Soooo, apparently BYU's offense didn't do anything to win this game. It was all the defense? Really, Harmon, if you want to give credit to the BYU D (which you are 100% right that they deserve a lot of credit), then you should at least acknowledge that the BYU offense got it done when they needed to. I sincerely think you are peeved about Hall's postgame quotes and wanted to take credit from him and his final play and put it elsewhere. While the Cougar D was brilliant this game, it wasn't the ONLY reason that BYU won. You mentioned the offensive highlights at the beginning of your article as a negative thing instead of the positive things they were. Hall, despite his passionate remarks at the end of the game, was a big reason we won this game...along with Unga.
Number 2 play on Sportcenter Top Ten baby! Did you hear the anchor call the game the "Holy war?"
The game changed when Wynn got rocked by Pendleton! 6-6 passing before the hit and 15-35 after that. Good game, poor sportsmanship by the players during and after the game. Maybe this rivalry has gotten a little out of hand. Hopefully no women or children were truly hit!
You're right Dick, all those wide open Utah receivers not catching overthrown passes is because BYU's defense was so good.
I totally agree. Much of the fourth quarter I felt the BYU offense was playing for overtime with a two touchdown lead. Every conceivable bad play call they could have made, they did. Credit the defense totally with this one. Without them, there would have been no chance for overtime or a game winning touchdown pass. That said, few recent BYU quarterbacks can brag of a 2 for 3 victory record over Utah.
defense. And Max Hall is right. They are classless. And if a ute cries then they are hypocrites. We hate your school, you hate ours, get over it. Stop with your "holier than thou" attitude. Well said Max! Send them home!
If we credit the Coug defense then who do we debit? Because you can't credit one thing without debiting another.
isn't the best QB we've had, but I LOVED what he said. Utes are classless. I don't care if they get bent out of shape over what he said, its true. Let them cry.
I saw poor offensive play-calling on both sides (BYU not managing clock or having a 2nd half game plan...and Utah pulling their QB everytime he got into a rhythm). Poor officiating (footage NEVER showed Unga on the ground with ball in hand. Most certainly weren't definitive grounds to return the ball to BYU (after a 20 min. review), BYU punt returner obviously purposely initiating contact with Utah cover man, Utah's Reed smacking Jorgensen, either a Utah fumble or an illegal tackle by BYU (tackling by grasping the inside of a helmet, also see picture at right on this screen)...instead a dead ball was called, and about 4 missed pass interference calls on both sides.
But the worst; listening to Todd Christiansen announce the game.
The refs made some interesting calls too.
Ever considered that perhaps your quarterback over-threw his receivers deep on seven occasions in part to the overall coverage/rushing/pressure/blitzing scheme that the Y came in with? Hmmmm, just a thought.
"In fairness, part of it was BYU luck in facing a Ute freshman QB."
Naaa you think?
Part of it was when the freshman QB overthrow one open receiver after another down field. Part of it was that Shaky was allowed to pass bounce passes to receivers more then Cain.
Utah has struggled all year on offense.
For any and all poor sportsmanship demonstrated by BYU fans, I apologize. I am humiliated to think of even the possibility of abuse of the opposing coach's family.
Please, BYU, Utah fans, our coaches and teams have put national caliber football on the map, but we will never be a truly national competitor as long as we tolerate fan behavior that clearly labels us as hicksville.
Yes, my festering rivalistic attitude toward Utah defies logic and is the domain of pure emotion, but we must be better human beings. On both sides.
Max was right, Ausrin was right!
Thank you Max Hall for saying what we all could not! You spoke the truth. I had that experience with Utah fans yesterday. Drunken and foul mouthed. When asked to please tone it down I was told where I could stick it along with hand gestures.
Thank you Utah fans for proving Max Hall to be right. If you don't like his comments do something about it..... Maybe be nice for starters, be respectful second and oh... leave your booze home.
You are so right, BYU's defense was so good that they stayed step for step with the U's receivers. Come on, the U receivers beat the Y corners all game long, Wynn was just off tonight. Also, claiming that Whit's wife was allegedly hit and mistreated is terrible. Y fans in that section substaniate Mrs. Whit's story, admit it, there are also "classless" Y fans. As for Max's comments, I am not offended but disappointed. I feel bad for Max that he carries so much hate, if he doesn't learn to deal with those issues better he will have a long miserable life.
Look, did you watch the game? BYU's D put more pressure on wynn than they have all year. He had to hurry those throws. The D played great. Wynn hit those guys in all his other games, so why not yesterday? Scared. that's why.
If Harmon's comments about someone hitting Kyle's wife and son are true then I am extremely disappointed and ashamed of my own fan base. There is no excuse for that under any circumstances and I wish the pathetic BYU fans that did it were caught thrown in jail. I don't care if Yewt fans do that to us (don't tell me that doesn't happen because I've been sucker punched myself at a rivalry game in SLC), there's no excuse for this behavior in return. If I saw a BYU fan do this to a Yewt fan at LES I would get security immediately and report them. I have family members who are yewt fans (there are black sheep in every family) and they frequently comment about how much better they are treated at LES than I am at Rice-Eccles. I'd hate to see BYU fans change that. These actions, if true, are inexcusable in every way, not to mention a felony.
To "Dick Harmon" @ 12:50 am:
Reference the comment just before yours. Yes, the Cougar defense IS to credit for the overthrows, etc., from Wynn. The Cougars ARE "so good" that they went after him with a vengeance, got to him repeatedly and had him hearing footsteps. He was just trying to get rid of the ball before he got rocked again (and again and again).
The Utes got burned badly on the last play when they went for the interception. You take chances when sometimes you shouldn't. It's sort of payback for last year when Hall took chances trying to force plays and the Utes came up with interceptions. Thank you, Max, for the great play and for telling the truth about the Utes afterwards. They always invent stories about BYU fans to rationalize the conduct of their own fans.
