you thought they would at least do something...
What is that something???
What???
Lee, pray about it, get the revelation, because I can't think of a thing the University could do to Max that he already hasn't done to himself.
Get off the kid. Today is Wednesday. Let it go.....
Get over it! Lee: Why do you or any Utah fan care what Hall said? By bringing it up over and over we are showing him what he wants.
Stop already. We know BYU and Hall beat us his senior year. Good for him.
Who cares about BYU being tough with their rules etc. Please Lee Benson, stop with the babyish self-pitty. We don't need an apology. This isn't 3rd grade football.
MOVE ON!
Utah Fan
I think the embarrassment is punishment enough for Max Hall. It's a wise administrator that realizes the point where further punishment would cause more anger and negative feelings. When a child does something wrong, a good parent can at times simply say, "I'm disappointed in you," and the lesson is well enough learned. Hall has more than caught the drift that people are disappointed.
Oh, and I'm not sure if it ever was, but caffeine isn't against the Honor Code.
Bronco really missed a "teaching opportunity" here. When O'Neill Chambers made some innocuous comments about his talent at the beginning of fall camp a year ago, Bronco spoke publicly and called it a "program failure". Well, Max's comments were equally (if not more so) a "program failure"--only this time, Bronco is nowhere to be found.
Think of the good Bronco could have done in constructively talking about Max's comments (clarifying them and putting them in the proper context), expressing his respect for Kyle Whittingham and the Ute program and University (think of the healthy relationship of Edwards and McBride), describing how the rivalry is good for college sports, and then asking for more moderation and sportsmanship from the fans. Such comments could have gone a long way in mending the divide, but Bronco chose rather to say nothing...puzzling for someone who is adamant that the BYU program should stand for something.
Like Lee Benson, I'm quite surprised and disappointed that BYU has done absolutely nothing. And I'm a BYU fan and Bronco supporter...
Max Hall's frustration was well founded and understandable. His comments have been so overblown, it is quite ridiculous.
Morgan Scally, Steve Tate, Paul Kruger, and Sylvester Stephenson all can "Hate BYU" and that gets a pass.
Such hypocrisy. Such double standards.
I am disgusted with the feigned "shock" from Ute fans.
I guess that a football player's post-game comments are the big news in Utah. Is life in Utah so boring that this will still be reported, commented on and talked about for the next 12 months? Move on.
Way to rat out your buddy Lee. They've been looking for years for the guy that left that can of Coke in the toilet tank!
really, you expect an athlete from BYU to account for his actions and actually be reprimanded by the powers that be? actually, is an athlete from any where accountable for any bad behaviour? athletes are demigods in America and they know it. please give due respect.
Make him do what? You mean, like apologize?
If you attended BYU, you should know that not only do they adhere strictly to the rules, but they keep everything they do very private. If they did punish Hall, they're not going to tell anyone. Is that a surprise ?
I doubt very much that they are ignoring Hall's spew of hatred! I am quite sure that Hall has received an ear full of comments from the coach and from the university leaders. Likely, they are trying to let the whole stupid thing die down. It was an immature comment made in a very public setting. Just like Hall should have let the actions and comments of a few immature fans go, everyone needs to let Hall's comments go! Grow up everyone.
You'd think that in the wake of such a circus that someone, ANYONE, would ask the Univeristy of Utah if they are actually going to change anything at RES when it comes to next years "holy war" as the media (your ilk, Lee) calls it. You'd think that after the continued reports of BYU family (not the run of the mill BYU fan stepping into the rival stadium) members being treated so poorly by UteFan, that they'd take a serious look at their own practices and policies to see if THEY could make some improvement to the rivalry (*PLEASE* spare me the "we don't sell beer, so it must not be true" line).
I recall several years ago that BYU grandma fan got knocked over at the Thomas and Mack center in LV during the MWC BB tournament and, if memory serves, UNLV actually beefed up security so grandma could go see a game without being accosted by obnoxious fan. Maybe the U of U could make a similar review to see if they actually make a difference in the outcome of the off-field expience. If not, the Max is right - UofU is classless.
I recently graduated from BYU and I have to say that your impression and experience is almost completely opposed to mine. I never once dealt with the honor code office or knew anyone who did. During my 4 years there, the honor code was something that I lived by, but its enforcement was somehow much more abstract and removed to the background. Most students just live their lives and work hard to get good grades. I resent your description of the university as a oppressive place where the rules are somehow always menacing over the heads of the students.
Also, BYU simply can't win here. If it does sanction Hall for what he said, you and others will criticize it for not allowing free speech (and BYU's oppressive reputation will only grow in the minds of the ignorant). However, because they haven't been sanction, the school is somehow allowing a double standard by not regulating every thought and action of one of its notable students.
People who don't get it will NEVER be satisfied with what the school does - so they should do and will do as they deem best.
Maybe they are chilling. BYU has a bad reputation of interferring in every aspect of students' lives. They need some leeway to make decisions. Like coach Whittingham who had no comment, I believe Mendenhall just wants this to fade away. It's after all a fairly non issue when compared with other things happening in the country.
The media loves this stuff. Milking it for all they can. You keep it going and going until someone else says something, or worse, actually does something bad. People are taking this "hate" thing to new levels of foolishness...the media does cause it sells newspapers...the Utah fans do cause it gives them something to focus their anger and despair on after the Utes lost again to BYU in a close one.
The words Hall said were just as bad as me telling my brother "I am going to beat you within an inch of your life if you don't give me the remote control back". It doesn't mean I actually will...and it doesn't mean Hall really hates all of Utah. The funny thing is all the people out there that think they know Hall's mind. The truth of the matter is that what happens on the football field in this rivalry is much worse than some words...'cause ACTIONS are taking place out there. You recall all the personal fouls being called? All the fights? Punches thrown? That stuff is worse than someone saying a few words. Words are meaningless these days.
This is the first Lee Benson article I've read, (I'm new here,) but, I'll be ignoring Lee Benson from now on. I'm not a Y fan, I'm not a Hall fan. I am a fan of freedom of speech. A journalist should understand that. Hall was reprimanded by the conference, Why is Lee Benson putting pressure on The Y to make a bad situation worse?
Don't touch the GOLDEN BOY! Here is your free pass. Class act that Max Hall. lol
I'm not even sure what the point of this article is. Nutshell version of the article seems to be -- "BYU should have done something about Max spewing yewt hatred but didn't."
Maybe they did do something but didn't publicize it hence, you don't know about it. Ya know? Maybe they considered the "apology' to be sufficient. Or maybe they really didn't care to do anything since it was all said in the heat of the moment and an apology came the next morning.
What? is BYU supposed to be speech police now every time a student uses the word "hate" in describing something/someone they hate having to do with sports? Good luck with that.
That's rich -- a newspaper article wondering why someone's (Max's) First Amendment rights weren't abrogated.
Kind of refreshing isn't it, Lee.
Max Hall's only mistake was hating the sinner instead of the sin. He rectified that mistake in his public apology and therefore wasn't reprimanded by BYU.
Yes, he should have avoided his J. Golden Kimball-esque language and instead used language that was more Spencer W. Kimball-esque ("hate the sin, not the sinner"), but experienced BYU fans understand the origin of Max's hatred. The entire UofU community that Max condemned does little, if anything, to suppress the classless behavior that Max's family and many BYU fans suffer when we attend BYU games in RES. Maybe we should wear blue ponchos and earplugs next time so the spraying beer and endless barrage of profanity won't bother us.
