Actually, ak47 should be starting. i don't think sloans plan of ak anchoring the second unit is a good choice, especially if sloan is going to start okur; if he really wants to keep cj in the starting lineup, start him at sg, and ak at sf, i won't mention how i feel about okur having a starting job.

Permanent

That was about all I needed to hear. A robot could run the Jazz better. Sloan needs to get that word out of his vocabulary. Why do you think the Jazz are so erratic. Sloan makes every thing permanent. Then the other coach actually plans for Jerry and the permanent Jazz. Maybe they should change their name to the "fossils".

Sloan needs to play both Mathews and CJ or whoever and then stay with who is playing well that night. Sloan can figure out BEFORE the game who should match up well (novel thought, Sloan might have to plan a game before it starts) instead of just putting his permanent line up out there.

When was the last time Sloan actually coached without being forced into it during a game (after he is down bad).

The Jazz are erratic because Sloan is permanent. That makes it very easy for Rookies like Rambis to out coach him. They have weeks to prepare to disrupt the Sloan system (which is pretty easy to do). They usually only have to make minor adjustments because the Sloan biases are so predictable and exploitable.

The Jazz are erratic because Jerry is Permanent.

Both

CJ and Mathews are erratic. The problem is Sloan. I agree with Jazz Cop to a degree. Sloan should start AK against some teams. He should play Mathews and CJ depending on how they match up and how they are playing.

If Sloan actually coached and used AK as a strategic weapon the Jazz would win a lot more.

There are coaches out there who would be challenging the West with this team. Sloan does not use his players well.

He is to worried about getting players playing time and his favorite combinations which tend to be less effective.

Sloan is just a really bad game coach. He does other things well but he does not exploit other teams weaknesses and he is surprised when they exploit his (even when that was the logical and obvious thing to do).

Sloan does not adjust. That has cost the Jazz a lot of games (at least 5 or more a year). This year he may have already lost 5 because of no workable game plan and because very slow changes during games.

Put in a real coach and shoot to the top of the West.

Jaz Cop

Miles is coming along, his shots are a product of the offense, if he plays good enough defense theres no reason to not start him. hes looking good, he has helped the jazz lately, athletically he usually has an advnatage, he looks like hes been pushing himself pretty hard, as long as he pushes himself he'll just get better.

Chico

Mathews should start based on his defense which anchors an offensive minded starting 5. Miles should play with the second unit which could use his offensive ability on a unit which struggles sometimes for a go to guy.

Korver should rehab his knee until after the Jazz loose in the first round of the playoffs due to lack of an inside defenseve presence (Lack of playing Fess)

jj

I think Sloan should start AK at least depending upon the opposing team. He really need to play more min if Jazz has to win more games.Coach meeds to change and adjust the line up according to the opposing team.

This had been set up and planned for months. This shows Jerry has not changed one iota. CJ is better needed off the bench as outside of Paul and Korver out you need some type of instant offense. Of course, Miles is celebrating tonight. What I predict will happen is this: CJ will get complacent again, cherry pick from the 3 point line and get back into lazy habits. I was laughing when reading this was predictable, as I TOLD ALL this would months ago.

A joke our leader is.....

Cross Training

Sloan has done a really good job of cross training. This team has extensive experience with AK and CJ playing at 3. It has also played well with Brewer and Mathews at 3/2.

It is not disruptive in the least to play combinations of those players at will on any given night for varying amounts of minutes. Getting the right match ups is a lot more important than who starts or set rotations.

When will Sloan ever play the best combinations instead of insisting on playing set rotations that do not match many teams.

All of those players have extensive experience coming off of the bench and playing well. Play the hot combos and players on any given night.

Play Mathews for defense and CJ for offense. Use the tools.

If Adleman coached this team they would challenge LA in wins and lead the NW.

If not Sloan, than who?

To Jazz Cop, Permanent and Both, if you were the Jazz GM, who would you replace Sloan with? Name (a) one person who is available now and (b) one person currently coaching another NBA team if he were available.

