Cougars, please get ready for AFA. They have surprised good teams before and could sneak up on BYU. Prepare well and bring your A game like you did at Wyo.
G | 8:09 p.m. Nov. 15, 2009
The game is broadcast on CBS CS, not the mtn
I'm not worried | 8:42 p.m. Nov. 15, 2009
Air Force is a solid team. Last year, we beat them at AF when we had a worse team. Plus, their showing against the Utes won't translate to what will happen in Provo (see Wyoming).

Question | 9:13 p.m. Nov. 15, 2009
I wonder which BYU team will come out to play Saturday. If it's the team that showed up yesterday, I'm afraid BYU will get beat. Why are they so up and down for different games? It just seems like there is a lack of consistency in their drive/intensity each game. Is it coaching or preperation or what could be the difference?
You nailed it | 9:37 p.m. Nov. 15, 2009
BYU has been up and down under the watch of Bronco. IF I hear them say "its all about execution" one more time i'm going to puke. Its about intensity and getting up for every game. The arrogance and lack of preparation can only be laid at the feet of the coaching staff. As a BYU fan, its time for this team to start planing grown up football.
Houston Cougar | 9:49 p.m. Nov. 15, 2009
Why does BYU need to wake up every week to realize they have a game? TCU is always awake. Utah is awake most of the time.

BYU woke up after TCU, then went to sleep again after Wyoming. All was well. That's on the coaching. Somnambulant BYU.
Re: You nailed it | 9:37 p.m.  | 9:57 p.m. Nov. 15, 2009
Start planning? That would mean Bronco has to work.
lay off | 10:36 p.m. Nov. 15, 2009
a win is a win. New Mexico is getting better and played a lot better then they have this past season.
Bronco does a great job getting his team ready each and every week. TCU and FSU are good teams.
Time to get a new coach | 10:38 p.m. Nov. 15, 2009
I'm done with all the Bronco bumper stickers. Done with the dumb motivational statements. Reality after a few seasons is that Bronco is a poor coach ..just like Crowton and has worn out his welcome in Provo. Fans EXPECT a team to place winning as the #1 priority but that is hard to do when you have a coach that puts winning as his #4 priority. You can bet TCU doesn't have winning #4. Or Utah for that matter.
Chill | 11:42 p.m. Nov. 15, 2009
Hey, "Time to get a new coach". Chill! Sounds like you need something else in your life to think about.

I hope you're as good at your job as you expect Bronco to be at his. Give us all your work address and let us come and scrutinize.

People, wake up | 11:50 p.m. Nov. 15, 2009
For all you Bronco bashers -- have you forgotten about Crowton? Things could be a lot worse.
People calling for Bronco's head | 12:07 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Pipe down! He's had three straight 10 win season and is on track for his 4th. That's not shabby coaching if you ask me. NO ONE can win every game and if you think they can then you don't know football. Period. Go Cougars.
Re. Time to get a new coach | 12:15 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Wow you just made one of the dumbest comments I've heard yet. Fire Bronco???? Are you serious?? BYU IS 8-2. Every team has a bad game once in a while. Enjoy the ride. Enjoy the wins. BYU is ranked, and having a successful season. Bronco is an excellent coach. People like you need a reality check. Don't be so emotional and irrational. Enjoy the ride!
Perspective | 12:20 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
A little perspective is not a bad thing. Notice the Cougar's won loss record since 1986...

2006-2009 = 40-9
2002-2005 = 20-27
1998-2001 = 35-22
1994-1997 = 37-13
1990-1993 = 32-17-2
1986-1989 = 36-16

Some people struggle to appreciate a good thing while they've got it. In my perspective we ought to enjoy the ride.
Question--still asking | 12:38 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
I am still asking the same question. Why are they so up and down for different games? It just seems like there is a lack of consistency in their drive/intensity each game. What needs to be done so the winning intensity is more consistent? Some say it is not Bronco. Fine, but what is it then?

I love BYU and have my whole life and will continue to--win or lose. But why is that different teams show up each week?

