Amen. I am a fan of both teams. Think the world of both coaches and cheer for both teams. But come the Nov game sorry I am more Blue. Grew up Red right next to the U but graduated Blue.

Congrats to both teams and coaches. May the best team win here real soon.
Gold? | 11:04 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Considering their huge salaries for being a coach, I think Bronco and Kyle are the ones who struck gold.

Good for both schools.

BYU is probably as good as they will ever be. For what BYU wants to be, fans should accept that.

For those BYU fans who want to smallow a little hard and look at Utah like a BYU Salt Lake and root for a program that takes football seriously, then they can root for Utah. Just try to ignore some of the Utah fans.

Utah is probably the only school capable of beating TCU next year. I hope they can do it just so TCU doesnt start to think they are too good for the MWC.

Um Dick.....while BYU will be rebuilding next year losing the entire below average defense and the qb and tight end. Utah will be solid, and TCU will have a tough time beating Utah in Salt Lake City. It was amazing that the Utes defense was not all that this season, but with Sean Smith, Brice McCain, and Kruger leaving, the rest of the eight returning starters were not as good as thought to be. When Hughes leaves TCU, I think that TCU won't be as dominant on defense. But speed kills and the Y needs more....Utah has speed.
Serious? | 12:10 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Whit is a much better coach. While the TCU games stands as an exception Utah has been the more relevant school nationally, while BYU has largely underperformed when compared to expectations. Maybe BYU just needs to adjust expectations?

But undeniably Whit is the superior coach who seems to do a much better job at coaching up to big games.

BYU, well they choke most of their statement games, that has been the pattern.
Re: bigutefan | 12:53 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Who's rebuilding next year?

Utah's defense isn't quite as great as their talked up to be and next year they lose:

Robert Johnson
Joe Dale
R.J. Stanford
Stevenson Sylvester
Mike Wright
Kepa Gaison
Kenape Eliapo
Koa Misi

And you plan on replacing all of those players. . .how?

The only starters you're left with are Brandon Burton and 2 D-lineman.

Oh yeah, and doesn't Dave Reed AND Aiona Key leave next year too?

Jordan Wynn is coming back, and so are your two running backs, I'll give you that too.

So, crunch the numbers, and it looks like Utah might go bowling with 6 wins next year. . .

Bronco took over a broken program while Whit stepped into the team that Urban built. The fact that Bronco has one more win that Whit is amazing to say the least.

While I do like Whit's straight talk more than Mendenhall (does he get paid everytime he says "execution" in an interview? Drives me bonkers), I want to take an unofficial poll and see how this turns out (and try to be honest everyone):

Utah Fans- Would you be better off, worse, or the same with Bronco at the helm?

BYU Fans- Would you be better off, worse, or the same with Whit at the helm?
THEeyepatch | 2:23 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
18 million to by out Charlie Weis, must have seemed like a bargain for Notre Dame at the time. By that comparison, Kyle and Bronco are grossly under paid.
Anonymous | 3:03 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
iirc BYU has beaten Utah 2 out of the past 3 games played. I graduated from BYU and got an MBA at Utah and like both teams. I favor BYU. Kyle is a better coach for Utah and Bronco is a better coach for BYU. I hope they both stay put for a long while.

