We all knew this was coming. Maybe Andy Ludwig will be available, no?
Utef@n | 12:40 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
I nominate Robert Anae.
Re: Utef@n | 12:54 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
As a cougar fan, I agree. Anae's predictability can go elsewhere.

Bring Him back to Utah where he he excelled.
This won't help UNLV | 1:21 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
when they have an interim AD. So let me get this straight: They are going to hire an AD and then immediately expect him to find a good football coach before the good ones are taken (the coach recruiting season will begin as soon as the last regular season games are done, if it hasn't begun already).

Yeah right. What will happen is the new AD will take whoever is left that still wants to come to UNLV and hire a bad coach. Here's one Cougar fan sad to see UNLV fall farther into mediocrity in the coming years.
Not surprised | 1:24 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
I don't think any u of u spawn has been successful as a head coach. Urban Meyer doesn't count since he was never part of the program before being hired as HC and simply saw an opportunity to use utah as a stepping stone to a better job.

On the other hand, some successful coaching material has emerged from BYU over the years: Mike Holmgren, Andy Reid, more recently Steve Sarkesian, and...oh yeah, Kyle Whittingham. There are also a few other former BYU players currently helping teach utah how to play football. You're welcome.

Wasn't one of those wins a shutout pitched against the University of Utah, the greatest team in the world?
Too Bad : | 1:37 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
I hate to see anyone get the pink-slip, but that is the reality of coaching. Ya win-sum, ya lose sum. Didn't have enough of the wins.
Whit <> Sanford | 1:59 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
should swap
Too Bad | 2:01 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
UNLV has always been borderline in FOOTBALL....

Sanford lacked the help to make it happen....probably his own fault for being spread to thin......Advice to UNLV? Anyone but a Ute coach!
UNLV... | 2:33 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
"UNLV has always been borderline in FOOTBALL...."

If, by borderline, you mean between mediocre and terrible, you'd be right.

UNLV has never taken any pride in their football program and the fans in Las Vegas couldn't care less about the football team.

Las Vegas is like Los Angeles, basketball is the only game in town.

So why are the Rebels even bothering to change coaches?

It would be nice if UNLV football actually became successful enough in football to warrant building a decent stadium, but that's unlikely to happen, even if they were to bring in Urban Meyer.
It doesn't matter | 2:54 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
UNLV this year; Wyoming, San Diego St., and New Mexico last year. Coaches are going to come and go at these programs. I expect Colorado St. will be looking for a new coach in the next couple of years.
I wonder if these programs can ever be successful. The only MWC programs that matter are BYU, Utah, TCU, and sometimes Air Force. Over the years the only times these lesser programs that have had mediocre success was Colorado St. under Lubick and New Mexico under Rocky Long. I guess it is nice to have some conference cupcakes on your schedule but it is going to hurt TCU's BCS run this year. In football, the MWC will never get stronger from within it may have to invite a strong program to join (Boise St?).
Another ute | 3:02 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009

heres the man | 3:11 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
ROCKY LONG! Hire him right now! Pay him what he wants. It will happen!
Wow | 3:51 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
So many zoobs whine that Utah fans only come to their articles to trash talk BYU; complaining about all the "hatred". Well here is an article about UNLV and four of 14 comments are zoobs bashing on Utah.
NEW OC | 3:54 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
and the new offensive coordinator at the University of Utah is Mike Sanford. At least it should be.
RE: Not Surprised | 4:04 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
It's sad that your grasping at such weak points to defend your program Down South. Mike Holmgren played for USC, but he was an assistant for you like A-Rod and Sitaki are ours. It's funny how the coaches you mentioned didn't want to coach at the TDS.

Anyway to counter, Utah also produced Head Coaches in George Seifert (49ers Super Bowl Champ and former player at Utah) and Jim Fassel (Giants HC and former Utah Coach), both have gone to the Superbowl. And even though he's not a head coach Norm Chow played for the Utes; and Lavell Edwards is a University of Utah alum.
Though its a silly arguement...you're welcome back.

