I've seen many big light displays, but Temple Square just FEELS better.
Sounds and looks so beautiful. I wish I didn't live so far away. I would make the pilgrimage to see them also.
Merry Christmas to everyone.....
May peace be in your heart during this time and always in 2010.
The Temple Square lighting display is a wonderful gift to the community. Thank you.
Temple square's lighting is wonderful. It makes the holidays come alive. It's a great safe place to take a date too.
Oh and the new LED lights really look nice, consume FAR LESS energy. So it's a smart move, cuz it'll save the church a ton in lighting costs.
You know what some call making a property feel welcoming, with lights and flowers and such. Then, without warning, ask those very same people you invited onto your property to 'act' a certain way without notice?
Bait.
The Temple Square lighting is an awesome sight to see. All of down town SLC is a sight to see, i am so thankfull that the church took charge in revitalizing this area. The new mall should look great and be a huge boost to the economy.
What a waste of time, money and energy. Put that money and effort into actually helping people instead of selfish PR displays.
Didn't they have color film back in the day? Why the black and white?
Since most newspaper articles and picturs were published in B&W back in the day, I would think that's why they used B&W film.
One of our family traditions is to go downtown to eat dinner and walk over to see the lights. I love the feeling there, mainly because I'm with my family. The church spends tons of money on helping people year round who need help. What's wrong with them spending some money on helping people remember Christ during the Christmas season and feel good too? Besides, the lights at Temple Square help alot of business in downtown SLC. It's one of the few times I go downtown.
The LDS Church's humanitarian arm is HUGE. Sip some eggnog and relax. The lights on Temple Square are a huge benefit to the downtown economy drawing large crowds who eat and shop downtown.
I couldn't agree with the majority of the comments stated. I moved to SLC a few years ago and was amazed at the beauty found downtown during the holidays. I would like to personally thank the LDS Church for their display. I am not LDS, and have no desire to change my religion, but I certainly do feel that Temple Square is a special place.
Sums it up... awesome lights... traffic and parking was a nightmare! Will be better once the parking garage is back from the remodel across the street.
what's with all of the orange lights. There is nothing about orange that says Christmas.
I've got a simple, one word answer for you...TRAX.
Is it me or are the lights this year a little less than I remember them? It seemed that in years past, even the big trees had lights on them. Still fun activity for the family. Now if we could only convince the Cafe at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building to stay open till 9 or 10 on a Saturday night!
I agree. The lights on Temple Square used to be far more spectacular. They used to put lights on the big trees and it was indeed magical. Since they started putting lights on Main Street and the church plaza, Temple Square itself is not nearly as beautiful or magical as it used to be.
Is there any truth to the rumor that the reason most of the big trees on temple square were not lit this year is because the Church felt preasure to give in to the Man Made Global Warming people and cut back on electricity used for public Christmas displays this year?
Just wondering.
"The numbers of lights and visitors have grown dramatically from the 40,000 used in 1965."
What does it mean? 40,000 visitors, or lights and how were visitors used?
I live out of state and hadn't seen the lights on Temple Square for many years. But I always remembered them as being spectacular. When I finally got to go back and see them again last year, I was terribly disappointed. Although there were lights covering two blocks now, they just weren't as impressive as before. Quite frankly, the square itself is starting to look a bit tired and worn out (for lack of a better description).
Christmas is the one time of year our culture has a desire to seek the good in all mankind. Why waste your time on negative thoughts and comments about anyone or anything? Be positive and happy instead of looking for the negative, it's Christmas! Share that Christ-like quality instead of the opposite.
If you are disappointed with the light display on Temple square, maybe you are missing the big picture?
