We are proud of our band. They went to share their message about The Greatest Generation and to honor our heroes--including Heather. They accomplished that and came home with the Esprit de Corps Award given to one band at each Grand Nationals competition that best exemplifies the best qualities of what the Bands of America program is all about. Way to go!
That's a "glass half empty" title to your article, considering all that this outstanding high school band has accomplished. Props for all of their hard work and determinaiton, in spite of their sadness and grief at the tragic loss of their leader.
Well, there goes a quarter million dollars that could have saved several thousand lives in Asia. I wonder what it would take for a charity to get $250k in less than two days? We make weird choices.
This was not just a charity donation. That investment will pay dividends in the community for generations to come. I have been involved with marching band as a participant, parent and grandparent since the mid sixties and have seen the dividends across the years.
We do make choices: like trying to undermine others' accomplishments. Cynic, please tell us which specific charity in Asia you donated to last month.
I agree that the headline could have been better. How about "AF Band places 14th in Nation"?
That's higher than BYU or Utah, and the rank is from a playoff system.
14th in the freaking nation! Go Cavemen!
@Choices Whether I (or you) donated to charity last month is perfectly irrelevant. I applaud the band for its determination, I don't mean to undermine their accomplishment, and I'm sure it had a positive impact on all who participated. The relevant question is: if it were up to you to allocate $250k, would you feed starving children or send a band on a trip?
(For the record I donate 10% of my income to charity, last month and every month. And no, not to a "charity" that builds pretty temples with my money.)
