I saw the title of this article and clicked straight on the commenting link.....i havent read any of this article...BYU loses homefield invincibility....wow..has to be the lamest thing i've ever heard. It's not like they've played any really really good teams lately. Last year they played both TCU and Utah away. The rest of their schedule was a cake walk. The year before last they got lucky with the 4th and 18 at the end of the game against Utah.(even though they did outplay Utah the whole game). Nobody please read this article, the heading tells how bad it is.
Turf | 11:27 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Time to just get rid of the real grass and get artificial turf, we haven't lost a game on artificial turf since the vegas bowl.
Turf II | 1:09 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
It would be a great investment to get turf. No more complaining about divots, etc. (it would, however, be a fast surface, maybe something they wouldn't want opponents on)

If they got turf, maybe then they would start to host HS games or even the JC bowl game.

Turf is the way to go, not sure why they are using natural grass when so many great alternatives are available.

Utes will embarrass BYU. Utah has bigger, better, faster, smarter and more faithful players.

Cougars will have to put their diapers on after the Utes destroy them. Again! Ha Ha Ha.

GO UTES! ! ! !
Scott | 6:47 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
BYU Players: Please make a real effort these last games, will ya? No more high school appearances. Come to fight and if you don't win at least you will have TRIED. You looked pretty indifferent recently.
Re: LAAAAME | 6:55 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Uh, dude...If you read the article...they were being sarcastic. Yes,I read the article...which was ok...BYU just needs to step up...
turf | 6:56 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
time to give it up on the turf comments - turf looked good in last game against TCU
artificial | 6:59 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Artificial turf may look nice, but it is not nice for athletes. It is much more likely to result in injury (when compared to a sand based field with proper maintenance). Recent survey of NFL players shows that they clearly prefer it. As a former player that played on both, I would much rather play on natural grass. Having some give in the turf is good. Last year, reporter asked Utah players (Johnson, etc.) and they said they would prefer natural grass.

So, what do we want? Safe conditions for players or perfect green grass without divots?
New Mexico | 7:03 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
anyone else notice the divots in the New Mexico game last weekend? Nobody says anything when it happens at other stadiums. Why the obsession with it at BYU?
access | 7:31 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Utah, what is your obssession with BYU?
Kyle | 8:17 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
My obsession with BYU?

Just trying to focus on the helpless and disadvantaged. LOL...

BYU will lose to UTES.
UTah | 8:26 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
hey Utah good game Vs TCU... seriously... Good game... 55 points nice D. so ya keep talking.
Small Men | 8:33 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
It's called Small Man's disease and the Yewts have had it for a real long time. Even when they have a good team, they still feel inferior due to their small mental stature. That is why they spend more time commenting about BYU then they do their own team. Many of those that are commenting on articles like this, couldn't tell you much about their own team.
Please Bronco! | 8:52 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
He says, "they know where I stand..." No need to motivate them, and now the players are saying they just need to "execute". Football is all about the fire in the belly, the adrenaline - being in the zone. If you have the aforementioned, you will execute!
During the Bronco era | 8:55 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
The Cougars have had a total of 5 home losses.

Meanwhile, the Utes have had 4 during that same time period.

Yet no one is asking if Utah has lost it's home-field advantage.

Considering they way they scraped by against Air Force and Wyoming, and last year against Oregon State and TCU, perhaps that is a question the Deseret News should be asking.
Turf | 9:19 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
New turf at BYU may again be in the cards this offseason. After the Utes busted the BCS in 2008, BYU was handed a nice check for about $600,000, which paid for the new grass. With TCU now in line to bust the BCS this year, maybe BYU can again use their hand-me-down money to purchase turf.

Or maybe they could just put their money where there mouths are from April to early September and get to the BCS themselves.
re: UTah | 9:20 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Utah also put up 28 points, with a FRESHMAN QB. Thats 14 more points than "Heisman" Hall has produced in the last two years versus TCU!

And Jerry Hughes was still harrassing Wynn with 2:00 left in the game.
Jake | 9:23 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
For some reason having the number 4 team in the country score 50 something points on you doesn't seem nearly as bad as having an unranked team score 50 something point on you. Especially when you consider the game against the ranked team was on the road and the other at home. Finally to score 28 on one of the top defenses in the country with a freshman quarterback starting just his second game seems better than having your Heisman candidate quarterback score only 7 at home against the same team.

