What does "health of the mother" entail?
if it were your daughter, or wife, and there was say, an 80% chance of death to her, in completing a pregnancy, is that grounds enough to terminate the pregnancy?
What about if it were 50% chance?
How about 30%.
Mr. Wimmer, if your daughter had a 5% chance of dying in childbirth, is that "low" enough, that YOU'D risk her life? Is it?
The State is running a budget shortfall and one of our representatives is going to waste precious state funds passing a "message bill" that he admits will have no practical effect. If Wimmer and other conservatives really wanted to limit abortion, they'd take the money they waste on message bills and provide family planning services. That would actually save unborn children's lives. But that isn't really what Wimmer wants. He doesn't want to be pro-family planning, he wants to be anti-abortion. Pity they should ever meet. Just like Wimmer and an intelligent thought. No chance of those two meeting.
this rep has no business trying to mess with a LEGAL MEDICAL procedure. Woman deserve to keep the freedom to chose legal medical procedures without having to worry that some clueless man will try to force his own world-view on their medical care.
Instead of seeking to penalize and punish the poor women who are considering abortion, how about legislating incentives for them to carry the child to full term (and possibly, place it for adoption)?
Yes, abortion is legal. That isn't going to go away, and as conservative and pro-life as I am, I don't think it should. However, I think too many people use abortion as a contraceptive - something that by definition it cannot be (it isn't a contraceptive if you've already conceived).
I think the root of the problem (actually, this and many other problems in this country) is too many parents failing to teach their children the concept of personal responsibility and accountability. I know that kids who want to have sex will, and there is little parents can do about it. But good parents will teach their children to think about what they choose to do, the consequences of their actions, and what to do to mitigate unwanted consequences.
Specifically, I don't want my daughter having sex until she's married. However, I also want her to know how to keep from getting pregnant if she should choose to have sex. Utah's high abortion rate is due partly to my fellow LDS parents only teaching abstinence.
I don't know if this is the case in Utah, but in New Jersey a single mother on welfare used to get more assistance if the number of children she had went up. My step-father overheard a very disturbing conversation while in line at the DMV one day. It went like this:
"You're pregnant again?"
"Yeah."
"Who's the dad?"
"I don't know. I slept with every guy I could until I got pregnant."
"Why?"
"I want to get into a bigger apartment, and I only need one more kid to get my check big enough."
"Didn't you hear? They changed the law, so your checks aren't going to get any bigger for more kids."
"No, I didn't know that. Guess I'll go get an abortion."
No, that's not word for word, but that's essentially what was said between these two young women. What doesn't come through is the cavalier attitude the pregnant girl had about getting pregnant, not knowing who the father was, or deciding for convenience sake to get an abortion.
So much for small government and keep government out of healthcare.
What's with this male dominated obsession with abortions?
Perhaps if we as "poor women" were to exercise control over our own bodies by using birth control or being responsible for our sexual behavior then we wouldn't need to resort to abortion. Let's be honest, it is the minority of pregnancies which are terminated because the life of the mother is at risk, or because of incest/rape. I do agree that these are valid reasons for a woman to consider terminating her pregnancy, to preserve her life or because the pregnancy was not of her choosing.
However, abortions are more often a response to solving the result of irresponsible sexual behavior. As a mother, I cannot imagine taking the life of any of my children for convenience. If you don't want an abortion, then don't be sexually irresponsible.
To all those who think men should butt out of this issue, perhaps the law should read that if the fetus is male then the abortion is illegal?
For those who wish to see abortion placed under more careful controls, this issue has always been about saving a life that would otherwise be slain.
A fetus can't debate the sophistry of prochoice opposition, but every voting citizen can... Just grateful I wasn't aborted, and would love for every life to have the same opportunity.
Best regards...
Thank you Paul in MD for this information. I recommend that the State of Utah have an official stand in line at Paul's step-fathers DMV to listen to the conversations of random strangers. That's how policy should be done.
Keep your conscience out of my body.
Boooo! If you can't do anything good in the legislature, just resign and let somebody else try.
Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed the picture.
Yes, big mean men trying to control women's bodies. Women's bodies aren't the issue, it is the life that has been created.
Mental health? Is having to "deal with a baby" too stressful. This is a fetus rights issue. If you are raped, or will die from childbirth, I think abortion is a medical issue. If childbirth is an incovenience for you, or embarrasing to you, or if you don't want stretch marks, don't kill the baby to make your life easier. Put the baby up for adoption. Do you really want to kill a baby? Think about what abortion really is.
The abortion issue affects both men and women. Fetuses come in both genders. Cherish Life.
So let's pretend that we've done a thorough, amazing job of teaching contraception and it's available to EVERYONE. Does that mean that we can reach the point that there would be no such thing as an unwanted or unplanned pregnancy? And therefore, we don't need legalized abortion because every pregnancy must have been wanted?
Are we saying that every one of these aborted pregnancies are from women that don't know enough about contraception?
So, maybe the approach here is put enough money into family planning to take away the excuse of ignorance and then outlaw abortion except in the case of rape, incest or to protect the health of the mother.
Really, how many pregnancies are resulting from ignorance, or 'I just couldn't get access to contraceptives.'?
After all that has been said and done in our world, does anyone really believe that?
Contrary to what Wimmer may think, women who have gone through the agony of deciding whether to have an abortion know exactly what they are doing. Stop trying to force women to be broodmares. Wimmer -- get your nose out of our uteruses and private decisions, mind your own busines, and tend to your own concerns. NOT OURS!
The number of abortions performed in this country since its legalization is somewhere near 50 million. Forty-four million was the last definitive answer I found, but that was several years ago, so I'm not sure where it's at today. But taken from the 44 million number, the sum total of those abortions that were performed due to rape or incest, health of the mother, and health of the child, only came to up to 3.5 million. The other 41.5 million abortions were for convenience. As a woman, I find that nauseating.
As far as I'm concerned, the choice was made when you chose to have unprotected sex. If you don't want to keep the baby, give it up for adoption. Many adoptive couples are happy to pay all medical costs, if that's what you're looking for. An abortion is not a woman exercising control over her own body, it's a woman exercising control over the body of an unborn child, and it's disgusting.
The baby cannot protect itself so when the mother will not do it the state has to step in to save lives. If we ceased killing the unborn the state would not have to step in.
As usual some people are thinking of themselves and not the innocent and helpless.
Send the bill to Wimmer and his caucus, Iam sick of paying for his message bills.