AK Cougar | 1:26 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
RE: Time to get a new coach.

You need a new team. BYU is not it for you. Please go gripe about Utah or Utah State or Boise State. Your expecttions are not realistic.

If BYU was undefeated you would not be satisfied. You would want BYU to score 100 pts. every game. Or you would want the defense hold the other team to zero. If they did that, then you would want fewer first downs recorded by the other team. Or more punts run back for touchdowns. Or, more style points, or ....

You must be really hurting with little to like in your life. Please find some somewhere, but griping about BYU football team and the coaching staff is NOT where you will find any happiness.

May be you could take up solitaire.

Bronco simply happens to be the best person for the coching job at BYU football since Lavell.

Go Cougars. Get ready to roll AFA.
RE: Perspective | 1:30 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
I completely agree. The Cougars are good and have been very successful under Bronco. I appreciate the way Bronco and his staff have coached the team and the way that the players have performed and "executed." Cougar fans crave more... we want perfect seasons like the Utes, Broncos, and Horned Frogs. But getting rid of Bronco Mendenhall is not the answer. And... if we do get that perfect season, don't be surprised to see Bronco move on to a bigger name school. (I won't be surprised to see Patterson leave TCU after this year - it's happened before... can you say Urban Meyer?)

It's funny how the Colorado writer called BYU atrocious against good competition. I seem to remember the "atrocious" Cougars beating a pretty good Oklahoma team to start the season. AFA didn't exactly look "stellar" against Wyoming (AFA 10 - Wyo 0.) And... I haven't seen the Falcons beat anyone yet that was near the quality of the teams that BYU lost to (TCU ... falcons lost / AFA hasn't beat anyone as good as Florida State this year.)
Anonymous | 1:34 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
I believe our neighbors to the north have had two undefeated seasons. Brothers it is time for a change we cannot live in their shadow anymore.
Anonymous | 3:36 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
I'll take 10-2 every season. I just don't think we can ever go undefeated....Max Hall is a good QB, but not great..BYU needs a great QB to lead them..
Kyle | 5:34 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Forget Air Force. BYU will kill them.

The next BIG GAME for BYU is UTAH... Utah was not destroyed by TCU like BYU was... UTES will demolish BYU AGAIN!! Cougars will eat Ute dust.

Guarantee UTAH VICTORY OVER BYU.

Jake | 6:07 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009

GET READY FOR UTAH!

GO UTES!

BEAT THE COUGS!

Levin | 7:08 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Who in the past few years has beat BYU with their running game? QBs that are a legitimate running and throwing threat. As noted in the article, they have stopped the pure running game all year. The D-line and linebackers are just fine. The problems come when they have to cover the weakness of the secondary.

This really is great, though, to end the regular season with AFA and Utah, who are IMO BYUs greatest rivals.
Re: Time for a new coach | 7:50 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
My friend; don't you realize that as a fan of BYU, you aren't allowed to critique or call for change? You aren't allowed to question coaches decisions or players efforts? You certainly aren't allowed to boo or have any negative feelings about what's going on. Be HAPPY with the 10 win seasons, pay no attention that 99% of those wins come against the bottom feeders of college football, at least they are wins and they are doing the best that they can. As a BYU fan; if you want or expect more than that from them then you must be a miserable human being and you should take your fandom somewhere else. Those are the conditions, accept them or leave!
Signed,
A happy blue goggle wearing "true" BYU fan
I Really Hate | 8:19 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
BYU, but if I were a BYU fan Bronco would NEED TO GO . Bronco has no clue how to motivate a team for a big game(Sorry but the Sooners arent that good this year)BYU will NEVER be in a BCS game as long as Bronco is the coach. Never.
re: I'm not worried | 8:22 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
What about comparing the scores with mighty 0-10 New Mexico!

Freshman getting his first start throttles NM, while BYU escapes NM because their kicker missed 10 points.