As for Sanford, you can't argue with the success he had at Utah(1 loss in 2 seasons), though I think it was more he was fortunate to be attached to a great program at the right time.
Take Anae | 4:20 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
He couldn't do much worse than he did as OC for the Y. UNLV would be the best place for uninspiring, uncreative and in many cases an unproductive offense. Yes, I know there were flashes of brilliance, but I chalk that up to the players making plays rather than Anae's creativity.

Give him a shot at being the head-cheese at UNLV!
Uh | 4:43 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
LaVell played for the Aggies; Siefert coached for them;As for UNLV, I nominate Norm Chow. He wants a head coach job and UNLV would be lucky to get him.
As for Sanford, he should go to Aggie-land to rejoin Gary. They were great together at the U. I hope the Ags continue to improve. I see a big difference already and that's without the manpower they need. Gary will turn that program around.
BYU fans kill me | 5:09 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
For years they wanted Norm Chow's head chopped off, and then he goes on to great success elsewhere. Anae is getting the same treatment from the BYU fans; hence, anyone close to the Anae camp should take this as a great and telling omen.

Anae for head coach at UNLV--the zoobs have done it again.
@ BYU fans... | 6:37 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Outside of USC, where exactly has Chow had GREAT success? How's the offense at UCLA these days? Don't see a lot of productivity there and he's had some fantastic athletes to build an offense around. He lost his creativity as well...
Wayne Rout | 6:53 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Norm was predictable. Anae is predictable. Because BYU can't recruit "speed" they have to be smarter, this means a creative dynamic offense. The Crowton offense with Doman and Staley may have been the best we have seen, at least for 10 games. BYU with a more mobile QB and the same sort of attack might be impressive again.
Hire Chris Petersen | 7:11 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Boise's coach would be a good hire. It would definitely be a step up from where he's at now.
Chow | 7:14 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
coached Phillip Rivers at NC State. According to Rivers he learned a lot and became better. NC State also had one of its best seasons in years that year. So I'll go with that. I don't think he was too bad at BYU either and his grade at UCLA is incomplete.
Thinking Outside the Box | 7:20 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
There is a guy named Steve Clark who is the offensive coordinator at Southern Utah. He is a genius, he is enthusiastic, he is relatively young. Of course there are a lot of good coaches like Steve Clark out there all over the place. It is easy to go for the big name (like when UNLV brought in John Robinson--a decent but uninspired choice). But how about going the other direction, bring in someone hardly anyone has heard of but a person that really knows football, can relate to young people and is HUNGRY to do the job!
Rocky Long | 7:24 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Rocky Long should be the man to take the UNLV job. He overachieved for years at New Mexico, and would be right at home taking over another MWC team.

He could get some better talent at UNLV and probably turn the team into a regular bowl qualifer and an occassional conference contender.

Most importantly, he has proven head coaching experience. Hiring a good coordinator is risky - you never really know how good of a head coach they will be.

With Rocky Long, UNLV would know they were getting somebody qualified, with a successful resume at a similar institution.
$$$ | 7:34 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
The problem that UNLV has is money. They don't have the cash to put down on a Norm Chow or a Rocky Long. I think they need to take crazy stab at grabbing a great high school coach w/ crazy wins and brilliant strategy, give him the job on a year-to-year basis, and take the extra money to try and get some more talented players and focus on recruiting. The way things have been in Vegas can't get much worse, why not take the Vegas way out and go all-in on a long shot?
HIRED TO BE FIRED | 7:41 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
The UNLV position is a classic stepping stone.

You just have to realize that the steps might lead downward to oblivion.

However, there will always be someone, somewhere, who wants an HC position;

At least, that is what UNLV is hoping, from here going forward.

so bad, that they will subject themselves to public ridicule
Please Kyle | 7:48 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Hire him back!
High School Coach? | 8:06 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
You all remember Gerry Faust, one of the greatest high school coaches ever at Moeller HS in Ohio. He was hired by Notre Dame in the 1980's, prior to Lou Holtz. Let's just Holtz was hired because it didn't work out too well. Going straight from HS to college head coaching doesn't work.

