Of course neither

one of them have all the answers. However, they both bring up some really good points and various items to really think about. Glenn is just pointing out the everyday flaws and blunders regarding current politicians and knuckleheads in our society today. How we ever solve that problem is beyond Glenn or anybody else for that matter.

John Pack Lambert

I think both Beck and Skousen are overbearing extremists.
Their radicalism leads to extremism, not to the moderation in all things that we are counseled to seek.
We need more intelectual inquiry and less smugness of knowing all the answers at the beganing.

B.

The guy ringing the fire bell usually doesn't have the answers. He just knows the house is on fire and we need to do something about it.

Aaron W.

Moderation in all things? Does that mean we should be moderate politically? Expand on "intelectual inquiry" what does that mean?

Throwing stuff out

It is exactly on point, just throw out ideas on intuition - prove them later. Beck and many pundints through out all kinds of rhetoric without proof and try to cherry pick evidence that support thier theories. If I has a dollar for every time Rush or Beck told us what liberals want to "really" do. They say they are saving the economy but they are REALLY...

Global warming is bunk, I don't have any proof..... but it is.... Oh wait 2 email out of millions between scientists prove without a doubt I was right all along.

That's really dishonesty at it's most basic form. Deception.

Jacob Lee

I don't think Beck or Skousen ever even claimed to be the spokesmen for all conservative LDS members. Silly article and silly professors wasting their wind.

We're not clones

I agree, John. And Aaron, it means know what you're talking about before you open your mouth and say that you do.

Jacob, they may not say it, but it's what they've become. I don't think Skousen wanted it, but it makes Beck's stance stronger if people think it's true. Don't be so naive.

embarassed_conservative

Skousen and Beck? What an utter embarassment! THe fact that we have a panel discussing this is indicative of how shallow and silly LDS conservatism has become. Conservatism (as represented by a Beck) is antithetical to any serious good faith citizenship or thought. I guess it's worthy of study and critique (if I was a political scientist) but still sad when I think of the state of LDS culture and politics.

People today are either too die hard fanatic left or too die hard fanatic right wing. The divide isn't healthy for our country.

RE: We're not clones

....."know what you are talking about before you open your mouth"!! In other words, we shouldn't offer our opinions without absolute proof? Isn't that exactly what these professors are doing, simply offering their opinions? So why is it alright for them, but not for Beck and/or Skousen? Oh that's right, I forgot. Since they are college professors, they are TRUE intellectuals! We shouldn't question their opinions.

Beck fan

I certainly don't hang on every word of Glenn Beck's like I do Pres. Monson, but for heavens sake he does a good job of stimulating conversation and getting people of their duffs. Glenn Beck is a good example of what Pres. Hinckley described as "Standing for Something".

They are extremist in nature. They spew divisions and hatred among many others on the right wing media. Our country is getting sicker the more we have these right wing extremists at the mic.

Michigan opinion

Most conservative "commentators" seem to thrive on fear and hate. Fear and hate are tools that take us further from truth. But they do sell ads.

Sean W.

Those are some great arguments against Beck and Skousen. People who resort to branding them as extremists, radicals, not intellectual, or individuals who "spew divisions and hatred" have shown just how weak their own positions are. Educated arguments do not have to rely on name calling.

Verl Thomas

Why don't the professors rise up and do something that will make a difference rather than criticizing those who are trying.

LD

It appears that many of these posts (and some of those being quoted in the article) are from those who have not listened to Glenn Beck enough to hear (or follow) what he is saying. Or perhaps, they are among those with views he is warning us about.

I feel many of our citizens have their heads in the sand and would rather feel “all is well” than to feel the heat of the truth, and the danger that we are faced with in our nation at this time.

I believe many of our government officials know very well where things are headed and they are not being deceived. That is the danger! I believe they know perfectly well where they are taking us.

Bottom line: We will get what we deserve as a nation!

Digbads

Anyone who thinks Glenn Beck is all about Fear and hate have not watched enough of his show.

GoodyTwoShoes

Hey Michigan---Last time I checked, all of the (global warming) fear and hatred (for all conservative thought) was coming from the left. Just sayin'.

To the point, read the writings of John Locke (Second Treatise of Civil Government) and William Blackstone's (Commentaries On The Laws of England, specifically the first two chapters)and the following book on "The Principles of Natural Law" edited by Langkilde and can be found on Amazon. After that you should have an understanding of what they are talking about.

In an Hour?

Beck only has time to bring up the points and provoke thought. You want research and intellectual thought? Look it up yourself! Beck tells his audience essentially the same thing. If all you do is believe him without doing the research, you aren't very smart. He has a one hour show, and all he can do is point out the issues and what he thinks the problem is. You can't settle these problems in an hour, this isn't a TV show. That's the trouble with America, they have the attention span of an hour, because TV programs last an hour or less. BYU profs have the luxury of taking their time, researching every jot and tittle until they can pronouce all is done. Believe me, it takes much more than an hour to get the answers you seek.
