Yes, Matheson is acting cowardly... and... he is still a republican.
Jim Matheson's mind is already made up on most issues, and he doesn't give a hoot about what his constituents think . . . unless, of course, his constituents happen to be Republican.
Matheson is hardly conservative. He scored 36 for the American Conservative Union Ratings for 2008. Rob Bishop got 100 and Bennett got 64. Bennett is now the 8th most liberal republican US senator based on those numbers. Where does that leave Matheson?
These "Telephone Town Hall Meetings" are a joke. Only the pre-selected get to speak. You would be better off just calling his office in Washington, if you want to be heard.
as someone who is navigating political waters and playing games in Washington to stay in the business of politics, time for Matheson to stay home.
Would it be too much to ask for both types of meetings?
Phone Town Halls are just a way for him to sound like he is listening. (I agree with Stewart, to a point, do you really think a call to DC will be better??) You can set and listen to him answer screened questions- he gives his answer and that is then the finale word. Then on to the next question- which is another screened topic/ question. There is no exchange going on here- Nice try Jim. I understand the "talking to hundreds at a time" thing. But unless you open yourself up to haveing a conversation this is pointless to us "little folks". I asked a question on a call, but had no voice after that, then he gives his rehearsed answer, sounds all nice and smart. End of "exchange". Can you say : Out of touch? Sort of like a child/ parent relationship rather than what our founders had in mind.
