same old story | 10:13 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Last year they started out terrible too. Lost to Idaho, some other D-2 team, Utah State by one. Boylen needs to prepare the team before the season starts, not after. You gotta give him some credit because the Utes did make it to the NCAA tournament. You cant really blame them for losing their first game either. Arizona, had 3 players drafted into the NBA. Two of these players in the top fifteen of the draft. Chase Budinger, for Arizona, was drafted in the 2nd round, but against the Jazz the other night, he scored 20+ points. He looked very good. So overall Boylen is better than Giacolleti(however its spelled). He just needs prepare the team better
Re: same old story | 6:36 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
You're right about 'same old story', but your in-depth analysis is way off. Utes had no business losing to Idaho this year or Idaho STATE last year.
After hearing Boylen preach defense all pre-season, the Vandals drop 94 points on the Utes. It's not about 'shot selection', that should be a given by veteran players, it's about DEFENDING the shot. Being a 'young team' is really a lame excuse. They're not that young and have greatly superior talent.

Last year Boylen got a talented, veteran team to at least play better than Giacoletti could ever do (which isn't saying much), but then really botched the coaching job against Arizona. He played right into their fast-paced running game, rendering Nevill useless. Play to YOUR strengths, not theirs.

Boylen has some impressive recruits, but has yet to impress anybody as a coach.

the Utes haven't played defense since Majerus left.

being a 'young team' isnt an excuse, its reality. look at the roster and you'll see, not much upper classmen and not much D1 experience.

The truth is that this year is going to be a 'rebuilding year', even though boylen doesnt like calling it that (good for him).

We finally got the Nevill stink out. He was in that range where he was good enough that you had to play him and run the offense through him, but not good enough to take the team or program to the 'next level'. It took him til his senior year to produce, and then couldnt grab a roster spot anywhere in the NBA.

The Boylen era is now just beginning. Buckle up and enjoy the ride.
Shot selection? | 8:51 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
You give up 94 points and blame the loss on shot selection?
See my post  | 8:54 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
from Saturday. It was as much selfishness as it was shot selection. Brown and Henderson were the worst offenders, so they shot the worst percentage.
Combine selfish play with poor defense and poor rebounding technique and you have an ugly style of play. I drove from Idaho with my son to take him to the game. It was hard to watch and if Boylen doesn't nip it in the butt, I won't renew my season tickets.
Coaching | 9:09 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Seems to be a pattern of Coaching issues. "Shot Selection" is a coaching issue. Do they not run an offense? And I agree with the above comments: How does Shot Selection have anything to do with Idaho dropping 94 on the Utes. Team Defense is lacking. Either the Vandals are going to the NCAA tournament, or the Utes are starting out very poorly. I think it is the latter.

So remember how Ute fans were saying it was OK to lose to Idaho because they are a good experienced team? Well, Idaho lost to Texas Southern on Sunday by 7. So.... yeah.

Undoubtedly the Utes are not playing decent defense, but the points Boylen makes are valid. It takes time to learn effective defense, so bear with the young Utes. For those criticizing Boylen, how about we bring back Giacolleti? Ugh! I think not. Give the man time with the young ones. They will be pretty good by mid-season, and even better at the end. Next year will be a WOW!
Buckle up for the Boylen era... | 10:28 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
You had better because it's going to be a bad wreck.

Last year they started out terrible too. Lost to Idaho, then embarrassed the whole MWC by lossign badly to Southeast Baptist. That was one of the worst games I have ever witnessed by a D1 college team. From that time on, I decided that I was through with the UTES!!!!

Boylen needs to prepare the team before the season starts, not after.

If they want to improve their season, maybe they need to play Southeast Baptist again and this time WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

being judicious! | 2:10 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
even tommy connor teaches a good game! and it will show remarkable improvement...not selfishnish...majerues still rules!

I used to live right next to the Texas Southern Campus in a city called Sunnyside in Downtown Houston. Texas Southern is good.......with medicine. Athletics they are horrible at. I wouldn't predict the Utes season by this game, but it's defianatly a cause for concern.
6 p.m.??? | 12:23 p.m. Nov. 18, 2009
a mid-week game starting a 6 p.m.???

what our the folks up on the hill thinking?

are they just trying to keep Aggie fans from outnumbering the Utes fan?

only two games into the season, and the Utes may already be seeing the season slipping away;

if the Utes lose to the Aggies, they'll be lucky to finish with a winning record before MWC play begins
Boise State Fan | 12:50 p.m. Nov. 18, 2009
