Not bad for a Freshman!
Best win of any Utah team so far. Excellent job BYU!
Emery & Haws WOW!
Kind of makes up for last season's heartbreaking last second loss.
Could this be the year to finally get past the horrid "one and done" jinx of the past 20 years??
He scored that many because he hardly passed the ball. JT had a good game, he passed inside and out and let his shots come to him. Jimmer is the new JT. I am continually shocked at what Rose is will allow his players to do!
Sorry your wrong, Utes beat a then ranked Illinois team a week ago. Best win in conference would be UNLV beating Louisville. Anyways, good game for the Cougs.
The Utes are young and inconsistent but BYU, UNLV and New Mexico are starting strong. Hopefully the MWC can make a statement in basketball like they have in football.
Y is going to dominate the conference for a long time coming. And finally do some ncaa damage. Sorry utah, enjoy that close game against Idaho State because that's as good as it gets for yew.
Bradley beat Illinois. Louisville got smashed by 20 points. This win is right up there with both of those.
Also, Jimmer and JT combined for 10 assists today.
Freshman Tyler Haws had 17 points and 11 rebounds! BYU is set for years to come.
Congrats Cougars. Sounds like the team is starting to find itself offensively. It's nice when your two leading scorers have off-nights that rest of the team contributes so well. Keep it going!!
I'm a HUGE BYU fan. Nice win. But I'm saving all of the overconfident comments until we can win a game in the NCAA Tournament. These are all nice wins but in the end, if you don't advance, that is where all the trash talk comes from...deservedly so.
So, GO COUGS. But let's not be talking any trash at all until the big dance goes past the first punch of the ticket.
Here's to a great MWC season from UNLV, UNM, Utah and of course...BYU!
The Cougars had better hope that someone else steps up when JT and Fredette have bad games.
It's clear that the ASU game plan was to shut down the big guns (after watching the USU game, most teams will game plan that way) and make the other guys beat you.
In this case, Haws and Emery made the difference.
badly BYU will beat Utah this season.
I get what you are trying to say but big wins now translate to higher seeding for the tourney and the lack of seeding is what is hurting us come March. So good win Cougs! Keep it up!
Please Mr. Rayburn, write the way it actually happened....."the preseason player of the year" was forcing his shots......not an off night shooting!!!
JT is open season for the media and fans but "never"
write anything negative about JF!! The TV announcer referred to one of JT's shots as "awful",
but when JF forced shots, he just said "contributing
in so many other ways"...and JF could not stay with Arizona state's point guard so other people had to guard him.....Morgan and Lloyd need more PT and Coach Rose needs to send a message to JF by benching him when he is "gunning"
It was a solid win. Really need to see the inside guys get more touches and be more involved. I thought Miles started off pretty hot, but they totally ignored him in the 2nd half. The best way to stop big runs is to have guys that can finish down low.
This is a terrific win, against the PAC-10 to boot. As a life-long BYU Fan and BYU Alumni, I'm excited for this team. They need to prove they can win, on the road, against quality teams. If they can do that, my hope for the NCAA tournament will be high.
On that note, I'm holding my collective breath. BYU's had good teams before and lost in the first round of the Big Dance. Let's hope this year is different.
Keep it up Cougs!!!
Great win Cougs! Great statement that you have several players who can score! Very impressive to beat a good defensive team.
RE: NCAA is what counts. YOU need to enjoy the moment or else you'll never enjoy the season. That really is one of the lamest comments after a win I've ever heard. Because of that you are not a "HUGE" BYU fan but a ute poster. At least when you post behind a moniker, BE HONEST! I bet for christmas you're like, "Wow, I really love christmas, but until Santa brings me what I want, this season is lame."
Jeff is absolutely correct...this team has moved beyond JT. Davies is the future along with Haws and Emory. Fredette is beginning to act like JT as well. Jimmer needs to settle down and "dish" the assists out. everyone is keying on Fredette. JT is a non-factor now. JT is a senior and has not changed his wild shot mentality. byu might as well put me on the court and shoot untimely and unruly shots. we all love JT on the 3 pointers but we have haws and emory and even jimmer as well as Abouo #1. Haws leaves for a mission this coming spring. we will miss him.
BYU has struggled in the NCAA tourney as a lower or 8/9 seed; however, the Cougars have only lost once in the tournament as a higher seed. Getting a 5th to 7th seed in the tournament would be a huge step forward for BYU and give the Cougars an excellent chance of beating that one-and-done jinx.
btw, an 8th seed is not considered a higher seed than a 9th seed; it's basically a toss-up game with the 8th seed getting to wear their home jerseys.
That was a good win but good teams should win at home. I would not get caried away it was a nice win but should be expected at home. To me it was no different than Utah St beating BYU at home. Good teams should take care of business at home. I really like what I see out of Haws, Davies and Hartsock. Please play them all more and keep bringing JT of the bench. JT did have the best pass of the game with his half court bounce pass for a layin. I will be more convinced with a road win over Fresno St this Saturday. And Yes UNLV looks like the team to beat this year they look strong.