Not enough fire in the gut | 8:39 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
I am beginning to focus on a fact of life in BYU football which is likely to play a huge role in how motivated our Cougars are for every opening kick-off. A factor btw which Bronco may not be able to control. Just how fired up do you or I imagine any RM football player REALLY gets by the junior or senior year of his career? Just how pumped about football can you imagine a BYU senior can muster when he is married given the dynamics which marriage places upon his daily life? How motivated with energy for the game is the BYU senior who is married, has a child, AND he still has to be getting ready for graduation, planning for graduate school etc. etc. etc. I am not suggesting ALL upper-classmen on the squad are not coping well with the demands and priorities of school, marriage, child(ren), graduation, and graduate school. But maybe these factors are weighing heavy both physically and mentally. If even a handful of key players are not coping well, this feeling could spread through to other players. Few will play for $$$. Respect their priorities in life.
Off Base | 8:48 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
The problem isn't Max Hall, or Bronco. It is defense. The defense of this team is horrible. They need to put a focus on recruiting defensive players. If they can put a half decent defense on the field they will go undefeated. Defense, defense, defense!!!
That is the difference between BYU and Utah. Utah wins a lot of games with a great defense and mediocre QB's at best. Max Hall is called on to win each and every game by himself, while Utah's QB's are asked to manage every game.
If I had my choice I would pick letting the defense win every game. I hate leaving it up to the offense.
Delusional fans | 8:49 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Utah was not destroyed by TCU like BYU was? Did you watch both games? At what point did you think that Utah was competing in that game? If it wasn't for defensive penalties against TCU and circus catches from David Reed it would have been about a 48 point difference. As far as New Mexico goes, you throw Riley Nelson in there and the team gets pumped up to give the kid a win in his first start. In other words it wasn't Wynn who won the New Mexico game. As far as Bronco being run off goes - that would be about the most irresponsible thing BYU could do. I actually heard some Utah fan complaining because Utah wasn't going to finish in the top ten season as if that was an expectation every year. Fan's just get delusional when they taste a piece of the pie. The BYU football program is in a far better position than probably ever before and will have many good and great years to come. We need to learn to be happy with what we've got before its gone.
Bronco's BCS run is coming | 8:53 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
I can see the headline now: Top25 school year after year dismisses coach. And then future headlines: BYU wishes they had Bronco back whose years as coach were better than LaVell's early years.

BYU needs to prove it hasn't peaked and get over the next hump, but getting rid of a coach that gets you 10 wins a season and 2 conference titles in the last 4 years is a bad joke and a big mistake. The majority of us won't let that kind of bad thinking rule the day. It's still the best program in the state.

Some ute fans were calling for Whit's head in years when he had injured players, who then went on Whit's only BCS run as head coach. The same ute fans lead the calls for how bad they think Bronco is. Let's get rid of poor-sport rival fans and any of our own fans who listen to that junk.

Or we could do like New Mexico (Rocky Long would not be winless if UNM had him) and get rid of the best coach option available to us. Our OC needs to get with it.
BYU Grad | 8:59 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
I blame Coach Mendenhall and his predictable offense for the terrible showing against New Mexico. Hopefully, this will be a wake-up call and the Coach will mix it up a little bit for Air Force.
Thank you | 9:00 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
"not enough fire in the gut" maybe that is part of what the problem. You're right when you say they are older and have more responsibilities.

I just get frustrated as a fan. I go to all the home games, all pumped up and I feel the energy from the crowd, but sometimes it seems the cougars themselves aren't as up for the games as the fans are. And as the games get going, the crowd feeds off the energy of the players--which sometimes sizzles out. We are there for them. I just want to see Bronco show some energy and emotion--I think it would serve the team well. I understand he wants to portray that he is stable and consistant, but can't help but wonder if he showed some emotion how that could rub off onto the players/staff.

