Good Pilot

Did the right thing. Hopefully he'll be ok. As far as people staring and slowing down, that's what we do. We find that everything else in our lives is more interesting.

Does anyone know what caused the Bonanza to land? Paying attention to the landing item it appears that the pilot either had an engine failure or he ran out of gas. This particular Bonanza looks like a BE 34 which has a smaller engine and flies slower than the 35's or 36's. I spent numerous years teaching students to fly and hauling items for Air Utah and Thompson flying service and delivering items that people paid us to do so and we never ran out of fuel while I was there.

Good luck to the pilot.

Folks, if you're going to comment on a news story, please comment ON THE NEWS STORY! Instead of throwing out insults and complaining about how you were incovenienced on your drive home, maybe we should be a little tactful and sympathetic. Obviously we don't know yet what forced the emergency landing, but if anyone is reading this that knows the pilot, please thank him for risking greater injury to himself by ensuring that he didn't hit anyone on the ground. Trust me folks, you would've been alot more "incovenienced" had the pilot not done such a good job avoiding you on the freeway. You might have had the opportunity to join him in the ambulance ride. Think about that when you're sitting at home this Christmas instead of in a hospital.
I hope the pilot is able to recover, and can be with his family for Christmas.

I made an error, that is, calling the wrecked Bonanza a BE 34 when I should have called it a BE 33. Another item should also be made to find out how many total flight hours the pilot has and how many of those hours were in a BE 33? Also, what was the weather like when the Bonanza landed? Someone let us know.

Right outside my window

There weather was fine yesterday around 2:00pm when it crashed. It was just cold. I wonder if he got too much ice on his wings.

Problems flying

My wife had gone outside our house in Lehi about that time and told me she saw a plane flying low and making strange noises, like engine trouble. She said the crash makes sense after hearing the noise she did. He must have been trying to limp to an airport, he would have had a much easier and safer time trying to land it on Lehi State Street (he was flying nearly parallel with it) before going down a mile further up the road.

I work right next to the crash site. A couple of my colegues saw the plane impact. The prop was not turning. He came in at about a 15 - 20 degree angle - much steeper than one would on a gliding approach. It appears to me that he was diving to put the plane down on the off ramp or in the weeds between the ramp and the freeway. We may never know why he chose that spot but if he had any altitude at all there are a lot of open fields and untravelled, wide roads throughout the Thanksgiving point area that he could have headed for. Anyway, I hope he recovers. Weather was crystal clear, surface winds light and variable. They just finished clearing the plane from the site.

I just hope that the pilot turns out to be ok I have a bad feeling that it was an old friends father :( either way my prayers are with him and his family in this hard time god bless him for trying to keep others safe !

Tierney, if that old friend is Kait Thorn, Lad THorn, or Wes Thorn, then you would be correct.

I hope & Pray Mark Thorn will be ok. He was the owner of Desert Management Group. I am one of his clients. I don't know what is going on there and I can't get ahold of anyone. Heard the family was cleaning out the offic and people are out of work. I hope they contact his clients. He would want them to treat them right, I'm sure. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it very much!

The Thorn family has already been through a lot and this will be a tremendous burdon on them. I am a former associate of Mr. Thorn and am no longer in touch with him or his fmaily. I am concerned for all. I pray for Mark, for Lori and the children, and for the physicians and nurses that are caring for Mark. I can't imagine the pain this family must be experienceing. Whateve your opinion of what happened or why this is a tragedy, and my heart aches for the Thorn family.

Ry

Mark is badly injured but we still have hope. They're moving him to a clinic that specializes in brain damages..

I am an investor with Desert Management Group as well. My prayers are with Mark and his family. I know this is an extremly difficult time for them. I would like to help the family out by fielding questions other investors might have right now. I invested in property in Detroit and have gone ahead and filed the quit claim deed Mark gave me and a property transfer affidavit. If you have any questions about what to do about your investment you can contact me (949) 510-6755 or Michael at (714) 381-4653

Christina

Leila, have you every called the assessors office in UT and gave them your homes address to see if the home is indeed in your name like Mark said it would be? My husband and I sent a transfer affidavit signed to Mark also on our property in UT and he said it would be in our companies name. My husband called the assessors office in UT only to find out months after we sent him that paperwork the house is still in desert managements name.

Shelley

I drove by and seen Mark's plane on my way from Bakersfield, CA to Salt Lake City and have wondered how he is doing? I missed my turnoff for Cabellas and had to go well past and return on the freeway where his plane had landed.

I hope someone can let me know...

Mark is still in the hospital but from what ladd says he is improving . He still is in and out.

George from Seattle
