This is definitely a worthy cause, but a foolish way to go about shedding light on the tragedy of starvation. Corruption in their government needs to be rooted out. There is enough food in the world to feed us all, but it's corruption that starves their people. Wouldn't it be more effective to keep yourself healthy and strong so you can find ways to effectively fight corruption? Starving yourself will be a flash in the pan. Then what? Take your zeal and find a more effective way, good woman. The world needs you healthy and strong.
I understand her desire to spread the word and make a difference, but I agree, This is a foolish way to help the people of Kenya. I think you should go door to door with photos and literature and have donations given to the bank of your choice. I myself would donate. I know the need is there. But, to run yourself down and to damage your own body for the sake of others is not the correct way to go about this. When you are on an airplane with a child and you need to use your mask for oxygen they always tell you before the flight to administer it to yourself before you help the child, since you need to help both of you. This is the same principle. Do not be foolish. There are many other ways to go about helping the people of Kenya. Hurting your own body in the end will do nothing to bring help to these people. Action with a cause will and there are so many other things you could do to help.
Like in all honesty her starving herself is going to get govt officials in a different country to pay attention. What does having no food have in relation to the fact they have no food or water themselves? That is ridiculous! I agree, keep your strength to fight for them, do your cause in a more constructive way and write letters, voice your thoughts out loud! Get food into the country, but drawing attention to yourself to be your point in what you are supposedly protesting? C'mon!
having lived in Kenya and East Africa I somewhat know what I am writing about. Corruption corruption corruption - each new government electee promises change and the change is the money goes into their pockets instead of the one they replaced. Danial Arao Moi was a crook - but the West did little to say no to him - new leaders the same. Look at Zimbabwe and we still have relations with them, South Africa falling apart since Mandela has gotten old. The Kingston Trio said it in a song "There rioting in Africa" and it goes on and no. What does our State Dept do - take a safari to Africa for a fact finding visit, stay in lovely hotels, eat soecial food and don't go off the paved roads. I was in Nairobi when the man for all sasons Jesse jackson arrived 0 driven around in Prudence Bushnells our Ambassadors car saw the sights of Nairobi, but not the slums etc and gave praise to Moi - what a joke of a man. Sorry America wake up to what is going on in Africa.
What a waste. I'm an American living and working with the rural poor in Western Kenya right now and I can't see how an American staving makes any difference for Kenyans who really don't have food. Want to help? Take the money you would have spent on an obscene amount of food this Thanksgiving and give it to a charity thats feeding people in Kenya. I'm all for creating awareness about the famine here, but honestly, an American girl trying to experience what its like to starve is a slap in the face for Kenyans who really have nothing. I can only the imagine the look of disgust on my Kenyan friends' faces if I told them about this article.
I don't know what's more sad, the fact that she's starving herself for a cause or that it actually gets people to pay attention to the problem. YES, it does make a difference. Kudos for that. She got news coverage on an issue she believes in. On another note. The LDS church is using LED's to light temple square(another article). lol
yourself how can you save others? Another starving person won't help the Kenyan people. They need the strength and vitality of a young American woman who can fight for them! Feeling guilty for our abundance doesn't change their plight. Be healthy, Be strong, and keep fighting.
Not the smartest way to do something for a good cause, But starving yourself Get Real, of get a life, And the point is What?
Her commitment to her cause is commendable; however, I think her tactics are foolish. I believe she could be much more effective with her cause by channeling her efforts in other ways. Her starving herself does not motivate me to want to donate more for this cause.
I thought Anonymous@3:49 made some good points about how Kenyans who have no choice about starving might perceive her actions.
"Worthy Cause" @10:14 said it best: "Take your zeal and find a more effective way, good woman. The world needs you healthy and strong."
You don't wear shorts in Kenya unless you're a tourist. If she wants to help and understand the Kenyan people she should be living and dressing like them too. Eating ugali doesn't magically make you Kenya's godsend. And it gets you no closer to solving the country's problems.
Word to the wise Holly: behaving and dressing like a tourist will encourage people to treat you like one. You'll never get anywhere that way. Just some friendly advice.
Please tell me what is quiet about starving yourself then going to the press to publicize your suffering?
Eat a calorie-loaded meal and get to work for your cause.
The President recently used Kenya as an example. In that it is now a food exporting African nation.
Kenya single-handedly, merely bring awareness to a rich and obese group of people. She's doing her part, and living her convictions.
Naive though she may be, I support Holly.
Fast for the Navajo Indians-- the Apaches and the many other Native Americans that go hungry every day-- Fast for the children of the unemployed and under employed in the United States that go to bed hungry daily..
Kenya has corruption and we have greed-- can anyone define the difference???
Geez guys! She is trying to gain awareness and all you can do is cut her down?! What have you done for someone else today? Have you gone out of your way to help someone you don't know?
I think we could all take a lesson from this girl. Sure, we have a lot of issues closer to home, so let's take care of those AND those further away. One comment was about not spending as much on our selves...that is a great idea. The greed and gluttony in America is almost nauseating. I have spent time, and am currently, in Iraq. Most Americans have no idea how good they have it. Please, do something to help the less fortunate.
What is this girl thinking. I can tell you that no one outside a few LDS missionaries even know that the Deseret News or a small town in Utah even exists Get real woman want to make a difference in a third world country go there do something for the poor there better still to something for the poor and needy in your community.
Nearly all of your comments support exactly what Holly Sue is trying to bring awareness to... America as a whole is a greedy nation and unwilling to face the needs of anyone not up in their face.
"I would donate if you came door to door..."? There is a link in the article -- why not donate now? You're aware of it now.
And to those of you who encouraged Holly to "do something for the cause" - perhaps if you looked at the pictures accompanying the article, you would see the picture of Holly Sue in Kenya, last week, helping to relieve their suffering.
Wake up people! There is no time like the present to stop making excuses, and start doing something for someone other than yourself!
I know this girl, and her family. All they DO is fight for Kenya and its people. They are constantly going into Kenya, building dams to conserve water for crops, building a feeding center for starving children...Holly is not doing this for pity or guilt. She is issuing a wake-up call to all of us who take so much for granted. I am proud of her family's efforts and how much REAL change they are producing in Kenya.
Kudos to her for doing something besides sitting around thinking about helping the Kenyans, but starving herself, then going off to a country riddled with diseases like malaria is NOT a smart way to go about it. There are many things she could do to bring attention to her cause that don't involve putting herself in physical danger.
