Fascination with end of days linked to bad times

Utah culture fosters a strong, paranoid imminent doom philosophy; it is usually just below the surface. It is often most aptly demonstrated by the people and outfits that make a buck off of it. I remember before Y2K the tubs of freeze dried potatoes and generators going off the shelves; it'll happen again before 2012. Sure, we need to prepare. But for winter storms or earthquakes, not religious apocalypse. This just keeps us afraid, and fear keeps us compliant.

The end is nearing as been a great sells pitch since the dawn of creation. It sells dry food and ammo today.

I believe it was the entire US and other countries that freaked out about Y2K. I remember most of the information regarding such on the US news, not just Utah.
