It's about time the fed gets smart and goes directly to the source of all this support for hiring illegals just so they can pay low wages. It's long over due and time to rid the country of these illegals so the younger generation can find jobs that will help these young people pay there own way while attending college etc.

About time. I truly feel for these people that come here for a better life. I just wish they would do it legally. I was just recently rejected for a gun purchase. When I went down to the BCI office in Taylorsville, I was told my name,ss#, And three different sets of finger prints showed up in criminal checks. None of this criminal activity is mine. My identity was stolen/used by someone else. Think this is no big deal....Let it happen to you, And try to get it cleared up yourself.
Three months later I am still nowhere. I pretty much have to prove that I am not any of the three people that showed up in the check.

ICE needs to make sure if there are that many illegal workers after their investigation and with unemployment high that they are all deported immediately

16 million unemployed Americans.
8 million illegal immigrants working/living here. Over 1 million legal immigrants arriving each year.
65,000 H-1B (high tech) visas in 2010.
Massive outsourcing of American jobs.

I wonder how the goverment is going to solve the high unemployment rate that is forecast for the next decade. Anybody got any obvious ideas?

I think it's about time ICE looked into these companies that have been profiting from their dishonest ways as this is indeed the root of the problem. However, I think that the illegal immigrants who work for these businesses ought to be deported instead of protected. They shouldn't get away with it either.

I think that when companies are found guilty of hiring illegal immigrants that news ought to be made public. If I were to rob a bank my name would be in the media. If companies cheat, their names should be out there too.

So what gets done?

So ICE finds violators, what do they do about the illegals there? Give them a get of jail free card? Targeting employers is long over due and Utah legislators and elected officials are still harboring them in their cities for body counts in tax funds. Maybe we need to change the way tax funds are distributed and how bodies are counted.

Along with ICE, the IRS should be acting in a joint investigation and recover some of the money from tax evasion by employers and the illegals working there. A slap on the wrist penalty only encourages the actions of these employers to stay illegal. The IRS approves too easily these fraudulent and stolen ID's. If the IRS would get more involved it would save a lot of americans from ID theft.

There is a potential trillion dollar loss to america because of the tax fraud committed by business that employ illegals. Neither the business or illegals pay "any" taxes on their tax free incomes, and because illegals don't exist they all qualify for all subsidized living costs, including a home or apartment they get for $50 a month. A jobless american must pay %700/mo.

Thomas J.

Nice start on a serious problem. Now, if ICE really wants to help the average legal citizen, go to the construction employers and audit them, That is where you will find most of the illegals. It is also where you will find most of the crime and drugs; I see it every day.

Whats New

If ICE goes out to Day Break/Rio Tinto or Wendover or Little America, they can shut these places down tomorrow. This hiring of aliens has been going on for years. But there is a trade off here, you may create some jobs but prices for services will go up.

Way to go

If ICE continues this method of enforcement all the illegals will find themselves unemployed and go elsewhere for work.

Nice ICE - Proper focus

Businesses doing the illegal hiring are the proper focus of immigration enforcement. The swift raids ended with all kinds of messy family situations -- kids dropped off a day care and never picked up, bread winners carted off and the family left with no options but welfare. It was a mess.

Take away the incentive to come to the country illegally and the illegal immigration problem goes away. In addition, it is much more humane to burden businesses than individuals.

Janet

Let's say I'm 19, have been living in the U.S. for 15 years, and do not have legal status. I have no other home but the U.S. I am willing to top beets, sort onions, work on a roof in 100-plus-degree temperatures, or do whatever else I need to do to pay my own way. I want a college education, but there are no federal grants for me. I live with several other undocumented kids, and we pay our own way to college. There is NO way for me to become legal. One call to ICE, and I'm deported to what is, for me, a foreign country. Think that's an anomaly? I work exclusively with college students, and many of the most inspiring are immigrants. Boxing them in on all sides will NOT solve the problem. Go talk to an immigration attorney. Talk to a Catholic priest. Get the facts! Find out what it takes to become legal in the U.S.in 2009. We need immigration reform and a guest-worker program, not bigoted, ignorant rhetoric. Sure, I'm wasting my time, but I keep hoping someone will listen!

way to go illegals

well u hv to think who is going to do the jobs that the lazy americans do wnt to do it?

It's Amazing

I am constantly amazed when the issue of illegal immigration comes up at how few people (if any), understand this issue at all. If the government really wanted to stop this problem, it would be simple. There was a test program implemented a while back for checking Social Security numbers in a national database to make sure they belong to the right person. If that program were made permanent, employment of illegals would drop 90-95% overnight.

This will never happen, though. You see, most employers of illegals pay their taxes and treat them as regular employees. So the government gets billions in social security withholding from illegals who will never be around to claim them. Do you honestly think they're going to turn off that spigot?

Citizen

These are actions which are way overdue but it's only a very small start. Let's profile, yes profile, that politically incorrect word, the industries most likely to hire illegals, construction, restaurants, hospitality and
landscaping and fine them heavily. If they complain that they will go out of business then they will make way for those small business owners who do obey the law. Put E-verify into place immediately.

Then when we identify a problem, fine the employer and deport the illegals. Hopefully then there will be jobs for my honest, hardworking, citizen teens and college kids.

One thing that would help would be for the health departments to stop giving out food handler permits without any verification of status. This way they couldn't be hired by the restaurants. Ask your state representative why this can't be done and they will tell you that the restaurant association will lobby against any change.

To Nice ICE – Proper Focus

You support being “humane” to the illegal aliens who commit up to three felonies to get a job — document fraud, perjury on an I-9 form and identity theft - but what about the people like Patriotic American 9:15 p.m. who are the victims of these crimes. They are saddled with arrest records, bad credit, liability for unpaid taxes and corrupt medical records all so illegal aliens can get jobs.

According to the Social Security Administration, roughly 75% of illegal aliens have fake Social Security numbers. Under Utah law, anyone using a Social Security number that belongs to another person to obtain employment, either knowingly or unknowingly, is committing felony identity fraud.

In Utah, upwards of 50,000 Utah children are the victims of illegal alien identity theft and in Arizona that number exceeds one million children.

In your haste to be humane, you are sacrificing literally millions of American men, women and children to illegal alien driven identity theft. You are giving the perpetrators of these crimes a free pass and you are allowing them to use their stolen identities to get still other jobs. Where is the compassion and justice in that?

Don't stop there....

Check the lines at the welfare office, hospitals, and schools, including the U of U where illegals get in-state tuition.

Illegals deserve nothing. LEGAL immigration is welcomed with open arms and we look forward to them joining our country as productive, LAW-ABIDING citizens.

Law Abiding Citizen

I am sick of hearing the sob stories about people who break the law and try to use those stories to justify what they have done and avoid the consequences of their choices.

It would be nice if the liberal media, including the Deseret News, gave some semblance of equal time to stories about the victims of the crimes people here illegally commit.

Please let us enforce and live by the laws of this country.

To Janet:

Speaking as someone who waited for over 10 years to come to this country legally, who worked as a housekeeper cleaning toilets, and who paid out of state tuition to get my degree, I have little or no sympathy for those who skip the immigration line and break the law. I am now a proud american citizen, who loves and respects this country and the opportunities it has extended to me. My children have no need to skulk in the shadows because I never broke the law and I never took advantage of any of the social service, health or welfare benefits which illegals abuse at an alarming rate. I did not expect a handout but I did receive a hand up by working for it and by waiting and being legal. Yes, Janet, someone is listening, those who are waiting in line in Eastern Europe where I came from and in South America and even in Mexico where not all are willing to violate our borders.

the homeless shelter
