It's too bad that this was a private ceremoney where the citizens had to have an invitation. Not really setting a good example of being open by having a closed meeting for your swearing in. I do wish the new mayor the best of luck though.
I am Speechless.
There is of course nothing wrong with this, I am sure that the lady is well educated and six years on the city council, I am sure she is qualified.
Of course people see Color, it just does Not matter to most people anymore. That is a good thing.
I assume her Maiden name was Mia something else.
She cannot help it if her Husbands last name is Love.
I will be happy when the 1st Black, Asian, Hispanic, Native American, etc. Elected to anything becomes Not News other then Mrs. Love a Qualified, Legal, American Citizen was elected to the Mayors Office.
As a person who ran for City Council and School Board in a Small Oregon Town, Ten Years ago. I was on the same Ballot and Info Book as Bush, only way in the Back, Ugly Picture real short profile. I just have to ask if this is a paying Job? As the one I ran for was not.
I ran some spots on the local cable companies ad channel. $5 each and that was a 1st.
Money has a lot to do with who runs and who is in Office.
Good for her.
I am sure she will do a fine job.
Congratulations Mia Love. Best wishes in sticking with your convictions and having lots of energy for the job.
I am very happy to see Mrs. Love as Mayor of Saratoga Springs! I wish her well in her new job!
And I would like to say,how classy it was for out going Mayor Parker the way he gave Mrs. Love the nameplate!
Congratulations! There is a show of proof, that as far as a State goes, racism isn't there. Now of course, from individuals, there is, no state is ammune to it, but the theory of a state full of racists can help be put to rest. This is also an example of someone who didn't worry about it, anddidn't use it as an excuse not to run. But saw an opportunity, and achieved it. If she can do it, anyone can, if they have the drive, conviction, and never quit attitude. Too many times Utah gets bashed, when it doesn't deserve it. All it takes is folks, who are a minority to stay, rather then look for the negative in people, places, or things, so they can be right. When it isn't really there. I bet she didn't even use the race card.
A black woman mayor in a predominately white city...reverse discrimination? No, just a well qualified citizen ready to serve her community. Go Mia!
This is great. Best wishes to you, Mayor.
Deseret News is racist publishing this story!!! Referring to or talking about race is racism. Preferential treatment of any race is racism. Who cares what the color of skin is!!! is the mayor right for the job is all at matters. And everytime another story comes out it only serves as a reminder to "dark skinned" people everywhere of their past.
Put it behind you Desnews writers. You're living in a modern world where skin color doesn't exist.
I'm not exactly sure of the point you're trying to make with your comment. Or even if you had one, considering it was 3 am in the morning when you posted. Please focus your comments on the article- not on your own political aspirations or whatever.
I too wish that there had been more publicity about Ms. Love taking office since this is the first I heard of it but maybe the fact that there wasn't is encouraging as it means people really DON'T see color in Saratoga Springs and see Ms. Love's election as very ordinary.
I would just like to congratulate her on her historic achievement. I'm sure she will be a great mayor and who knows what else after that? We need more people who know what they stand for in politics and she sounds like someone with strong convictions. Congratulations Ms. Love!
There are many questions that I want to have answered that this article does not address. I will give more insight soon if I can find it.
Still, this is a good time. It will not though disuade those who chant "Mormons are racists".
That is so great! congratulations!
I wish we could have more beautiful mayors like her instead of the trash we get like Rocky Anderson.
Rocky Anderson is all about discrimination.
Mia Love is all about the love! And she is pretty!
To the 3:15 commentor,
You have no clue of what they did not say in the article.
What race is Mr. Love? What religion is Mrs. Love? Where was she born? What college does she have a degree from?
The one I really wish was answered is, how many children does Mrs. Love have? I know the answer to all the other questions, but I can only so far answer the last question as of 5 years ago, so I do not have the definitive answer yet.
I was tempted to give the answers, but I decided your claim of "emphasizing race" had to be answered in a way that pointed out what aspects of race had not been played.
Well, at least as of last November Mia and Jason had three children.
This leads to a new question. Has a Utah mayor ever been pregnant while in office?
Brigham Young is rolling in his grave!
Congragulations Mrs. Love this is a HUGE step forward in klnocking down old racial barriers that exist. Even though you are a republican good luck to you an may you do a fine job .
To the 8:09 commentator,
African-Americans do not need newspaper articles to remind them of the past. They don't even need the past. This is especially true if they have a Euro-American husband or wife. They just need to have a visitor come to a family gathering and then be stared down by someone who think they "don't belong".
There are so many stereotypes against African-Americans that my only complaint would be that this article is too short, and does not blow holes in them.
Of course, maybe you know more than you admit, and maybe your real gripe is that you think "people should marry their own kind". Of course how that relates to an LDS couple that I am 90% sure got married in the temple is beyound me.
I am just glad for Mia that she lives in Utah where there are few nannies. I can just imagine how she would be treated in Georgia if she came to take her eight-year-old daughter out of school. "Oh, miss, I see your employer has sent you to take her daughter to the dentist, do you have a permission slip".
Actually, "Rocky" it is Ross Anderson and his friends who are seething in rage.
Maybe Maxime Walters can help Ross and his Democrat allies by giving another speech about what she thinks of African-Americans who have Euro-American spouses.
Still my favorite quote on this subject was from a Tribune Article last November, when a reporter asked someone "what do you think of Mia's race" the person asked thought that the person was asking about Mrs. Love running a half-marathon.
What in the world was your comment about? I think he's rejoicing in heaven, buddy.