Although I am hoping BYU manages to beat AFA and then make it 3 out of the last 4 against the Utes, I hope it is another great game with drama that is long remembered - and yes, I think a certain tight end is still wide open in the end zone, but Dennis Pitta was good enough to make fans forget. BYU and Utah seem dead even this year and about even with AFA. That will make for 2 interesting weeks of Cougar football.
Serious??? | 3:16 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
I guess BYU was expected to beat #3 Oklahoma this year? Say what you want about Oklahoma's record, that was the only game where Bradford actually played. BYU is up-and-coming, showing they can compete, largely, with the big boys of college football and that realization is convincing blue chip recruits like Jake Heaps (#1 quarterback prospect in the nation, not the state) to come to BYU and to bring other great players along with them. Stop saying BYU can't compete, they do and they're getting better at it, in spite of the FSU and TCU games this season and other disappointing losses in the past BYU is becoming more competitive. And even if BYU never wins (uhemmm) another National Championship, we can hold our heads high in the type of program we are running and creating. Like one of the player's wives told me lately, "we might not have the most athletic or fastest players on our team, but I wouldn't want my husband to play with anyone else." I wish Utah fans wouldn't say such illogical things, get over our domination of U from 1970-1994 and get a brain!
Speed | 5:27 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Read Brad Rock's article a few weeks ago about BYU and speed. They have NEVER had speed. Even when they won just about every conference title in the 80s and 90s and even a few years ago. So, teams can win without much speed (Iowa), and speedy teams (Miami & FSU) can lose.
With regards to adjusting expectations, BYU has been very consistent over the past 3 years. I think most of us know exactly what to expect from them....10 win seasons and a finish in the top 2 of the conference.
Both teams are very lucky with their coaches, but the story will be told over the next 10-15 years.
Bear Laker | 5:56 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
There is not a better coach suited to BYU than Bronco. If Whit had come to the Y, he would have run a Crowton type of program. With the recruiting class that is coming in to the Y it has the potential to breakout in the next few years. One thing that drives me crazy is the U has had two good years in 49 years and the fans think they are a national powerhouse. TCU and Oregon both exposed the yewts as no faster than the Y. Yewt fans are classless, obnoxious nincompoops. If the Y were to ever drop their athletic progams, I would not ever become a yewt fan. Hate 'em!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hmmmmm | 6:04 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
No quote from Whittingham. He probably declined. No one in the world can be more patronizing and condecending (sp) than Bronco. Look at the quote. Bronco is a good enough coach for the Mountain. Whittingham is the better coach. He also knows whento keep his mouth shut. So the Y is ranked. That does not mean much. Look at the Y's record against top ten opponents during the past years.
Bronco loves to see his name in print and his words in print. Why doesnt he just coach and forget the press coverage that he loves. Love the Y. Don't care fot the coach. Don't like Utah, but I do like the coach. Go figure.
Re: Serious? | 6:17 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
"Utah has been the more relevant school nationally."

I don't know which nation you live in, but having split time between Connecticut and Indiana over the last five years I hear about BYU football much more often than Utah in the local and national press, whether that news is good or bad. While Utah is one the rise and is certainly respected nationally, I wouldn't count BYU out just yet.
ute alum | 6:31 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
serious? really. agreed Utah has had a better record of late in getting up for big games but the record still speaks for itself. Both are very good coaches. Remember, Mendenhall has many more barriers in recruiting, much higher academic standards, missions, code of conduct and limited diversity in Utah county, all of which are higher hurdles that Whittingham doesn't have to contend with.
Dick | 6:32 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
How has Kyle "equaled and surpassed" what Urban did at Utah?

Urban won two outright championships in two years. Kyle has won one in five years. Urban lost 1 MWC game TOTAL in 2 years. Kyle has lost more than 1 MWC every year but 1.

Kyle's done a good job at Utah but to say he has surpassed what Urban did is just not true.
I may be biased | 6:42 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009

But I agree that Coach K is a better coach.
He has won big games --with the exception of TCU last week-end. Also, at the national level, he is there too. COY. BCS. Most importantly, not too many coaches at the mid-major level can go 10-2 in a rebuilding year.
Let me be the first to say this...expect Utah to be in the race for another BCS next year.

SoCalUtahFan

PS. Good article, Dick.
Tom in CA | 6:53 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
BYU may have a "good" record - but you never know which team will show up from one week to the next.

There is a consistency problem that is obvious - it goes to the coaching staff.

Doug in Florida | 7:04 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
As a transplant Utahan living in Florida, I am happy to say that all three schools from the MWC are getting good reviews in the east, especially Utah and TCU this year. Although, BYU gained a lot of respect for beating Oklahoma, a school that not many in Florida care for. Unfortunately though, they are still not considered more than good programs with a one or two year winning streak. Hopefully with their success, and these three great coaches, all three schools can continue to recruit well to stay competitive for years to come. What would also help them is to add strength to the MWC. If they could pull in Boise State, that would give the conference and all four schools more credit. Go Utah, BYU, and TCU!!!
It's funny | 7:05 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
how an article praising BYU, TCU, and Utah brings comments that tears down the other programs. Yesterday at work one BIG Ute fan says to another, "at least we didn't lose to TCU as bad as BYU did." Not only did the Utes lose by more points but it is sad that his happiness comes only at the expense of another team.
RE: BCS Games | 7:36 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Dick,

