I liked everything except take exception to the third world country remark. I think if the person quoted went outside the tourist areas of many second and third world nations she would people living no where near like the poorest American.

But it isn't a contest to who needs the most help. We are called to help each not, not find the neediest person and help them before moving on to the next neediest.

There are extremely poor people everywhere, even here. Just open your eyes and help.

What a great idea for a book!

Just thinking about the "everyday philanthropist" idea has brightened my day. Thanks for a wonderful article!

I agree with "K"
"There are people in the U.S. that live like people in a Third World country. ... I go down there, and it just makes me so grateful for what I have."

Nonsense.. I went to Baja Mexico (8miles over the border) and helped families 6 times in 2007.
The poorest of any here in the us is MUCH better off.
Mexico has NO support system. Virtually NO homeless shelters. No welfare. The people we worked with had a blue tarp pulled over some pallets.
No, its not the same here. as the old saying goes, "Nobody starves in america" its true.. You could literally live off of the garbage waste here and survive.

Now, with that said. I think its a wonderful idea to help anyone in need, USA or other. There are many suffering here in the USA that need our help. If we have it, we should give.
But to compare the poor here with the poor in 3rd worlds is a silly comparison.

I am part of a group called Kaiizen. The group focuses on helping orphans and underprivileged children in third world countries. This article was great! It really means so much to those who receive and give when service is rendered. Thank you for including websites where people can go and find things they can do to help in the community.
