Since the pit was stip mined I it avoided much of the contamination of other areas of mining in Utah, such as cyanide leaching.

I am at a loss to explain why the public is required to clean up mines when the company, or one taking over it's assets is still in business.

This story is horrible. There's no detailing of the "remediation" or the lack thereof. There's also no detailing of the extent of contamination of the entire aquifer or other hazards in the area. Where's the history? This entire piece is merely a few quotes from city officials and residents, heavy on the officials side. Have they done there job? Are things better or worse than they were 5 years ago? Would it have been better to designate it as a Superfund site? What hazards are still present? How long will it take to clean up? Why did you bother to write this story in the first place?
