no money to pay their fees but money to hire attorneies and file law suits. Morgan County has been conned and intimidated. Morgan County is not Salt Lake and things are spread out a lot more. Lets pray for a snow storm their motives are in deep question
I caught that as well, they can't afford the cost of extra law enforcement but they can afford the attorney. Now us Morgan tax payers will foot the bill so they can stage a protest that I don't agree with. It sounds like Morgan caved to their demands to avoid the hassle.
Did we read the same article? I didn't see where it was even insinuated that they had no money for the fees. In fact, the insinuation is that Morgan County was willing to pay for the fees.
Yes, their motives are in deep question b/c they want to end animal abuse. Hmm, what could their true motive be? Please inform us Anonymous. Sounds more like you and Chris have an ulterior motive: disagree w/ all things you perceive as liberal, despite the fact that your arguments make no sense.
Let's all save up for real fur coats. They are made from renewable resources and not faux fur made from irreplaceable oil reserves. I'm especially fond of coyote coats. If more people bought coyote, the value would increase, and hunters would have reason to eliminate a greater percentage of these predators, which keep deer populations depressed.
Obviously "Anon" doesn't know what the word "indigent" means. It means that they don't have money to pay for the trouble that they cause--which is why Morgan County has to pick up their fees.
I'm glad to see that America is still America, and the 1st Amendment stands. I support the protesters' right to voice their opinions peacefully and lawfully. Shame on those who would trash the constitution to protect animal abusers.
I think the concern has always been that the protester's will not be peaceful and lawful.
I would be fair and say, that I think the mink farmers could cause trouble as well.
That is why there has to be a police force at the protest.
These protest groups are known to sneak onto private property and release mink.
protesting is allowed breaking the law is not
Their narrow minded thinking only results in the starvation, and death of the mink anyway.
Kind of like PETA that saves animals from labs, and then puts them in a freezer to die.
I would like to see the mink farmers go out of business, because of no demand for the furs.
Furs are a vain and selfish clothing, it is cruel to raise animals for the sole purpose of their skins.
Actually it did say in the article the group couldn't afford to pay the $400, but yet hired a lawyer. If fur wasn't a popular item there would be no need to raise mink. Since they continue to be raised means the demand must still be there. I agree with the person who pointed out real fur is sustainable, but faux fur is a petroleum by-product. Lastly, since the mink are alive and well on the farms, but die when set free by activists, should tell you they are not 'abused' on the farms. Leave the farmers alone to conduct their legal businesses.
Have any of you ever heard the term pro bono? Some lawyers will cover the costs themselves when they find something to be overreaching and unethical. I find it funny how scared Morgan county is of a couple of animal rights activists. Maybe their consciences are getting to them.
I applaud this animal group for standing up to the intimidation tactics and attempts at silencing their voice on behalf of animals. I wish that we all had the fortitude to do so when our rights are being squashed. Good job!
Also, there is no reason that this group should have to foot the $400. bill. The City Council recognized this and withdrew its initial request.
No one has commented on this statement in the article
'could picket a residence if it was the "targeted occupant's sole place of business."'
I find this very disturbing regardless of whether you agree with fur farms or not. Should someone be able to "protest" at your house for any reason they desire? How would you feel if someone was blowing off sirens and flashing lights in your windows at 3 in the morning, or worse yet your neighbors homes because of you? If it's ok to do it for animal rights is it because I didn't like the color of your shoes? This goes way over the line.
Morgan should have to pay the animal group's attorney's fees because they passed an unconstitutional ordinance that would not have been stricken but for the animal group's challenge. A county can't just violate the constitution and expect someone else to pay to challenge it--or not. You don't get to violate the constitution and avoid the consequences for doing so. That's just silly. Elect councilpeople who do a little research before trampling on this nation's most sacred document.
As for fearing the protesters' motives, I hardly think a protest in broad daylight under police surveillance is a logical place for activists to engage in illegal acts. And I have yet to hear a convincing argument as to why advocating for kindness to animals isn't a worthy cause--even if you disagree with it.
I'm amazed to find out about the lives these animal rights people live.
They travel around, looking for a cause to contend.
They play the "good-guy" role, as if their cause is the single most important issue on the planet.
Then next week, they'll be picketing for something like, not enough hot dog buns in a package.
Do they picket the cow and pig slaughter houses?
When they make fur coats illegal, then mink farms should be illegal as well.
But until then.......get a life people!!!!!!
It's probably a 1983 civil rights suit. It's the private attorney general model. We want people to be able to sue the government if the government violates their civil rights or refuses to enforce their civil rights. Very peole could could actually afford to hire a lawyer to bring such a suit, so in 1976 Congress passed a law that allows a federal court to award reasonable attorney fees to the winning party in certain civil rights suits. So basically, if the attorney bringing the suit wins, they get paid. If they don't win, the attorney would be SOL.
Another animal terrorist group wants to use blackmail; stop your business or we will harass you. Looking at websites of these groups, the protests are not peaceful lets discuss the issues. These are intimating and threatening visits. This is a dangerous precedent to set. Can someone harass a private citizen because they don't like their religion? Their color? Their ethnicity? You have the right to terrorize someone? — what countries do that sound like? What next — burning stuff in the lawn? The animal rights terrorist are only concerned with own rights - not the families they are threatening. Our rights come with responsibility - and if you don't practice - and if you don't practice your freedeoms responsibly, then they are curtailed. Ultimately, I feel sorry that the citizens of Morgan County that are paying taxes for their own people to be blackmailed.
I can't wait to see all the fur farmers. Maybe I won't wait until Saturday.
100 years ago their were no animal rights people because most people grew up on a farm. Maybe when America starts starving again they will realize how this religion is false.
Fur is murder, & it is disgusting!! It is far from environmentally friendly too, with all the water, feces, etc. I hope all the fur farms and fur stores close, everywhere!! Good for ALL of you for speaking out for those who cannot speak for themselves.
Just remember where your little buddy is, who is sitting in JAIL, ask him how fun he is having, especially looking at 2 to 5 years, he went to see the mink too! Mink ranching is LEGAL, Terrorism and releasing mink isn't !!
Do yourself a favor go Getalife.
just because something is legal doesn't make it morally right and vice versa