I am not one of your regular fans but this is a nice article. One observation though. I can understand the resentment from a few BYU fans about Kyle's success at a national level but I would have thought you would be above the the pettiness. Utah didn't just participate in two BCS games, they won and did so convincingly. I know you "bleed blue" (remember those ridiculous billboards at point of the mountain) but perhaps you could give some credit to the Utes for their BCS wins and Coach Whit about his win over Alabama. They didn't just participate. I supposed until BYU gets to a BCS game and maybe wins we will continue to listen to Cougar fans try to talk up Bronco's success while wishing for the success Kyle achieved. Yes Bronco has one more win in the two coaches careers but one of Kyle's has been BCS and I am sure Bronco and the rest of Cougar Nation would give up their conference championships to be able to say the same. Perhaps I have higher expectations of fans and writers. But I never give up hoping because,

earns less than a head coach | 7:37 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
I don't feel sorry for Mike Sanford. I probably would not have done better than him, and Bronco or Whittingham would likely at best have been marginally better than him at UNLV. While I think that's good that Bronco doesn't feel happy about the downfall of his peers in the profession, he ought to have a little perspective that Sanford just had a 5 year opportunity to earn several hundred thousand bucks a year. That's more than I make and more than I might ever make. I personally feel no sympathy towards Sanford for being fired. Schools like UNLV don't just need a good football coach to succeed, they need a miracle worker. Every week, 50% of the teams in the U.S. have to lose. There's no way every team can be a powerhouse.
Bronnnnnnnnco | 7:47 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
cannot win a big game . That simple . Bronco will NEVER have BYU in a BCS Bowl . NEVER . Bronco has a hard time beating the like of New Mexico. Basically Bronco is worthless
Average Coaches | 7:50 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Both are good coaches, but lets not get carried away here. They both compete in a weak conference and other than 3 teams this conference is nothing!
Anonymous | 7:58 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Lot of childish back and forth here.
How embarrasing for you guys.

Can your dad beat up my dad?
Re; Bear Laker | 8:00 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
You are right. Both BYU and Bronco are perfect for each other. Unfortunately, Cougar Nation expects more and I am not convinced that Bronco can get them there. For good or bad, both BYU and Utah fans spin their schools records to support their argument. But what matters is what are the recent results. Nobody with perhaps the exception of you cares about 49 years ago or even 5 years ago. Both coaches are doing well with their teams, but Cougar nation still yearns for what Utah has done recently. Will Utah get to another BCS game? Nobody knows. I believe it will be easier for BYU to get to a BCS game if the MWC becomes an AQ conference. But don't hold your breath for that anytime soon. As long as Bear Laker is content with a conference championship every two or three years, then be happy with Mendenhall. Ute fans have higher expectations and Whittingham is the right guy to get them there. And what is with the childish name calling? This isn't what I've been taught growing up. Perhaps I just answered the question, you're still growing up!

Both of them.
Floyd Johnson | 8:05 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Both are well suited for their programs. Fans on both side are pleased with the coaches they have. It is notable that Bronco took over a broken program and has restructured it. However, Coach W may have accomplish the same thing in that situation.

Which coach is better? I don't know, but either can bring chips to my house for the Super Bowl.
Ernest T. Bass | 8:11 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Coach Brocno is so much more good.
Its Funny  | 8:17 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
How Cougar fans cannot do simple arithmatic.Mr "Its Funny " above states "not only did the Utes lose by more points to TCU than BYU" Well Well lets do the math . TCU 31 BYU 7 =31 point Cougar loss . TCU 55 Utah 28 = 27 point Ute loss . Since when is 27 MORE than 31??? Maybe only in Provo, in the rest of the world 31 is always more than 27 . Fact is both teams got killed by TCU
Kevin in the Terrace | 8:19 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Bronco and Kyle are great coaches, both class act guys and deserve all the credit. I hate it when I hear so much critisizm about these two coaches on the radio, or other media.
Laughing at the Ute fans | 8:28 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
TCU just handed them their worst defeat in three years (losing 55-28 on the road isn't quite as bad as losing 36-3 at home against Boise State) and all some Ute fans can blather on about is the speed of their defense?

EARTH TO UTE FANS: Your "speedy" defense just got ripped for 55 points and 549 yards against TCU. Aside from an opening-season rout of FCS team Texas State, that's the Frog's best offensive performance this season.

