"unfair act to deceive the opponent"???
so all those misdirection, full-back passes, hook and ladders, last second line shifts, etc. etc. are now illegal if they deceive the opponent???
The unfair act to deceive is only according to this ref. I always thought the offense was supposed to exploit the defense' weakness. Not according this this ref, you have to telegraph to the defense what the offense is doing to keep the game fair. What a croc of a call. That ref needs to go back to ref school and learn the way the rule book is supposed to be applied.
John Beck did not hold the record for career passing yards. That record is held by Ty Detmer. Hall overtook Beck's record to becoming 2nd in career passing yards.
Deception? How unfair! What a joke of a call.
How about the no-call on Pitta on the first drive? Unbelievable! Incidental, please......
I did not think that game was called both ways. Still, I wasn't thrilled to see Max melt down with three straight turnovers.
I've never heard the BYU crowd boo the officials so strongly. Even after the next play or two, the crowd returned to booing them for the call. I went home, went through the rule book, and only found references to other types of deceptive plays.
I heard that a bulletin had gone out from the NCAA just weeks ago to the officials to start penalizing this form of deception, but had not been passed on to the coaches. Could this be true?
Jan Jorgensen's 50 consecutive starts must be a BYU record. Is it?
Can you hear it? The I am roll-in OUT of Provo party train because I am off to make it in the big city lights and bring in the Big Money TRAIN...{ WHAT? you think you are the Cuba Gooding character in Jerry Maguire Movie ? Show Me The MONEY !! }Dude, Harvey um think about this point before you believe the entourage, all teenagers think they are ready for all of life's challenges because in there immature prospective they believe that they are all grown up...Like the teenager who looks at his body and says's " Hey I look like and adult, so I guess I am an Adult, nothing is farther from the truth...Life experience, Colleg diploma and the school of hard knocks, these are the hammer & anvil of life...So remember that you stand on the shoulders of giants that have come before you, and not the PARTY TRAIN ENTOURAGE HOMIES !!!! Take the time to grow up...Love you Man.
My high school team ran a similar play in the 80s. Penalized for deception? Looks like AFA's playbook is out the window.
He was referencing Beck's "MWC" record for passing yards, not the BYU record.
The intent to deceive penalty may be the worst penalty call I've ever seen. I thought the whole idea for the offense was to deceive the defense.
It was fun to see the team having so much fun though.
The penalty "unfair deception" would also apply to a defensive player calling out offensive signals, i.e., saying, "hut" in order to deceive the offensive line.
The ruling is to differentiate misdirection, fake handoffs, screens, defensive and offensive scheme sets from weenie, little league, idiotic plays like the one BYU was penalized for, designed by wanna-be strategists as opposed to genuine innovations like the wishbone in its day, the spread offense nowadays, the West Coast offense, or the Doug Scovill/BYU innovations of the 1970's.
Those who complain about the penalty fall under the same heading: wanna-be football minds.
Be tough or be smart, but don't be weenie.
He will melt like a snowman on 11/28. Three total picks, (two six picks). Max just can't win big games. Utah prevails 28 - 16.
Harvey Unga is the "real deal" and will do well in the NFL.
Harvey runs for 67 yards on 11 carries, says his ankle fells better than last week. Why does he not get 20+ touches per game? Why does BYU continue to insit on throwing the ball 40-50 times a game putting continual pressure on the passing game and risking interceptions against the top takeaway team in the country.
I'm glad they won. Glad the defense and offense played well, but, sorry to say, if I'm Utah, I'd be licking my chops knowing the BYU just refuses to run the ball.
Hall passed John Beck for No. 2 in career yards passing with 11,039, 18 more than Beck, his predecessor. He has no chance at catching Detmer's school record (15,031).
I couldn't agree more with strange. My buddies and I couldn't believe how they kept throwing the ball when we were up so much. I mean it was ridiculous.
My friend says "i think we are trying to keep passing it so much so Utah thinks we aren't going to run next week and thats all we are going to do". Yeah right. Robert Anae is not smart enought to let the best running back in the history of BYU win games for him. He lets Max through int after int when we are up big. Great.
Look closer, and you will see it is MWC record for career passing yards. Ty Detmer never played in the MWC, because it didn't exist! Ty Detmer held the WAC passing record, until Colt Brenen broke that. Max Hall does hold the current MWC career yards passing record.
Pay close attention to details!
The only QB experiencing melt down in LES on Saturday will be winless!
Max and company will treat the Utes to a repeat of the way BYU played against Air Force, Wyoming, and UNLV!!!
can't belive it. This article TOTALLY prves that byu IS a tradition like no other, why can't other people see that?
good job unga,hall,jorgansen...
RE: Mellt down Max- Does Max Hall's performance over Oklahoma count for anything in winning the big game?
He drove the team down for the game winner and "led" them well. I believe he will do the same this game. He seems to overcome past mistakes.
