How nice that everyone respects Gays & Lesbians living in Utah all of a sudden. It seems rather suspicious after years and years of demonizing and marginalizing them at every possible, imaginable opportunity.
Just maybe, the reputation of the LDS Church and its members was hindering it's missionary work. It is almost as if someone had a "revelation"?
How nice and rather sad that it has taken this long, to figure out what most young people and compassionate adults have known for a long time.
I can't see the logic in this law. Why would we give someone practicing aberrant behavior, repulsive to the majority of the citizens in the county more protection than the average citizen?
All this will do is create more lawsuits against employers and landlords. Any employee fired or renter evicted for cause will be able to claim they are gay and they will have rights the majority of us will not have.
Our elected county officials are tripping over themselves to pass an unnecessary law so that they can be seen as compassionate and politically correct.
What happened to common sense? It wasn't that long ago that sodomy was against the law and those practicing it would be prosecuted. Now we give them more rights for their evil behavior? When did evil become good in SL County?
This is crazy. I hope there are enough good people left in SL County who will stand up for what is right and let their council person know they will vote them out of office if they pass this insane law.
This is needed.
SLC's own discrimination report in July '09 gives over 300 documented cases of discrimination alone.
Don't Ask, Don't Tell has discharged over 13,000 men & women because of who the date versus what they do.
David Bell & his partner were beaten in they're own home in South Salt Lake. When they were found not guilty of any wrongdoing by a jury (one jury actually said the case was a 'waste of resources') there have been NO CHARGES against his attackers by Distric Attorney Lohra Miller.
The attack was so bad Bell's partner needed 3 surgeries.
If you think this is still not needed I have a solution, tell people you are gay for two weeks and see if you can still keep your job or stay where you rent.
If you are afraid of lawsuites, perhaps you should stop discriminating.
Hate is not a family value.
The LDS Church hasn't changed their stance one bit. Nobody deserves to be discriminated against because they're gay. The Church shows kindness to everyone. Nevertheless, the LDS Church still doesn't condone homosexuality. It is still seen as immoral and a sexual abomination.
Since when did we need laws telling us who we can hire and who we can rent our properties to?
If I'm into lots of body piercings and lots of raucous parties, maybe I only want to hire people or rent to others who have lots of body piercings and enjoy raucous parties. However, if I'm not into lots of body piercings and lots of raucous parties, maybe I shouldn't be required to rent to those that are.
Similarly, if I want to only associate with other openly gay people, I should be able to hire and rent to such. But if I do not want to associate with openly gay people, should I be required to hire them and rent to them?
Laws that require us to associate with people that are not like us in their values are essentially unconstitutional. If you look at the establishment clause of the 1st amendment, these laws essentially establish a religion of certain values.
I see a mass exodus of businesses and families from Salt Lake County if these laws are passed.
'It is still seen as immoral and a sexual abomination.' - 9:18 a.m.
So is divorce and yet 50% of heterosexual marriages end in it.
Keep your morals to yourself. Nobody asked you to force them on others.
"they will have rights the majority of us will not have."
EVERYONE has a sexual orientation, so EVERYONE (including you) will be protected. No special rights, just equal protection as it was always meant to be.
I am so sorry to hear that you do not have a sexual orientation. I think you should know that makes you an extremely unique individual - perhaps you would be willing to be the object of scientific study?
Perhaps, if you were to read the proposal, or the SL ordinance it is based on, you would see the protections that are included to prevent the scenario envisioned in your second paragraph.
"What happened to common sense?" Well, common sense is not so common and your post indicates that you are one of many that lack it.
There are many polygamist families living in Salt Lake County who constantly face discrimination and mockery. Is the county going to do anything for them? Didn't think so. But it will sure go out of its way to appease an obnoxious group of people who choose to practice a particular behavior.
Morbidly obese people face discrimination and heartbreaking condemnation all the time for their chosen behavior. Any anti-bias proposals on the table for them? Probably not. Just more pandering to one outspoken group that chooses unhealthy, degenerate behavior.
