I knew Bill when I worked and Lived at Alta in 1979/80. He was a great mayor and innkeeper. I wish there were a hundred more men like him. Condolences to the family.

Unbelievable!

Alta is fascist? Really? It's a ski resort you meat head! Unbelievable that some people can be so dumb. What a moronic thing to post.

My prayers and best wishes go to the Levitt family in this time of sorrow and need.

Godspeed and God Bless.

Mayor Bill...a great man. I lived/worked at the Alta lodge 1993-1997. He was inspirational. RIP

AL Ex Emp

As for the negative comment...that person clearly has a sad/pathetic life to write such a thing. RIP Bill

Seth Dionne

As an ex-employee of the AL and many other places-Alta I can say with certainty that Alta owes everything to Mayor Levitt. He tried to preserve the natural simplicity that makes Alta special. It's a shame to see him go, he will be missed. My condolences to Mimi and the family.

Snowball

Fascist might be a little strong but it is one of the only ski resorts in America left that willingly and purposfully discriminates against a certain group of people. I wouldn't want that on my conscience.

Really?

Snowball, hence the word SKI resort, Alta is not at all discriminative, in my opinion. My, my, it must suck to be an angry person. May this great man rest in peace.

Rest in Peace Mayor

I agree with Seth Dionne. Alta is Alta because of Mayor Levitt. He was a fierce protector of the environment of the area and of the entrepreneurial and recreational opportunities it provided. A fine balance to which those who wish to despoil the earth in the name of profit should aspire. Thanks for the example Mayor and for all of the great things you did for Alta and our state.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Levitt family. Mayor Levitt will truly be missed.

I worked and lived at the AL for five years. The mayor was a great man. As Marcus was quoted, "..a liberal in the best sense..." Peace to the Levitt family, who provided me with a home, a hearth and the experience of a life time.

Possibly Good news!

I skied Alta 28 years ago along with Snowbird. Wonderful place. Let's hope the resort opens up to snowboarders - I wanted to take my son there when I visited him at BYU but the resort doesn't allow snowboarders. Perhaps by the time he gets back from his mission, the resort may have "moved on" from its previous prejudices.

RIP

He was a wonderful guy and will be sorely missed.

Bill Levitt was one of the finest public servants in Utah history. He was a man of integrity and a man who had the unique ability to cross party lines, and build coalitions for the common good of local government in Salt Lake County. You may have disagreed with some of his proposals; but you never questioned his heart and commitment to good public policy. He left a legacy and example of how elected officials should conduct the publics business. One of the blessings of my life was to have known this man and to have called him a friend. My thoughts and prayers are with the Levitt family and his "Alta family."

Erin

Levitt family, PLEASE don't buckle under the pressure! Preserve your dad's legacy and continue to keep Alta as a "skiers only" retreat!

?

Who's Bill Levitt?

Fredda

I was introduced to the Alta Lodge and Bill in 1970. It became my home away from home, including one winter as an "emp" in 1980. Bill was a leader, a negotiator and a wonderful advisor and mentor to many - including me. He led Alta's progress, while keeping it pristine - no small feat. He will be missed, but his values will remain - he instilled them in every heart of everyone who ever stayed or worked there! My thoughts are with the whole family. God speed Bill!

As an 'ex' emp and there are many, many of us Bill had a profound influence on us all. To those of you that think this is 'good news' and that snowboarders will now be allowed. You are wrong, "Alta IS for skiers" and this has been true and will remain so. Even though Bill, the lodges, employees, ex- emps and friends of Alta wanted to keep this joyous mountain hamlet pristine to keep snowboarders out of the resort was never our decision. Do your homework before you make such uncaring and sickening remarks about this great man. He will be dearly missed and believe it or not he did a great deal for YOU citizens of Utah not just those of us who love Alta.

I worked at the Alta Lodge for several years in the early 1980s. Bill Levitt is one of the most remarkable people I've ever met. He was kind, generous and caring. Alta is the way it is because of Bill Levitt - Thank goodness he was there because Alta is the Greatest Place on Earth. Bill Levitt will be missed by many and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family. From one more person/ex-emp who loves Alta - Living there was a life changing experience for me. Keep Alta the way it is!!

I escaped Utah and moved to the Alta Lodge in the 80s. The whole Levitt family had a profound influence on my life. Mimi, Bino, Toby, John, Cassie, and families, my thoughts are with you.

An amazing man. I had the privilege of talking with Bill over dinner a few years ago while staying at the Alta lodge. It is because of Bill, that Alta is not some obnoxious over-commercialized spa like mamby pamby ski resort. Alta is truly unique and I hope his heirs continue to fight to keep Alta what it is. One of a kind. BTW snowboarders, Alta is the only place in the country that does not allow your boards. Get over it. We have one last bastion left. There is something about skiing a mountain that has not had its lines screwed up by the arc of snowboards.
