Level 1:
TCU - clearly the class of this conference

Level 2:
BYU - expect them to get on TCU's level in a couple years, especially with their recent recruitting pick ups.
Utah - a solid level 2 team

Level 3:
Air Force - slowly climbing the mountain

Level 4:
Wyoming - program on the rise
UNLV - terrible
Colorado State - program on the rise
San Diego State - program on the rise
New Mexico - terrible

RE: Anonymous

I disagree!!!!

Level 1: TCU & BYU

Level 2: Utah & Air Force

Level 3: Wyoming

Yawn....

Expecting the Cougars "to get on TCU's level in a couple of years"...is the same yarn we have been hearing for five years. Fact is that BYU is a good team, much better than average that has been recruiting well for many years. Speed, or lack thereof, is their problem. Until they get some defensively, they will remain a "level 2 team". They simply can't stay with teams who are superior in speed. Anonymous should go back to the drawing board and analyze the speed of these new BYU recruits.

MWC Levels

Level 1: TCU, BYU, Utah (specific order changes depending on year)

Level 2: Air Force

Level 3 (far below level 2): All the others (specific order changes depending on year but who really cares who is the worst. They all are horrible.)

Jordan

Yeah this year Utah isn't looking good, but recent history doesn't quite put the Utes as a level 2 team. Looks like we might have a good quarterback for a few years, too. Then again, we are all in armchairs, what any of us say doesn't really mean much. Oh well!
Go Utes!

Level of contenders

BCS=Utah and TCU-already proven consistently
Close third=Air Force
Division 1, but not a contender, Wyoming, CSU,
Division 2=BYU, UNLV, SDSU, New Mexico

Those are just the facts.

what??

how can you say utah is a level below TCU and BYU? Utah is the team with 2 BCS bowl wins, how many does TCU and BYU have, thats right 0

Top 2

Air Force beat Utah recently. Almost every MWC team has beaten Whit. On the other hand, Bronco is always part of the top 3, as is Patterson.

Eugene

You are all nuts, but who cares!

On any given day, any team can beat another. Utah has been great over the past few years. So has BYU and TCU. The Frogs are the class this year, hands down!

If the Cougs beat AF and Utah, how can you say that a team that has won 10 or more games in the past few years is a lower class team? It's all bunk!

Looks like the Big 3 will continue to be big next year.

JIMI

silly zobbies, puting byu ahead of utah lol. got three letters for ya B C S !!!!!

Re:Level of contenders

Finally, a post that makes sense.
Agree with your division, but would change to:

BCS quality: Utah, TCU-already proven consistently

BCS dreamer: AFA, BYU

Bottom: UNLV, WYO, SDSU, UNM, CSU

To be fair, BYU and AFA are at the same level.

Re: What @ 12:07

Don't fret over re @ 10:28. Just a disappointed cougar hoping that someday his team might make a splash on the national scene with a BCS appearance. Anybody who knows anything about the MWC knows that the big 3 dominate in football. The order varies from year to year and they seem pretty balanced year in and year out. Frustrated cougar fans are disappointed that Mendenhall hasn't taken them to the promised land where they believe they belong. Just because their coach says they are an elite team and his goal is a national championship doesn't make it so. A lot of things have to break a teams way as well as the team has to play great football. This year its TCU's turn. Will it ever be BYU's turn? Nobody knows but they will have to play better than Mendenhall has had them playing since he became their coach. They have had some good seasons but not BCS worthy seasons. But they can always hope and execute but it must be at an even higher level otherwise they will continue to be disappointed and still waiting for Magic to Happen.

akk

Utah, TCU and BYU are in class by themselves. I really think Utah and TCU will take turns winning the conference but BYU will always be there. It is not a good sign that BYU can't win it when they have a senior, 3 year starter at QB... Because they will always be weak defensively. TCU will again be very tough next year because their QB returns... but look out for the Utes the next to years with Wynn!!!

RE: Level of contenders 12:04 a

Your comments are a JOKE

The yewties are the only ones to play division II teams and LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSe!!!!

Do you have short term memory or have you forgotten the embarrassment the UTES inflicted upon the MWC by LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSING to Eastern Baptist?????

Go back to pumping gas until you get your facts right!!!!!!!!!

Level 1: TCU & BYU

Level 2: Utah & Air Force

Level 3: Wyoming

Unbelievable

Wow, I think some of you must work the BCS. Clearly, BYU, TCU, and Utah must be separated from the rest. Also, the grouping of these three change year to year. Last year Utah and TCU(losing by 3 doesn't to the other doesn't drop you a category) in division 1, BYU alone in 2, Air Force in 3, and the puu puu platter with the rest. This year, clearly TCU is in a league of its own, with BYU and Utah in the 2nd, and Air Force in the 3rd. Can't put Air Force with the big 3 because they haven't beaten any of them in a long time. Those that have Wyoming or any other MWC team not from the groups 1-3 above TCU, BYU, and Utah must have been the same that developed this terrible BCS system as well. Homeboy homers!

Cynic

UNM coach Mike Locksley. "You're going to be a heckuva ball game." Just what I always wanted to be in life. This is probably a typo or misquote, but poor Locksley. Nothing goes right for him this year. I think I'd pick CSU to win based on this years lack of Locksley/Lobo luck. Guinness should be notified about NM kicker Aho. He hit the uprights with 3 different kicks against the Cougs. My personal favorite kick ended up hitting both uprights before being ruled a miss. I thought it was the BYU highlight of the game.

Re: Unbelievable

Actually, Air Force beat Utah and TCU just two years ago, and finished second in the conference.

But you're correct to group BYU, TCU, and Utah together because since TCU joined the conference in 2005 only BYU, Utah and TCU have won conference titles, and so far each champion has gone undefeated in conference play. If TCU wins out this year then the pattern will be repeated.

However, the idea that TCU will dominate the conference from here on out is debatable. In 2007, BYU was clearly the class of the MWC, having won 16 straight conference games.

In 2008, Utah seemed to be poised on the edge of dominance, but the Utes are headed for their customary 3rd place finish this year.

TCU looks to be the favorite next year, but they could stumble as well. Remember, BYU was supposed to win the conference last year, and look what happened.

San Diego State

That's the one weak program that I don't get. How can you not get quality players who either 1) live in the recruiting hot bed of So Cal or 2) want to come live in San Diego. Really? How does this not happen.

Air Force has to recruit a specific kind of player, similar to what BYU has to do. Wyoming has to recruit to Laramie. But, how does SDSU not get players?
