These are such profound revelations from the man with the biggest ego in golf.
I love how he compares himself to Bobby Jones and Ben Hogan...
He is the worst commentator in all of sports - Bill Walton gives him a good run for the money but I would have to give it to Miller.
Stay classy Dick and stay true to your school.
To Miller .... at 11:08.
It is not perfectly clear from the article (although the book itself would settle it conclusively), but it appears that Harmon spoke of Jones, Hogan, and Miller in the same sentence. I doubt that Miller himself did that. He knows that he is not in that class.
What did he ever do to you bring that out? Assume good intentions (instead of bad ones) and life will go down better.
This is the first time I have ever responded to a blog or an newspaper article. I feel I like I have to defend Johnny Miller's honor, a man I don't even personally know.
I think Harmon's article is very insightful and his inclusion of Johnny Miller's comments are very timely. Johnny Miller and his family, have been wonderful examples of how an American Family can deal with huge success. Always the gentleman and the professional on and off the screen, Mr. Miller is "one" of the very finest television analysts on the stage today.
I am offended by Bloggers who feel like they have to tear down anyone who has been successful. In the end, these "bloggers" are the ones who are such little people...
I look forward to more insightful articles from Mr. Harmon and more golf reporting by Johnny Miller.
Despite what you think about Johnny Miller as a person, it seems like his predictions and speculations about Tiger have been fairly accurate.
I found this article interesting
"Tiger's wife Elin will either stand humiliated behind her man and father of her two children, or she'll end this foursome."
As far as has been reported, Elin did nothing wrong. Why should she be humiliated? Tiger transgressed. Tiger should be humiliated. Elin did not break the bond of trust, Tiger did. Whether Elin decides to stay with Tiger or not is a personal decision, but she should not be humiliated is so doing. Should they choose to stay together, Tiger will have to work to rebuild trust within the relationship. Elin is not respondible for Tiger's unwise decisions, she should not be humiliated with whatever decision she makes.
I don't even want to know and it is none of my business, but in considering your article and speculation, Harmon, were Hogan, Jones or ,heaven forbid, Miller faithful in their marital committments?
Harmon uses Miller to subtly attack Woods on the moral plane. He falls weakly into the media trap of tearing down a world icon, with or without convincing evidence, but fails to consider the fallibility of the other icons to whom he compares Tiger Woods.
Foremost, it is none of our business what happens behind Woods' closed doors. It really is none of our business what he does on the course, except as third party entertainment.
We, the voyeuring public, place our icons on pedestals, foist our expectations upon them, and then delight in their failure to meet those unwarranted expectations. I don't excuse Tiger's indescretions. But they are, afterall, his indescretions, not ours. Or maybe they are ours, and it is easier to point our collective finger at him rather than at ourselves.
So, Dick harmon and Johnny Miller, what gaffes in your lives have gone unnoticed which you'd rather keep hidden??
I hope your appraisal of Johnny Miller is accurate. I hope it, because I want to, not because it is accurate. And if Miller is ever shown to be imperfect, will you be the first to express your disdain?
Maybe the old adage should have been, "If you can't something nice, mind your own business."
By your fawning over Harmon's praise of Miller, you are tacitly joing the bloggers you deplore.
Isn't it interesting that Tiger is the most recognized athlete in the world, playing a sport that requires absolute honesty and integrity on the course. He is his own referee on the golf course, yet in his personal life, he has been less than honest to the person who required it the most.
If this was a one-time act, perhaps Elin could forgive, but this went on for 2 years, perhaps with multiple women. Elin has every right to feel humiliated. She did nothing wrong, but it's natural to feel that way when someone has been dishonest to your face. Best of luck Cheetah!
I agree with the first post, Miller humors me more than anything with his ego BUT you have to hand it to him. It will be VERY interesting to see if Tiger can move forward with the same focus and gusto that has defined him and revived the entire golf world.
As to Elin being humiliated I agree with "Wrong," she is not humiliated or at least she shouldn't be. There is NO WAY you can look at her and say Tiger is missing something? And if you can your wife must be much hotter than mine:)
I'm not sure why this is hard to understand, but Harmon is not saying Elin would be humiliated because she did anything wrong. She would be humiliated because people whose spouses cheat usually do feel so when their dirty laundry is aired for all to see.
johnny miller won eight times in 1974.He set a new earnings record that year. He won the U S open with an open closing record of 63. he is the best golf commentator ever.