Go with somebody like a Steve Clark mentioned above who has coached under Urban Meyer at Utah, Mendenhall at BYU and moved up the chain at SUU. I think he would look at UNLV as the dream job rather than just a stepping stone. UNLV needs a long term solution not just someone using the job as a means to an end or a retread like Robinson was or basically what Norm Chow would be at this stage of his career.
$$$ | 11:53 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Re: High School Coach?

Yes, but UNLV is no Notre Dame. Notre Dame came off of having a National Championship caliber coach. UNLV has little to lose from a 4-8 or 5-7 season.
Come Back... | 5:13 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
He should be back at the U as OC, no question about it...Just do it and get it over with!

Chris Petersen? | 8:04 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Why would Coach Pete want to leave BSU for 4-7 UNLV? How would that be a step up???

Only a BYU fan could write something so absurd...
To UNLV AD | 11:34 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009

Bring Bronco to your school.
UNLV | 11:41 a.m. Nov. 17, 2009

should hire Bronco.
Bronco will take UNLV to bowl game --and they don't have to leave town for it.
UNLV still loses to TCU and Utah though.
But they may win BYU game once in a while, since BYU may lose game once in a while when Bronco is a coach in the game.
WOW | 12:12 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Some really nasty mean spirited comments on here. You must be wonderful to be around. If someone says it is black, you say it is white, if they say it is up you say it is down. Wonder you can stand to be around yourself? Get a life please and make it better for the eople around you.
re: re: Not Surprised | 1:16 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
LaVell Edwards played his football at USU. He then earned his Masters at the U but did not play or coach there.

So please explain to all of us how earning his masters at the U where he did not even play or coach football somehow qualifies him as a player or coaching product of the U as you have presumed or implied??? After all, that's what the original post was about: players or assistants who came out of BYU and became head coaches.

Yep, next time do some research before u post a comment. But thanks for playing.

...He then earned his Masters at the U but did not play or coach there...
Well...:
1) Lavell was successful as a coach for BYU? Most Utes are successful when they join the workforce after graduation. Lavell is no difference.
2) Lavell was intelligent in football X/O. To be a Ute, one has to have a brain. Lavell is no difference.
3) Lavell was respected by all. Most Utes are respected by the colleagues in their work place(s). Lavell is no difference.
4) Lavell was/is loved by all --including those who played against him. Most Utes are loved even by those who are inferior to us. Lavell is no difference.
Any questions, please call 1-800-UtesNo1
BYU fans kill me | 3:08 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
Outside of BYU, what has Chow done? Are you kidding me? That's my whole point summed up in one prevailing Zoobs thought: BYU fans' thoughts don't matter OUTSIDE of Utah.

Chow's is a bigtime player in the Coaching scene. His only drawback was that he waited for the HC job at BYU and didn't get it--I WONDER WHY?

Anae, if he is offered the job, should take it; frankly, he should take any job that is substantially better than BYU.

Why? Because he could possible traverse the same path as Chow and become older and older waiting for something that will never come his way. Again, I WONDER WHY?

Yet, it can't all be racial. Look at what happened to Ken Schmidt. DC for all those years, and then run out of Provo like he did nothing for the program.

Anae, if in the running for the job, should take the UNLV job. If not, he should be looking to move on to greener pastures. If he's being compared to his mentor Chow--millions are waiting to be earned OUTSIDE of BYU.

UNLV Job | 5:20 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
This job should attract some fairly big names.

Vegas can draw a lot of talent from California.

Besides the dead of summer the weather is good.

And of course, there is always the buffets...

Re:UNLV Job | 5:20 p.m. | 6:40 p.m. Nov. 17, 2009
...And of course, there is always the buffets...

now I understand why BYU draw lots of fans to Las Vegas Bowl every year.

I like buffets too...:)