Don't get me wrong--Brono has done some amazing things. 10-2 is a great. But why settle? I really feel like we should be 11-1 and some of our wins should have been be stronger more convincing wins. Go COUGARS!
unbelievable | 9:15 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Most all these comments are unbelievable stupid. Where do you people come from? If you don't like BYU, don't watch them. Why in the world would a Utah fan keep reading and commenting on a BYU page?
I admit I can't stand Utah, so I do not go to a Utah sight and rag on them. Most of you must have very high blood pressure. Why do you get so personal about a game. You do know that anyone who really counts does not read these comments don't you.
Unbelievable.
Chill Coug fans | 9:20 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Our BCS run is coming, just be patient. Bronco is the best option we have at this school and the inherent challenges that come with coaching at a church-owned school. At least we don't have football players robbing convenience stores (Tennessee). Firing Bronco right now would be an embarrassment to the school; most schools would kill for 10-2 seasons. How come nobody is calling for Whit’s head? Some BYU fans wanted to fire Bronco on the spot after the TCU loss. Bronco and the Cougs have a ways to go, but their slowly getting there, at this point, Bronco looks better than Lavell did in his first five years, so chill out a little bit.

As for Ute fans, you hammered BYU fans after their losses to FSU and TCU, don't get your undies in a bunch just because BYU fans are giving it back to you a little bit. BYU and Utah are good teams, TCU is a JUGGERNAUGHT! Awesome match-ups coming over the next five years between these three teams.
Utah was not destroyed | 9:21 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
like BYU was? With 8 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter the score was 35-7. What game were you watching?

The Utes did a nice job in the JV game, after the real fighting was over. TCU could have scored 70.
re: Utah was not destroyed | 9:35 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
55-28 = 27
38-7 = 31

Someone might need to check my math, but I think those are correct.

A freshman QB for Utah put up 28 points on the road against TCU. That's 14 more points than "Heisman" Hall has put up against them, the last 2 years!

Did you watch the game? TCU scored 2 TD's in the last 12 minutes. And still were blitzing with their 1st string defense when Utah scored with 2:00 left. They never took their foot off the pedal, as Gary Patterson spoke about after the game. Saying he wanted as many style points as he could get.
Thank you Dave Ramsey! | 9:46 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Thank you SO MUCH for calling BYU overrated and vulnerable! I hope the team gets to hear what you said to help get them FIRED UP and READY TO PLAY. They seem to do a lot better when they get dissed by the media, so thank you thank you thank you!!!!!

GO COUGARS!!!!!!!!
I agree | 9:51 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
with Bronco in every facet. I happened to be visiting Provo from Vegas, taking a tour of the football facilities, and snuck my head into his office. I noticed a picture of Captain Moroni, and of the First Presidency. I believe he can win a National Championship. Will he? Who knows. I know that he runs a quality program and helps prepare men for life. It would be interesting to follow his players for 10 years and see where the majority of them end up, and then to compare that to other schools (uhhh; like the rocket science university up north) and see where their players end up. Bronco: keep up the good work. If 10-3 is what we get, and you help keep producing winners on and off of the field, I got your back.
clueless gnats | 9:54 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
gotta laugh at the cluelessness of some "BYU fans" calling for a new coach

most of the so-called "BYU fans" are really just Utah trolls, and the few who are actually BYU fans are just as clueless

here's a real world lesson:

BYU's athletic department and administration couldn't care less what the clueless little gnats on these blogs think.

Like most universities, the fans that the university really cares about are the deep-pocketed boosters, who so far are very pleased with what Bronco is building.

Mendenhall has done a great job of rebuilding not only the quality of the football program, but the reputation of the football program.

A 75% winning percentage, 2 undefeated MWC championships, 2-2 in bowls, 2-2 versus Utah, 3 straight 10+ win seasons, 3 straight Top 25 finishes in his first 5 years.

Plus, BYU has their strongest recruiting class ever coming in next season.

The only thing Bronco hasn't done yet is to get BYU into a BCS game.

That will come.