There are no secrets on tour. Miller knew what Tiger was like back when he wrote this book. He knew how difficult it would be for him to stay faithful to a new wife...and what the consequences would be he didn't.
And this does hurt golf. It is a sport that is based on integrity and honesty. How can you not now ask did Tiger use drugs to get a physical advantage? Did he use them to get back on track after a long night of fun? Did he pay people to be in the gallery to stand at strategic miss points to block arrant shots from going deeper into the rough? Or to improve lies while no one was looking? Or to replace a lost ball?
If he has no morals in one area of his life then that's a pretty clear indication he doesn't have them in other areas as well.
This is a sad day for the great game of golf. Tiger has hurt more than just himself and his family. Truly Jack will remain the greatest of all time because none of this befell him...regardless of the major titles count.
Okay so Miller has a little ego, do you know any one who was really good that didn't have an ego? Miller is one of my favorite announcers! He is very accurate on the air time and time again.
I have to agree with 12 handicappers take. I think he is one of the best announcers in all of sports. Who else gives you the insite that he gives and is right most of the time? Another thing, who else shoot a 62 in the final round of the US Open?
It's both illogical and inaccurate to say that a lack of integrity in one area of your life (marital fidelity) means you lack integrity in all aspects of your life (golf). By that line of thinking, those who disobey the law and break the speed limit are lawless in all aspects of their lives. Those who exaggerate a story (fish tail) are dishonest in all aspects of their lives.
I feel great pain for Elin. She is hurt and the image she had of their posterboard family has been shattered. We'll see if Tiger is the phenom we all made him out to be. If he can rebuild his family and remain atop the golf world, he'll have earned my respect. As of now, he's in the same group as Kobe Bryant, Steve McNair, etc. His iconic image is severly soiled. I'm sad for him.
All humans are not perfect even those of you who make it sound like you are. I have nothing to do with Tiger or Johnny but I enjoy what they do and respect them for that. As for me I have never heard Tiger say that he is perfect or any thing close to that. He did something wrong as he said. As for me I hope that he and Elin can work it out and she can be a bigger human then some of these comments and national comments and forgive him and they can work on a better life for themselves. Golf and Tiger is just entertainment and I thank him for that and hope he learns from his mistakes as I have and hopefully all of you have. Nobody but Tiger, Elin and the family have been hurt by this. For those that think you are hurt by this, get over it and walk in your own shoes.
I can't believe I took the time to read this article about a sad transgression. I don't feel any better about the situation. I don't feel better about my own life for having read it.
Why are we humans like vultures circling on anyone that we deem vulnerable ready to dive in and start ripping the "media meat" off their carcasses at the first sign of "media death."
Shame on us all.
Tour Secrets - you nailed it. Your value system is not what you tell the public or what your are selling or what your image is. Your value system is what you do when we're not watching! When only YOU know what your actions are. We only know a fraction of who Tiger really is, and what we know so far is not good. Praise the game, praise the perfromance, never praise the man. These celebrity/athletes are not who you think they are. Is it possible that now we can question Tiger's use of performance enhancing substances, or other "trangressions"? Yes
Nice article. Can I read a book from a few years back then write an article about what that author thought about a certain celebrity? And as for all you who are so quick to condem Tiger for being unfaithful- besides it not being any of your business, it isn't like the pasttime of golf hasn't had it's fair share of womanizers, drinkers and ne'er do wellers.
I think you have taken this way too far. What people do on their own time should be their own business. It is the fan that puts them up so high. If you think Tiger is only golfer to cheat on his wife, you're up in the night. It happens in all professional sports, throughout the entertainment industry and politicians.
I get that you're disapointed - nobody likes to hear this kind of stuff about someone who was an idol to many - but we should all look a little closer to who we choose to idolize.
Oh and I agree with the first post - Miller is annoying. I'm not attacking him as a person - but the ways he calls the game, you would think that he was the one with all the records - huge ego.
So now choosing to keep your family together in the face of adultery is humiliating? I'm sure she would be embarrassed by having her dirty laundry aired in public, but to say she would live forever in the background as a humiliated wife should she choose to save her marriage seems a little over the top. I would think she would be proud if she was able to make things work out.