Tell me if you like any of these guys better:

(a) Lawrence Frank, Avery Johnson, Reggie Theus, Jeff Van Gundy, Doug Collins, Sam Mitchell, Maurice Cheeks, Lenny Wilkens, Terry Porter, Bill Laimbeer. Any names jumping out at you?

How about these guys:

(b) Kurt Rambis, Larry Brown, Mike D'Antoni, Stan Van Gundy, Eddie Jordan, Jay Triano, Vinny Del Negro, Mike Brown, Mike Dunleavy, George Karl, Rick Carlisle, Don Nelson. Like those guys better?

Unless you're going to tell me Phil Jackson, Greg Popovich, Doc Rivers or Rick Adelman, I just can't take you seriously. And even then, I'd take Sloan over Rivers or Adelman easily.

Re: Both

You can't get Jackson or Popovich, so which coach specifically are you going to get at Utah that would be better than Sloan?

akk

All Sloan talks about is toughness and defense. So what does he do? He starts Miles(the softest player we have) and sits Matthews who is his toughest defender. Why do we need to start Miles. We have Williams, Boozer, Okur who are all scorers in our startig line up along with Brewer who scores too. Meanwhile his three best defenders Kirlinko, Matthews, Fez sit. Not to mention Milsap who is a better defender than Boozer. Next time Sloan goes on a rant about defense and toughness I wish someone in the media would call him on that. If you want a tougher team... play your toughest players.

Doc

Sloan is a fake! He talks toughness & defense. Then he puts all the weakest softest offense only guys out on the floor. The best defenders sit or go to Orem!

FDR

AKK is absolutely right. I'd also play Koufos, because he is long, skilled, and will play hard all the time. Incredible that KK is sitting out. Sloan is destroying this kid before our eyes, just like he did to Almond. But I think KK will show them in the end that he is and always was the player they should use, but it may be on another team.

todd from santa ana

If not Sloan then WHo?

Clueless.....You obviously are on these boards for the 1st time....Many who you named far better, you wrote on the other post also. It will be fun showing you up//.

Miles

I really don't care who starts. What I care about is:

Jerry plays CJ enough 20 more minutes so he gets in a groove.

Jerry plays Matthews with CJ when Brewer is a liability on offense.

Jerry should start Matthews and CJ together and sit Brewer.

Jerry should think about Memo's role being reduced.

Jerry should play Maynor more minutes on the road and keep Dwill fresh.

Sloan

Todd is right, normally I agree with everything he says....There are many better than Jerry even coaching now....I further feel he is right about Avery having lived in Angelo, Texas...The Jazz would win at least the division if he was the coach. Laimbeer, Theus all would push this squad and make them accountable. More important teach them to play to capabilities or sit.

Risky

It is tough to start AK since the starting point guard freezes him out of the offense.

B.R.

Miles, good post, I agree with all your points and I'll add one:

Fes needs to play 10 to 20 minutes every game to keep him in the flow and to set the defensive tone down in the paint.

Jazz Cop

I say,
make tod from santa anaa the coach, if he doesn't accept,
E snow deserves a shot, Mark Jackson;
i think the players would have a hard time accepting another coach, even with all the mistakes that sloan makes that costs this team.

the point isn't that another coach could do a better job than sloan, the point is that sloan has been coaching in utah long enough that he should be doing a better job period. most of my issue w/ sloan has to do with his rotations and substitutions, my other issue is farm talk which isn't motivating to listen to, and his hypocritical nature to blame the players when he does nothing to prepare. but i've had a problem with his rotations for years and for me, i've seen enough.

Jazz Cop

Among the coaches you mentioned, i can't say id think anyone of them would do a better job than sloan, right off the cuff, but thats because most of the players have bought into sloans system, a new coach would take time to implement his system, and whether the players buy the philosophy or not would determine how succesfull that coach is.