Just an observation.
Cougar in Texas | 9:25 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
It seems to me that in the past the Cougars would lose a game or two per season, but the losses were generally 45-42, after a prolonged shootout. The defense appears to be better, except in losses to FSU and TCU, but the offensive output also appears to be questionable. I can accept a loss, but not a loss with no or minimal scoring by the vaunted BYU offensive machine(??).
Home field? | 9:29 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
It's all about winning the next game and continuing dominance over AFA. 6 straight wins. Scoring average of 41 ppg. Never fewer than 31. Then all the childish smack can begin in earnest.

What fun . . . not.
BYU Graduate | 9:40 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
I have never laughed so hard as when I saw the Florida State Player grab a chunk of BYU's home turf at the end of the game to take home. This was all on national t.v. lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Robert | 9:45 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Utah non-conference opponents:
Utah State; Won, record - (3,7)
San Jose State; Won, record - (1,8) [LOST to Utah State!]
Oregon; Lost, record - (8,2)
Louisville; Won, record - (4,6)

BYU non-conference opponents:
Oklahoma (3); Won, record (6,4)
Tulane; Won, record (3,7)
Florida State; Lost, (5,5)
Utah State; Won, record (3,7)

Both teams lost one out of four non-conference games.

Of BYU's non-conf opponents that they beat, one has a winning record, two have loosing records.
Of Utah's non-conf opponents that they beat, ALL three have loosing records.

BYU has scored 353 points and given up 216 points. (137 points more than opponents)
Utah has scored 290 points and given up 203 points. (87 points more than opponents)

Somehow I just don't see how the Yewt fans think their team is so superior to the Y.
Anonymous | 10:21 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Geez, it seems like this week's mantra for the Utes is "freshman quarterback". It got old after the first two posts about it.

Will you be blaming your freshman quarterback when you lose to BYU on the 28th?
Utes | 10:27 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
...will lose to the Cougars.

And Wednesday the Aggies will spank the Utes on the basketball court.
Re: Kyle; 4:40 AM | 10:51 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009

Re: Robert | 11:50 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Duh, Duh, Duh once again the stats come out as if there will be some extra credit given at the end of the season. Here's a stat to dwell on. YOU LOST TO TCU @ HOME by 31 points. YOUR OFFENSE SCORED 7 points @ HOME with your THIRD YEAR starting QB. THE UTES LOST by 27 points to TCU ON THE ROAD. THE UTES SCORED 28 points on the TCU D on the ROAD with a freshman QB in his 2nd start! (not year, 2nd start) So if you take THESE STATS stat boy it looks like the game on the 28th is going to be this STAT: BYU loses three home games this season by being outscored by over 100 points!!! Yes Robert, UTAH WINS!!
Home losses = 92 to 35  | 12:19 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Two losses at home this year and 92 points given up by Bronco's defense - only 35 points scored by the offense in those two games. "A big part of those losses were lack of execution and missed assignments on our part (Bronco Mendenhaul)". Isn't EVERY loss attributed to lack of execution? These losses weren't just lack of execution but were also lack of preparation by the coaching staff. Bronco made a big deal when he took over for Crowton that home field advantage would be restored but it seems that Bronco himself was the one that seemes to have forget that promise. BYU was clearly not ready mentally to play the FSU game nor were they ready with a good game plan. Same true with TCU. TCU was better than BYU but FSU wasn't and it is a shame to lose so badly to a lesser team. The TCU game should have been alot closer as well had a better game plan been put together by the coaching staff. Airforce ran the ball against TCU which played into TCU's only weakness. They lost by 3 points in the final minute. BYU was clueless.
Jimmy | 12:25 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Maybe he Aggies want to play BYU's next football game in the Spectrum. It's the only place USU can win.
Lucky QB | 12:28 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
I don't think anyone on the Utes side should be bragging about their QB(s). Wynn was very fortunate to complete 2 long passes for one of the TDs on TCU because David Reed made 2 spectacular catches.
Lavell never lost at home... | 12:29 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Lavell NEVER got blown out at home. BYU did lose at home (not very often) but the scores were usually only a touch down or less. Never blow outs like this year. Every team can have a let down at home but twice is unacceptable. BYU was not prepared to play FSU which is completely unforgivable and then the TCU game was worse. The problems seem to stem from BYU coaches not tooling the game plan to the opponent. Norm Chow was a master at this and so were other BYU coordinators. This year BYU seems to simply stumble into every game with the exact same game plan irregardless as to whom they are playing. Both FSU and TCU were built on SPEED on defense and BYU should have presented a controlled running game against them with three step short safe passes along with some play action but instead they decided to drop back and throw the ball down field which played right into the defense's hands. Very poor game plan which resulted in the game getting out of hand in a hurry. So.... BLAME THE COACHES is my point!!!!
@re: UTah | 12:30 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
The "superior" utah defense gave up 17 more points than the "inferior" BYU defense.
Home fans | 12:36 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Nothing is more exciting than seeing the BYU fans leave their stadium in a humiliated state, game after game. Quest??? Heisman??? BCS Buster??? Please stop with the hilarious predictions until at least you have beaten either UTAH or TCU, the true rulers of the MWC.
Stupid argument | 12:41 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
I'm pretty sure alot of these "Ute Fans" posting on these articles are Salt Lake City 7th graders wasting time in their computer Lit classes. I see no other explanation, as the majority of their comments are childish and incoherent. And don't even try to compare common opponent statistics this year. TCU is a wash as both teams got blasted, otherwise, BYU concedes New Mexico, and...wait, that's about it. Utah has been in a dog-fight with nearly every opponent the entire season. Maybe you haven't watched the games? Seems you guys are more interested in the Cougars failures than the Utes successes. Kind of pathetic don't you think?
Cougarf@n | 12:47 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
This last weekend turned everything upside down for the rivalry game. I thought Utah's defense was better than BYU's (based mostly on the way BYU's defense makes even average passing QB's look like Peyton Manning) and then Utah gives up 55 to TCU. I thought BYU was better at avoiding letdown games against crappy teams than Utah and then BYU plays awful against UNM. In my view, the teams are just about even (BYU has a better win and generally higher margins of victory against the same opponents, but BYU also has uglier losses) so the real difference will be BYU's home field advantage.

