Dick says, "In 2001, a 12-0 BYU football team received a letter from the BCS informing the Cougars they were "released" from consideration for a BCS bowl that season. The decision fueled new pressure on the BCS..."
Dick - BYU has never had a team that pressured the BCS. If that 2001 BYU team hadn't been waxed by Hawaii it would have pressured the BCS.
But as it turned out the Hawaii blowout and the subsequent loss to Louisville in the bowl game only served to justify the BCS release of BYU.
I think the point was made the BCS sent the letter before the Hawaii game. Now I will go back to my chant, Utah is the greatest, Utah is the greatest, Utah is the greatest. Soon I will believe.
I vote BYU to the Big Sky. They will not have TCU on their schedule.
Both of utah's undefeated teams were not even in the same league as the national chmapions of those respective years. utah had very good seasons, but they couldn't beat Florida or the 2004 champion. In fact, utah would have lost to both by 3+TDs both years.
Only if Utah goes with them as they beat Utah all the time. Also, TCU would need to go as this is only the second time TCU beat BYU. Seems like the comment is unsubstantiated.
All of this is ridiculous.. The bcs is not going to change anytime soon. All we can do is keep on winning our lower tier bowls because the bcs will not let us compete. It's great that Utah and tcu have broken the bcs let them finish #2 all they want. Moral of the story is the MFN west wo t get an auto bcs bid. The teams in the MFN wests only chances were before the bcs era. Utah where's ur Natl. Championship?
Re: 10:02 p.m.
It is true that the BCS release letter was sent before the Hawaii game.
But, Dick conveniently omits that two quick scores by the Rainbows changed any "pressure" the BCS may have felt from the 12-0 Cougars to justification that were not worthy of a BCS bowl invitation.
Rather than pressure the BCS, the Hawaii loss together with the Cougars subsequent bowl loss to 22nd ranked Louisville only served to reinforce the perception that MWC teams could not compete at the BCS level.
The fact is that BYU has never seriously pressured the BCS for a bowl bid.
BYU's mythical '84 NC team would have lost by 4+TD's against any of the 1 or 2 loss teams in the big name conferences that year.
Hey Spanky!!!
Define mythical.
Touch the NC. Feel the NC. Smell the NC.
Click you heels three times Dorothy, but it'w still in the Tropy Case.
How sweet it is that it is there, and if you could only wish it away...
RE: Let's be honest 2 10:38
It's too bad your yewt team will never touch the NC...Feel the NC.... nor smell the NC.
So when it comes to BCS bowls, the Cougars have been closer than the Utes will ever be!!
Of course I never purchased nor watched the yewts Sugar Bowl video reruns.
The BCS rocks!!!
If TCU or BSU or Cincinnati were ranked 1 or 2 they would be playing for the NC. Alabama and Texas earned that right this year. Many of us are tired of all your crying.
I thought the story was about getting a playoff system. I would like a playoff system, I know a playoff system would be great. No more dumb chatter about this team would have beaten that team. It would be all proven on the field like it should be. Not by a computer and some coach's looking out for their own best interest.
"Myths are stories that usually explain something about the world and involve gods and other supernatural beings."
So Utah fans are saying the 84 team involved God, and (Boscoe-esque) other supernatural beings?
Austin Collie would be villified if "he" made such a claim.
But, Ute fans, since everything you guys claim is the only truth, I won't argue, although as a BYU fan, I think they were only college kids...
Maybe this explains the Ute's claim???
look buddy, everybody thought Utah was gonna get waxed by Alabama last year (I'm sure you were one of them). How can you say that they couldn't have competed for the National Championship without giving them a chance? Utah beat more ranked teams last year than Florida and their margin of victory against Alabama was much higher. Maybe Utah would've lost by 3 or more touchdowns, maybe not. The fact is that it's not something you can just speculate about and vote on. It needs to be decided on the field. Nobody wants to hear about your lame predictions about past football teams. How about we concentrate on the future and work towards bringing a system to college football that won't leave us wondering at the end of the season.
Re: Let's be honest
Your bias is showing through. We will never know if Utah could have defeated the National Champions in either of their undefeated seasons.
Not because Utah wasn't good enough ... but because the CASTE system prevented them from proving it on the field.
When a playoff comes (and it will) I'll be dancing on the grave of the BCS.
My hope is that the first National Championship playoff results in one of the "little guys" winning the title.
Why?
Just so we can rub it in the arrogant faces of those who deemed us unworthy.
Hey former ute fan. i dont claim 'lets be honest' as a yewt fan cause he aint. And the utes have done twice this decade what the cougars did in 1984 and we dont have are NC only because of the rediculous system that didnt exist then. It's ok because i RIGHTFULLY feel like one. (except that i didn't play, i only watched. but still...)
And NO, TEXAS DID NO EARN THE RIGHT TO PLAY FOR THE NC! TCU DID! go compare the teams and look at the stats and yada yada yada and you'll see.
go 'yewts'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very interesting story. It's good that Utahns are taking matters into their own hands rather than sitting on their duffs like Idahoans.
I ask, which is a better bowl game (mind you, I asked a better bowl game, not which one pays out more or has the BCS name attached to it...1) #15 BYU vs. #16 Oregon State (2009) OR #6 Utah vs. #19 Pittsburgh (2004). Both games were nationally televised on ESPN. Better yet, TCU's BCS-busting year is rewarded with playing another non-AQ (non-BCS) team. So all these people crying about BYU not making a BCS bowl doesn't mean much. The only legit bowl that was better was Utah vs 'Bama 2008. Think about it... seriously consider what you've just rea--money aside, BcS name aside. All games were televised on ESPN! If BYU going BCS-busting this year, meant the Cougars would play Boise State, then what's to be overly excited about (no dis on BSU, by the way)? Seems that the Vegas Bowl was a pretty great matchup and could propel BYU into the top 10. I'm just sayin'...
It gets a little tiring with these Y-Ute back and forth bickerings on these blogs.
It all comes down to having the chance to prove yourselves on the field and not caring about what the polls say. BYU deserved the chance in 2001, Utah deserved the chance twice, TCU and Boise State deserved the chance this year (BSU several times).
Playoffs give ANY team to prove their wares. The pursuit of fairness is never a whining moment since it is the right thing to do.
Can't we all just get along...(sniffle)