That's more points and yards than BYU allowed. More than Colorado State, Air Force, SMU and Virginia. Even UNLV's defense fared better against TCU than the Utes did.

If I were you, I'd pay more attention to how your vulnerable defense will play against good passing offenses like San Diego State and BYU, instead of trying to pretend that you were somehow competitive in Fort Worth last week.
Are you Serious? | 8:43 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
"But undeniably Whit is the superior coach who seems to do a much better job at coaching up to big games."

That's debatable. Kyle Whittingham has 16 losses; 7 have been by 10 points or more.

Bronco Mendenhall has 15 losses; 8 have been by 10 points or more. I don't see much difference.

Furthermore, during his career Mendenhall's teams have lost only once to teams which finished the season with a losing record; Whittingham has done it three times, including a head-scratching 27-0 shutout at the hands of a 2-10 UNLV team.

So one could say that Whit is better at getting his teams motivated for a big game, but he does a lousy job of keeping them motivated for the small ones.

Something to keep in mind with San Diego State coming to RES this week.
Kevin is right.... | 8:47 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Bronco and Kyle are both great coaches. They work hard and do the best they can for their programs. Good luck to both......but especially to Bronco on the 28th.
Ernest T. Bass | 8:51 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Coach Bornco is better than Coach Whit. I think BYU's performance against New Mexico proved that once and for all.

RE: Its Funny | 8:17 a.m. | 8:57 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
That was the point. Both teams got it handed to them by TCU, but his U fan co-workers were grasping for straws after the loss.

Coach Mendenhall and Coach Whittingham have both been outstanding. They are class acts that have done great things with their programs.

Keep up the good work, gentlemen!

BYU fans would love to have Urban Meyer as their coach. It is really hard for them to accept the fact that they will never have an Urban Meyer caliber coach.

BYU and Utah are both paying a pile of gold to their coaches.

many of us like football but think there is more to life than it ...
Matt Connelly | 9:18 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Yes, hats off to both these outstanding coaches. With all due respect to Whittingham, I believe Mendenhall has the more difficult job. Recruiting excellent athletes to a school that has a strict honor code, is 98% Mormon, has super high academic standards, a schedule-disrupting missionary program, and a location (Provo) that is about as racially un-diverse as you can find is incredibly difficult. Mendenhall has risen to the challenge, and his record proves it. We're lucky to have both Mendenhall and Whittingham coaching in this state. Let's be sure to give them the right incentives to keep them around.

Oh, and let's also hope that TCU's Gary Patterson sticks in the league! This is the first time in my life that I've seen back-to-back years that multiple conference games really matter on the national scene. Awesome!
Basically | 9:22 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Utah beat Bama in a major bowl . YBU lost to Arizona in the 2 nd home of the Cougars the Vegas bowl . That would be the difference, that and Whit does not talk like an 83 year old General Authority like Bronco does
bleedred | 9:24 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Re: check the facts
Whitt didn't just step into something Urban built, Urban came in won with coach Mac's players and left. Coach Whitt had to rebuild almost an entire coaching staff. Utah lost most of the starters on both sides of the ball and Whitt didn't have much behind the starters that left, so CHECK THE FACTS.
Anonymous | 9:30 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
This article conveniently omits the name of the best hire in 2005 - Urban Myer at Florida who has won 2 national championships. While Coach Mendenhall and Coach Whittingham were good hires, has to remain the story of the 2005
re: Check the facts | 9:32 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Clearly you did not do what your title suggests. Do you know what was left when Urban left? A freshman QB, and that's about it. Between the seniors that graduated, and the early NFL entrees, and having to replace both coordinators, the cupboard was pretty bare when Whit took the reigns.

And what about expectations for each as they took over? Kyle took over a school that had just become the first BCS busters. While Bronco took over a school coming off 3 straight losing seasons. All Bronco had to do was win more games than he lost, while Kyle had to try and live up to Urban.

They both had their work cutout for them, and have both done very well.
Too bad | 9:39 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
That the fans are not as classy as the two coaches.
Both coaches have been on the national radar, and both got beat by a very excellent TCU team. Each coach is having success in his program. Because of these 3 great coaches in the MWC, I believe the league is better than it has ever been. And whoever said that 50 percent of the teams have to lose every week, is right on. And now Southern Cal and Notre Dame are among them. Wow.
Unfortunately the lame-brained fans in just Utah can't let IT go.