BYU matches up against AF much better than Utah so I expect a more convincing victory than the Yewts OT win. Although, if BYU doesn't play better than they did against UNM they could lose this one easily.
re: Robert | 12:48 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Very easy to refute your claims with actual stats.

Part of the BCS rankings are computer driven. Pieces of equipment that simply compute information based on SOS, W/L, Opponents W/L, etc. And here is what those unbiased computers say about these teams today:

Utah has a ranking of 0.23. That is 20th out of 25.
BYU has a ranking of 0.01. That is dead last at #25 in the BCS rankings.

When a computer takes into account all the garbage you tried to get into your post, they say Utah is better than BYU.

Care you argue with those unbiased computers?
re: @re: UTah | 12:50 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
I guess we can decipher that BYU has a better defense, and Utah with a Freshman QB has a better offense. Doesn't speak to highly of "Heisman" Hall.

Just using your standards.
re: Stupid argument | 12:58 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Utah 8-2
BYU 8-2

SOS
Utah 90
BYU 103

BCS
Utah 21
BYU 22

BCS Computer Rankings
Utah 20
BYU 25

Utah losses: @ Oregon (#11), @ TCU (#4)
BYU losses: home to 5-5, unranked FSU, and home to TCU (#4)

Sorry, but blowout wins over Wyoming/UNLV don't seem to be helping BYU when it comes to actual facts that the BCS computer rankings are based on.
Mr. BYU | 12:59 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Sorry Yewt fans. Your team will be going down on the 28th at BYU! You really think that your team has a realistic chance of winning? Earlier in the season it was pretty disgusting watching your team barely get by teams that BYU stomped! I knew Utah had NO chance at even coming close to beating TCU.

Be prepared to lose one more this season as you visit Lavell Edwards Stadium on the 28th. Take it to the bank! BYU 31 Utah 17
re: Lavell never lost at home... | 1:00 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
I posted most of this response on another thread likely to the same illogical person that posted the above.

Below are all home games LaVell was head coach for.

9/23/72 L 19-42 UtahSt (23)
10/21/72 L 17-49 AzSt (32)
10/7/78 L 7-24 UtahSt (17)
10/16/93 L 20-45 Notre Dame (25)
10/29/94 L 15-36 AzSt (21)
9/9/95 L 9-26 UCLA (17)
11/18/95 L 17-34 Utah (17)
9/6/97 L 20-42 Wash (22)

Don't say never unless you can prove the absolute with facts.

Below are all home games Bronco was head coach for.

9/3/05 L 3-20 BC (17)
9/19/09 L 28-54 FSU (26)
10/24/09 L 7-38 TCU (31)

These also account for all but 2 of Bronco's home defeats EVER.

Again it seems like recency is all that matters in most arguments on this board even though people represent it as historical.
re: Cougarf@n | 1:02 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
And we'll see if Utah can avoid needing a late FG to hold off SDSU.

Don't forget that Utah with a Freshman QB put up more points in one game (28) than "Heisman" Hall has put up against TCU in 2 years (14). And that was done with the TCU starters on the field still blitzing with 2:30 left in the game.

I think you're right though. I would have expected Utah's D to play better and Utah's O to scramble for 10 points.

Should make for a great game on 11/28.
funny Utes | 1:07 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
They lose by 4 fewer points than BYU and make a big deal about using a Freshman QB and the game being played on the road.

