Big deal?

What's with all the stories about the 1st decade of the century? There's still another year to go before it is over!

@Big deal?

Are you really that dumb? 2010 is the first year of the new decade. By your logic, the year 2000 was part of the '90s.

I guess they forgot to mention the latest craze: In n' Out Burger.

Big Deal: You are right. The first decade began in 2001 and will not end until the end of 2010. I don't know why people can't count.

Oh Sure! Considering most of the Hispanics are Illegal Immigrants that Utah hands out Drivers Licences freely too! Lets not forget who is spending the Billions to remodel downtown while people are homeless and starving in Utah!
Get real people!

Our population is expanding so quickly because we believe in family. That is why I first came to america is to have a good job that would be able to provide for my wife and 4 children. I have found that here in Utah. I am so greatful! Viva La Raza!

As far as I'm concerned the world is welcome to visit but please leave afterwards, I loved the old provincal, uptight, behind the times Utah and hate what the state is turning into, an illegal alien's dream. Just in case you think I'm a Mormon, I'm not. I was born and raised here and I think my State is being ruined by the influx of those who would change the character of the state. I don't want neighborhood bars, illegal immigrants, Spanish as a first language, gangs, and police who pick and choose which laws to enforce. Thank goodness, I'm old and won't have to live to see this State in the next 25 years.

To Kevin

As long as you came legally you are welcome to be here and enjoy the American Dream for which many legal immigrants have waited patiently for years to acheive.

If you violated our laws and borders to come here to improve your life then you have no right to be here. If you are illegal then how can you set a good example for your children and family and show them how to uphold the law if you are a criminal? Illegals are parasites, stealing the dream of legal immigrants and citizens alike. Also I see your commitment to America in your statement "Viva La Raza" which is so offensive to American citizens and legal immigrants who sacrificed to come here and who love this country and the opporunities it provides them.

To @Big deal?

Big deal is exactly right. You start counting from one, don't you? Therefore, the decade goes from 1 to 10, or in other words from 2001 to 2010. 2000, not 1999, was the last year of the 20th century, the 2nd millenium, and the decade of the 90s.

This Centurys first decade ends Dec 31, 2010.

I agree, there is still a year to go in the century's first decade because the decade, the century, and the millenium that we are now in techically did not begin until 1 January 2001. This is because there was no Year 0 -- there was 1 BC and the year following was AD 1. So when AD 1000 rolled around, only 999 years had passed since the odometer had been reset. Thus, when AD 2000 came, only 1,999 years had passed.

Go to Google and type in "when did the millenium start" and educate yourself.

Gimme a Break

Who cares about the dates, we should be more concerned about the "changing face" of Utah. It's getting uglier by the minute because of the influx of those who move here for the job market, family oriented life-style and then proceed to critize and destroy our way of life. We are being overrun by illegals. I bet they don't care about when the decade began.

Come on.

I agree, educate yourself. A decade is an arbitrary period of ten years. It doesn't matter where you start the decade. If the Deseret News chooses to write an article on the last decade (which would be from 2000 - 2009) then they are free to do so, even if one of those years was from the 20th century.

Big Dog

@Zadruga: That's funny! I don't think one person had a calendar 2010 years ago that said AD OR BC! LOL

What are you doing?

So many people are complaining that our community is being ruined by the new people moving in here. My question is "what are you doing to fix it?" Are you getting to know your new neighbors and extending a hand of friendship regardless of their beliefs and lifestyles? Are you reaching out to help at-risk youth trying to help keep them from getting involved with gangs? Are you working at the homeless shelter or food bank? Are you doing anything to make this state a better place? Instead of complaining, get out and make a difference. We need to be better neighbors to each other--and that will help with many of our social problems.

Huh

I'm doing plenty to help, volunteering in schools, donating to local charities which help legal immigrants assimilate. My family also volunteers at the homeless shelter, serving meals and gathering blankets. I am also teaching English to legal refugees. However, I want nothing to do with groups which promote illegal entry into this country. I am more than willing to help those who came here legally. I don't want to be a good neighbor to criminals who are ruining my community.

Fix It?

I would prefer to fix the problem which is illegal immigration not a lack of neighborliness or failure to extend a hand of friendship. I don't think providing all kinds of charitable services to those who have broken the law is an appropriate way to fix the real problem. Fixing it would be acheived by deporting all illegals and allowing us to focus our charitable efforts on those who have upheld and sustained the law. I agree many social problems can be helped by friendship and neighborliness but not all. Sometimes we have to enforce the law.

@Come On

True, a decade ends each year. But the DNews is not writing about the end of "a" decade, they are writing about the end of THE decade. And they are incorrect in so doing. Facts are facts; regardless of whether 99.9999% believe that the first decade of the 21st century is now ending, it is in fact not. Shame on the DNews for perpetuating a belief that they KNOW to be incorrect.

Just a point

If America's traditional way of handling illegal immigrants taking advantage of resources that don't belong to them were to ship them home, we wouldn't have any people of European descent in Utah or anywhere else.

Oh wait, but that was okay, because those people were white. They were entitled to take what wasn't theirs. And now that it's several centuries later, that makes it okay.

Get a sense of history before you criticize an entire group based on their "illegality".

Duggan

In Mexico, most friends I know that are from there say that a century begins and ends with your birth date. Born Dec 30th 1999? Then Dec 30, 2009 is a completed century.
The Utah we knew is going by-way of the oceans, mountains, fresh water supply, and land a plenty.
Far to many people, no matter if they are home grown or imports.
I hate to speak what nobody wants to hear, but, we are truly doomed. Hug your grandkids. What we forced them to indure in the future is a sin.
