hm...
It's a great idea! Most high school students drive themselves to school.
This guy has lost touch with reality...long ago. Please remember his name at election time and shut him up.
Here comes the 2010 legislative session with Butters spouting off to the media and getting people riled up! Oh boy. Can't wait to hear the foot in mouth comments Butters makes this year. Yea, ditch the buses and bring Daddy's tractor or 4-wheeler to school like the guys in Millard Co. are joking about. Then they could increase revenue for the county and city by having the local "school resource officers" arrest them and ticketing them for riding said "illegal" transport to school. A win-win for both the district and the court ticket revenue!
Five year olds are pretty smart now. Some of them are taking high school classes at this age. High school kids are in college in some cases.
ok, you caught me, still a stupid idea however. I would not want my 15 year old daughter walking to school. I really would not like it if they were walking in this funky air.
I know my son could not get a school bus ride so he would take UTA. Maybe this should be used more for high school kids. The problem is that UTA buses are not that reliable, often they just do not show up on time, sometimes they do not show up at all.
Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.
Is this guy serious?
to Buses----He is talking about high school students.
I really think that the savings could come in other areas.
1. Cut administrators salaries by 33%--they can certainly live on less than what they are being paid!
2. Cut activities trips by 50%. It is stupid to haul students all over the state for various activities. Leave them in the classroom where they can learn something worthwhile!
3. Eliminate attendance at all these seminars and conferences that school personnel attend. It is called "belt-tightening" and we eliminate these expenses when times are tough.
4. There are other frill expenses that can be done without until our economy recovers. We can do without having "the latest, the best, the neatest" until we can afford it.