What they conveniently ignore is games like Wyoming (Utah home/BYU road) and UNLV (both road) in which BYU was significantly better in both games.

In fact of the 6 common opponents BYU and Utah have played so far, BYU has outperformed Utah in 4 (USU, CSU, Wyo, UNLV), Utah has outperformed BYU in 1 (NM), and BYU and Utah performed about the same against 1 (TCU).

Utah's "superior" defense gave up 17 more points and 150 more yards to TCU than BYU.

BYU only scored 7 points, but BYU had more total yards offense against TCU than Utah.

Many Utah fans who blog here are so clueless that they only look at final scores when making comparisons.

So a game in which the winner led 35-10 with less than a minute to go when the loser scored a meaningless TD is considered to be equal to a game in which the winner only led 26-17 late in the 3rd quarter.
Desert Coug | 1:19 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Re: Lavell Never lost @ Hom

I agree that it is a Coaching Issue. Bronco's Teams have lost when BYU has been out coached. I feel that somehow Bronco doesn't get the team focused for the BIG game as well as the AFA will (Or Coach Whittingham will)

I have no desire for any Coaching changes @ The Y, B UT I hope The Coaches can get the fire in the belly attitude directed better...somehow.
Re: Jake | 1:41 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
your right brother, the truth is the truth.
Pedro | 1:47 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Fanatical BYU fan here. Hate to say it but the pukes will win on 11/28. Why? If I have to answer this question, you haven't been following BYU for the last 30 years, or are ignoring what you have been watching this year. COACHING!!!!! Correction, LACK OF COACHING!!!! Are BYU coaches the only ones that don't see what having corners play at least 10 yards off the line does--first down! Please send Rich on more blitzes. Please make an attempt to disguise blitzes. Every time Anae turns Hall loose to call the plays, what happens--BYU scores (Final drive at Oklahoma, last scoring drive at New Mexico)
What statement does this make about Anae's play calling? Is anyone else tired of the annoucers saying all game "the middle has been soft all game, why hasn't BYU exploited that" "BYU was running the ball at a 6.8 ypc clip and now they have abandoned the run" "Dennis Pita has been quiet today, BYU has only thrown him the ball twice today" etc. etc. Until Anae is fired/demoted get used to let downs in big games. No demonstrated ability to prepare for big games.
Lame article... | 2:13 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
from a lame sportswriter.

Even elite programs like Florida and USC occassionally drop home games.

The Florida State game was a disappointment, but TCU was simply a much better team. Home, away, or on a neutral field, it wouldn't have made any diffence where the game was played this season, TCU was going to win that game.

It is interesting, however, that the writer completely ignored the other half of the equation, that BYU is UNDEFEATED on the road this season, something that hasn't happened to BYU in a MUCH longer period of time than the last time BYU dropped a game or two at home.

46-15 is pretty dang good ya dummy. obviously they are doing something right
Look for Utah to Give | 2:41 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
BYU a very good game on the 28th......After they lose to San Diego State on the 21st. Utah will still be shell shocked from TCU and looking forward to the BYU game. They will look lost for three quarters before staging a late come back to pull within 7 before SDSU puts the nail in the coffin.

SDSU 31
Utah 17
Floridaalum | 3:13 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
I will settle the argument. Both BYU and Utah are second rate teams, especially BYU. Have they ever been in a BCS game? I will give Utah kudo's that they would have been a lofty opponent last year. This year - not so much. BYU is a joke, they couldn't even beat FSU at home.

TCU is a real contender but they have not really played anyone this year.
Re:Look for Utah to Give | 3:16 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
I think you are breaking the wow by drinking too much. Utah did something against TCU that BYU couldn't - put points on the board. Utah will humiliate BYU at home and all those poor foul weather fans will leave with their heads hung low.

GO UTES!!!!
I was amazed last night | 3:57 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
when I watched the Ute/TCU replay. I only saw the last three minutes of the first quarter and the first three minutes of the second quarter, but I saw four Frog touchdowns. It took the Utes less than one half to essentially match BYU's game against TCU.

Now doesn't what I just posted sound ridiculous? What's the point of comparing different games/situations to get a leg up in an argument.

Please, Ute fan, go post on your own articles.

BYU realists know that AFA will give the Cougars EVERYTHING they can handle. Yet, they also know that on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, playing at home, and playing up to the best they've played this year, BYU should beat Utah–based on Utah's average game perfomance so far. However, the Utes usually play out of their minds against their rival–home or away. A motivated, passionate, and consistent Y team trumps the U every time. As a Cougar fan, I hope they have all three that day.
