GREAT JOB REAL SALT LAKE. THIS TEAM PLAYS SO HARD.
Though I am not a huge soccer fan, I appreciate the level of overall athletic prowess and internal fortuideness (toughness) it takes to play the game.
Not a sport? For those of you that feel that way, wake up! You don't have to like the game, but please don't be ignorant know it all (the rest of the world is wrong) Utahns.
Soccer is decided on the field of battle with lady luck involved therein. That's no different than baseball, hockey, and even football and basketball. Where not talking figure skating and curling here at all. These soccer players are a man's man.
Figure skating is an athletic art form that I find entertaining if in the right mood. However, judges decide the outcome. Curling is not something I enjoy, but why bash it. Because it's labeled a sport. So what! I love golf, and it's always under attack from those claiming it's not a sport.
Why can't we all just appreciate certain physical achievements and competitions without trying to decide which ones are worthy of being called a sport?
I hate soccer but good job Real. Great for SLC!!!
Incredible postseason! What a story! MLS Champions! I'm still ecstatic over this thing! Long live Real Salt Lake!
I am a supporter, not a hater but if this is the best team in the MLS, how did they finish sub-.500? Was there a lack of effort all year long?
RSL really struggled in May & June due to poor play, several injuries, and call ups to national team play. RSL was actually considered one of the favorites to win it in the preseason. They turned it around the last few months of the season. I basically had written off their chances in August, but they fought til the end.
There's tremendous parity in the MLS, during the regular season there aren't that many real upsets. And the American "playoff" system doesn't work for soccer. That's why no other league really does it that way. Even the world cup plays a mini group season for teams to prove themselves before the elimination portion. But, seriously, the MLS playoff is like having a baseball playoff but playing single games, no series. Anyway, the major point is that what SLC did (snuck into the playoffs and won it) is VERY rare, and won't happen very often. They busted the BSC, sort of.
I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO happy for these guys, and for EVERYONE!!! SOOOOOOOO sweet! Just think if we repeat!! hahaha
I used to hate soccer. I'm a baseball, football fan through and through, but a couple of years living in South America really put Soccer into perspective for me, you just have to understand it to really enjoy it. I have never gotten as excited watching a baseball game as I do watching a soccer game. Anyway, I love RSL, they are an awesome team, and we fans won't accept an under 500 year next year, and would love a repeat too!!!!! Also, GO USA in the World Cup! (not expecting them to win it, but a good, healthy run would be really nice!!!!
So Real Salt Lake has only been in existence for 5 years? How is it that they can win a championship in such a short amount of time yet the Utah Jazz have only been in Utah for how many years? Oh and they still haven't won a championship! Now is it time for Sloan to go????? Just wondering and Wonderful Job to RSL!!! Your team is the epitome of EXCELLENCE!
This measure really doesn't apply to soccer because it ignores ties which are GOOD results. The season is measured in points, not percentages. RSL finished with 40 points, exactly as many points as last year, which was also good enough for them to advance to the playoffs at that time.
The reason they were under .500 was because they played 30 games and 8 of 15 teams can qualify for the play-offs. These two stats combined lead to a high percent chance of a sub .500 team making it. Sub .500 however does not mean the team is bad, but rather they didn't win 50% of their games. It does not include draws and the like. Hopefully once the league gets up to 20 teams, the system will work better.
Realize this. They were sub .500 when they entered the playoffs (not that it matters) but after the final game they played this year they were 15-12-7. They did not win the title as a sub .500 team.
It represents few ties on the road and some losses at home. It was a miracle they made it into the playoffs and I am glad with the result but I hate the playoff system in the MLS.
Hey, no mention of County Mayor Corroon. Do you think he's a big Real fan?
Why is everyone moaning about RSL finishing sub-.500 for the season and the bizarre playoff format for MLS??? Who cares? The system is what it is, and RSL advanced through the system and won the Cup. End of story. Let's enjoy this championship that came legitimately and stop crying about all the useless nonsense that is now irrelevant. If MLS says RSL is their champion, then RSL is the MLS champion - end of story.
Way to go RSL! Let's make it back-to-back championships!
Thank you for your soccer testimony and conversion story. How much exactly is Dave Checketts paying you to blog for him?
Soccer will remain boring to me no matter who likes it, so fake stories like yours only serve to make american soccer's image even more fragile and pathetic to me than it already is.
Incorrect--RSL had the best home record in the league (9-1-5) with only one home loss. They were poor on the road, until the playoffs.
Great Job RSL!!!! I love the team, and the run they had leading up to the playoffs and through the post season was tremendous! That team was so confident they could play and win. They deserve it! Congratulations!!
I wish I could have been there at Rio Tinto Stadium to celebrate with everyone. Congratulations once again Real Salt Lake on a fantastic run! Truly phenomenal. I can't wait to cheer RSL on when they are here in DC to play against DC United next year.
Great honor and excitement for Utah, Take a hint Jazz, go thou and do likewise!
