Most people don't want to admit much less agree with this. Many children (under 21) these days are 'porn ready' because they've seen so much on the internet and are deep into it. It's mainstream .... but porn is utterly and wholly destructive. Anyone who believes otherwise isn't thinking or is in denial.

I have seen this in several lives and can only say, 'yes, that is obvious.' It will literally rewire the brain through the chemistry involved. There are few substances so addictive or so completely ignored for its danger.

A 'First Amendment Right' you say? Please. If I endorse that I also will have to endorse experimental suicide and genocide. It is the same.

I hope this study didn't cost much! It's just common sense that this is the case!

Sorry, anything released locally by the Sutherland institute instantly looses any real credibility. They are notorius for speaking half-truths and skewing facts to push their agenda. While I know the study was not done by them, it was done by a similar institution that can just as easily pick and choose what "facts" to use to prove their agenda.

That being said, porn is bad, but not always.

Ex adict

Take it from someone who knows. It destory you and those around you.

name

This is only true for those who believe in and want to stay/function in the current status quo of our "society". My partner and I (female and male couple) enjoy viewing "pornography" together often. BTW, this was written by the female half of the couple!

FeedTheRightWolf

I must agree with Ex adict it has nearly ruined my life. BTW to the lady who watches pornography with her husband. Good luck. I hope things will work out for you guys but you are playing with fire.

A few....

years ago, I accompany a friend of mine who is a profiler in law enforcement on a job tour of a maximum security prison facility and it was interesting to me that almost all of the inmates said that they were addicted to pornography.

I'm not sayng that that was the start of their problems later on in their lives but I just thought that it was interesting that almost all of them said that.

Ex addict also

It is pure evil. Having been addicted most of my life I can say I am happier now that I have been away from it for 4 years now. It did nearly ruin my life too. It, like other addictions, makes you think only about you and satisifying your "habit". It makes you think of women as only objects and that you can leave your wife for someone better. I am positive that many of the stalkers out there who stalk female celebritys are addicted to pornography.
You people who say there is nothing wrong with it; try doing without it for a month and see what you say then. ANYTHING that is addicting like that is wrong. (No food is not addicting it is necessary)

Adiction normal.

For anyone not to think about and crave sex is abnormal. This study is nothing but a bunch of doo-doo. It's when people don't get sex or access to it that harms society.

At the onset of puberty, the time sex becomes a reality, our minds are constantly thinking about procreation and the other sex. The biggest problem is learning to control this normal desire. Pornography doesn't create addicts or sexually dysfunctional humans, it's our own discrimination against it that creates closet desires for sex. Only those that fear their human desires call it pornography.

America is the only country that bears this discrimination and addiction to calling sex an evil in being human. This American addiction to sex discrimination has driven this human need to an underground society calling it pornography. I feel sorry for anyone who believes this article has any merit.

My doctor says sex is good for the heart and mind. It's a fabulous stress reliever, which is more dangerous for the heart, as it relaxes the whole body and mind. Anyone who has had pure unadulterated and emotional sex knows this and it is real.

it's not the pornography

This is like saying guns kill people. No, it's people who kill people. The victorian attitudes surrounding pornography are what causes the damage. When one partner objects to it, then it becomes a problem (and yes...I believe that partner has the right to object and the other person should respect their wishes). What happens to two willing adults in the bedroom is their business alone. My wife and I both enjoy and view erotic videos from time to time. It puts spice in our marriage and brings us closer...not the other way around.

Utah is top in the nation for porn subscriptions and there's a reason for that. When you mystify something and surround it with guilt and shame, it becomes MORE alluring, not less. It's the attitudes surrounding porn that cause the destruction.

I started out viewing porn as evil and I spent too much time viewing it. When I changed my views and saw myself as something less than "evil" the guilt and shame disappeared along with the need to view it too often.

THEeyepatch

Should be outlawed PERIOD! It serves no purpose to the community, only self gratification. Then again, it makes billions of dollars a year, creates millionaires out of people that probably aren't smart enough to work fast food (that remark was in general) not that there aren't some college grads in the porn business. Somebody needs to fix the books. In the end it's about money, and money makes the world go around.

personal

I used to have very liberal views on porn. I believed it was okay until it nearly destroyed my life. It was fun and enjoyable but I did not recognize what it was doing to my family. I have had to quit and it has been a very painful ordeal. I don't need to have doctors and psychologists tell me it is damaging. I found that out on my own.
The study does bother me somewhat. It sounds like the study was more of an opinion that it was based on fact. Either the reporting of details was poor or the study was not all inclusive.
Now that I have been away from porn for 6 months I am able to focus better and my life is better. However, I still crave my fix.

Internet

Unfortunately good things come from evil sometimes. The truth is that porn built the internet into what it is today. The good speeds and access have come about because of porn. It might have come about eventually but porn hastened the development.

Alternative, healthy views about

This study reads to me as claiming that erotica challenges the traditional family model -- which is in miniature a replica of the State (a coercive monopoly that discourages competition and exit).

People comparing open relationships to the traditional model are going to make difference choices. Defenders of the traditional, some would say exploitative, model are naturally going to move to censor positive, enticing portrayals of other models (such as polyamory, etc.).

In a free society, people get to choose what kind of relationships they wish to form and conclude.

re: it's not the pornography

You wrote, "When I changed my views and saw myself as something less than "evil" the guilt and shame disappeared along with the need to view it too often."

Agreed. When we remove recognition of right and wrong, good and evil, for anything, the shame and guilt go away. However, if we choose to ignore what we know is right and choose to do what is wrong, that doesn't make wrong right (or neutral) and we still have to suffer the negative consequences of choosing wrong.

Rocky

Those who play will pay. Human dignity with all of its complex emotions will eventually suffer. People are like flowers, the more it's touched--the more its soul withers away. It may not be now, but someone will be hurt at another time. I'm a school teacher and I have seen countless times when children suffer because of a permissive parent. Porn does nothing to uplift society. It destroys.

Ted Bundy

I remember recording the final interview with Ted Bundy just prior to his execution. His actions came down to one word in the interview...Pornography

He attributed his behavior to his addiction to pornography, wanting to turn the fantasy into reality. Every female he looked upon he would fantasize until he began acting out. Thus becoming one of the worst serial killers in the country

Pornography is a dark imitation of what a special relationship should be between a husband and wife.

The fact that you choose to ignore what the research says doesn't make it wrong.

Pornography is a counterfeit. Counterfeit money looks like real money, but has no real honest value. Pornography looks like love, but also has no real or honest value.

Those who use a counterfeit approach to try to get the things they crave may find short term satisfaction, but will find long term disappointment.

You're slipping a little off topic. The topic here is "Addiction to PORNOGRAPHY" not "Adiction to Sex".

Obviously we are adicted to sex... or there wouldn't be so many of us around.

I think sexual attraction was built into our circitry intentionally, to encourage us to leave our parents and pair up and keep the species going.

But what THIS ARTICLE is saying is... That adiction to "pornography" (in other words... ABNORMAL sex) had detrimental affects on individuals and the family and on society.

NORMAL sexual attraction is a completely different story and is obviously an important part of the human condition.

Ha

While I don't necessarily approve of pornography, I have to say that the arguments against it that are posted here are quite poor. And let's stop mentioning the case of Ted Bundy as proof that pornography leads to crimes. If a teenage video game enthusiast shoots up his school, is that proof that playing video games will make you a killer too? No, the evidence would be considered weak. Judging by this article, I would say that this pornography study's evidence is also weak.
