Am I missing something?? Flags on helmets?? How can a state even think of such a stupid thing? I have always thought of Utah as a conservative state that would never consider such a trite way of taking away another freedom. A state that doesn't require helmets on motorcycles but wants flags on helmet on ATV riders. On the vehicle maybe, but don't bring flagged helmets out here in the real world.
Why would you even spend the time and taxpayers money on discussing this kind of thing. I'm beginning to think that getting elected to office gets you people into such rarified air that you develop oxygen starved brains and drop your IQ's by 50-60 points.
Man, maybe I am glad I moved out of the State 40 years ago.
I'm thinking about adding your newspapers to my comic relief folder in my favorites folder.
You belong on Saturday Night Live!!!
Good Luck citizens of the poor state of Utah (confusion.)
Maybe not. What happens when someone goes over the front of the machine and lands head-first? I wouldn't want to be the first one to prove this is a bad idea by driving a post through my head or chest.
Might just as well make us wear those great, fashionable green shirts and vests. Oh, and while you're at it how about roll cages and air bags. Mayabe a top speed of 2 1/2 miles per hour. And oh yea if we have to wear them, the idea of you all wearing them (the helmets and green vest) while you're about the "peoples business". Get real.
1) Read the article before you comment.
2) The flags are optional on your helmet. You already are required by state law to have a flag on your vehicle.
3) There is no "post" on your head. It's a spring.
I've always wanted to ride around with a lightning rod on my head.
"The $24.99 kit he sells includes a plate, a short metal ROD and flag. The plate attaches to the helmet, and the ROD, which extends above the helmet, goes on the plate."
Collisions of riders on ATV's is the issue. Coming over a dune and meeting someone head on is bad for rider and machine. Solve this problem and you'll make a lot of money.
Nobody's going to get rich on "helmet flags."
I'm always amazed at the comments that come from citizens that do not look into the idea of something being different and new. Boy where would this country be without the crazy notion of driving a motorized vehicle. You would have put poor old Henry in a mental institute. I thought America was to be about ingenuity. Looks like most readers of the Deseret News are blind to this fact. Glad to see an American looking at taking a risk and trying something new that has never been done, sad to see that some of you just don't get it. And lastly heaven forbid our government be for something new and improve safety in a place where chaos comes with the territory.
It is a serious safety issue. Helmets were not designed to have anything attached to them AND perform as intended. I cannot believe something like this is not only suggested, but actually seriously considered. It has nothing to do with "being blind to new ideas" and such. It is unsafe. Period. Ask helmet manufacturers about safety of such contraption, or medical professionals about injuries that might come from using such thing, then talk about source of resistance to such idiotic proposals. It is another example of someone using safety as an excuse to make a buck, but actually putting riders at serious risk.
The Transportation Interim Committee and anyone else involved should have some idea about the issues they are debating.
Question for Steve Butler: whats next? helmet mounted safety harness for bungee jumping?
Some people should engage their brain before commenting. I have tried the Helmet Flag. Yes it works for the purpose it is intended. I am also an off road safety instructor for OHM, ATV and Snowmobile. This product does what it is suppose to do. It also is safe to use, the flag-pole will break away if you go under tree limbs or in an accident. The mounting plate is not metal it is moldable rubber. Before making uninformed comments, watch there video. Or go get one look it over, and try it before you condemn it. By the way I have nothing to do with this company. But they did ask me to try it and evaluate it.