You don't think that everything gays have been doing with their hateful protests and their pride parades and all that garbage is their way of forcing their lifestyle on the rest of us? It's more than just creating "awareness", that's for sure. At least a heterosexual marriage is a normal relationship, even if it does sour and end in divorce. A homosexual relationship has never been, and hopefully never will be, considered normal. Continue your "pagan" ways and see where it gets you in the end.
Homosexual activity is elective. It needs no protection. It deserves retribution!
One may have feelings, but to act on them is a choice!
"Why Now a Change of Heart?" continues the attitude homos use to abuse normal behavior persons.
One who chooses homosexual activity DOES NOT deserve elevation in society where they cause AIDS and antagonistic social behavior!!!
They are not in any way gay, but troubled souls whom I will never respect or give special treatment to.
Just saying from a California perspective...
Hey Salt Lake County,
Could you please force the Salt Lake County school districts to teach elementary students about homosexuality too? We wouldn't want to offend anyone who chooses to practice homosexuality by not indoctrinating our children about it.
Thanks,
Justin Sane
"Hate is not a family value."
Homosexuality is not a family value, either.
'You don't think that everything gays have been doing with their hateful protests and their pride parades and all that garbage is their way of forcing their lifestyle on the rest of us?' - 10:06 a.m.
Short answer: No.
No one FORCES you to go to Pride. No one FORCES you to watch the news. If these things are SO bad for you, why do you do them?
And where is your moral outrage about other sexual acts? Why aren't you protesting your local Hooters in Midvale?
Pick and choose much?
You call 'normal' marriage, divorce? The end of marriage?
Well done!
You can't even justify 'your' marriage yet you work to deny marriage to others.
Polygamy happens to be against the law. As with all who engage in illegal behavior, no - you don't get special protections for breaking the law.
Now, whether or not polygamy should be illegal is a totally different question.
If polygamy were ever to become legal, then yes - polygamists would be protected from discrimination.
Morbid obesity is considered a physical disability or handicap, and as such is protected. As, coincidentally, is religion.
'One who chooses homosexual activity DOES NOT deserve elevation in society where they cause AIDS...' - 10:08 a.m.
Really? Gays cause AIDS? When did you learn this, the 80's?
Many sexual partners contribute to any Sexually transmited disease.
You might as well say Mormons are the cause of cancer. Both are fiction.
If homosexuals will 'never' get your respect...
thank you.
You have just given reason why these protections need to pass.
Because you cannot be trusted to treat others witht the same amount of respect that you yourself demand.
And you don't speak for california. I don't know anyone who lives there that is as bigoted as you.
What ABOUT them?
Polygamist's, Obese...what about left-handers?
Really?
Your excuse to deny rights to homosexuals is that OTHER people are discriminated against?
How sad.
If your doing the whole 'what about the world' thing, guess what?
Homosexuals are part of the world too. They are human beings, just like you, who deserve the same protections you take for granted.
For example:
Can someone give me an example of being fired for being a heterosexual.
The max I have heard is 7 cases.
I can give you 13,000 for being a homosexual.
'Homosexuality is not a family value, either.' - 10:17 a.m.
Spoken like someone who tries to believe that no one is gay in your family.
Taking a line from - Parents of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG)
'Someone you know and love is gay.'
You gonna kick out your child because they are gay?
Try your grandfather.
How sad your life must be.
'Could you please force the Salt Lake County school districts to teach elementary students about homosexuality too?' - 10:11 a.m.
Why not? The only thing children learn about homosexuals now is that they are 'bad'. What about 'seminary' classes that are RIGHT. NEXT. DOOR. to most schools? Seperated by a 4ft tall fence. (How effective)
But really Justin most people in Utah are only taught 'abstinence only' classes, which have been shown to fail. (Sarah Palins daughter was pregnant out of wedlock)
So I guess, before we can teach kids about homosexuals, we have to teach them about heterosexuality first! :)
No wonder people here are so ignorant.