It took LaVell 12 years to win a National Championship, but the run to the NC began in earnest in LaVell's 7th year, 1979.
A Simple Question | 9:56 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
WHY DOESN'T BYU RUN THE BALL?
ATC | 9:57 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
I think people aren't giving New Mexico enough credit. I think this was a trap game for BYU and they didn't prepare for it like they should have, but New Mexico hasn't won a game and it is toward the end of the season, and they are desperate. This was a huge game for them and they really wanted to win, and they jumped at the oppertunity. Yes BYU could have played better, but I think it was New Mexico's determination to win a game this season that lead to their good perfomance
McKay | 10:20 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
I'm certainly not calling for Broncos head; however these "self proclaimed" true fans who are telling any BYU fan who may be disgruntled or frustrated with the team/coaches that they should leave or find a new team need to cheer for need to take a step back as well. You are entitled to your opinion just as the fan who may not like everything that is going on with the Y program. Just because you may be happy with and buying into everything that Bronco does, does not make you more of a fan or give you some right to tell other fans to find a new team. Get over yourselves already.
Face It | 10:29 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Ute and Cougar fans, TCU destroyed BOTH teams. I gotta laugh at the " they only beat us by 25" or "We were in the game with 5 minutes left in the 1st Quarter" stuff.. BYU fans are delusional if they think Bronco " We have to look at the positives from the Fla St loss" Mendenhall will ever be in a BCS game . BYU cannot and does not beat good teams .Heck Step and Fetch they have trouble with the Lobos. As for the dolt who said "BYU is still the best program in the state " must have somehow missed Utah's 2 recent undefeated seasons and BCS WINS. BYU was the top team under LaVell NOT Bronco.
Clovis Fan | 10:49 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Do any of you BYU winers realize that it is extremely difficult to go undeafeated. You not only have to be exceptionally good, but you have to have some luck as well. Or you can follow the bogus Boise State model and schedule only one decent team at the begining of the season so you can prepare all summer. Then hire a PR firm to do your wining for you when you don't get the repsect you think you deserve. It is also not easy to have a one or two or three loss season! Yes we were all very dissappointed that we are not in the BCS race, but to say we need to get rid of Bronco is grounds to take away your BYU fan club card. Cast you mind back a few years!! With Bronco we have a man that represents BYU the way it should be represented. We will also have a competitive team every year, and we will breakthrough to the BCS in time. I fully support Bronco in every way and only hope he stays at BYU for a very long time.
Frustrated UTE | 10:51 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Hey all you frustrated Utah Fans... Don't you have your own message board? I guess you always have to come to this board to bash BYU because you are jealous of who BYU really is. A Class Team with a Class Coach. Yea they are a football team, but they really do represent more than just football. As I read your posts, it appears to me that you are all a bunch of want to be BYU fans deep down and are just kicking yourselves that you are not.
What Will It Take  | 10:54 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
for BYU fans to wake up and smell the Coffee er Postum. I see the BYU fans still thinking "we are the best program in the state" What barometer are you using to justify such a comment? or the "New Mexico was "trap game" What does that even mean "trap game"? I guess a loss to Air Force and another to the Utes may change your minds. Bronco is a football coach folks not a General Authority and needs to go somewhere else with his " The Bright side of the 30 point loss" blah blah blah stuff.
UTES ARE KINGS OF UTAH | 11:11 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009

BYU will be destroyed by the UTES again!

JBH | 11:13 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Air Force will be tough... really tough. If the Cougs show up like they did for NM they'll be beaten.

In fact, I wonder if this won't be a tougher game than vs. Utah. Utah looked awful Saturday night against TCU. Anyone who saw the game can't call that anything but a pasting, and at least as bad as BYU got from the Frogs. It will be a good, close game -- as always -- with the Utes. After their inept showing this weekend, I think there isn't a lot to fear from them.

Oh, and TCU is a legitimate title contender; we're lucky to have them in the conference, truthfully.
Sam | 11:26 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009

UTES will dominate Cougars in every facet of the game.

Utes are bigger, faster, stronger, smarter.

Utes 35 - BYU 10.

Oddman | 11:29 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Perhaps the greatest thing about college football is the unpredictability of each matchup. Depth at key positions, being keyed up for opponents that are rivals or who are rated higher in various polls, nagging injuries, key injuries at the beginning of the season, food poisoning, flu, maritial problems, grades, etc., all factor into game day performance. I love college football! Go Utes! Go BYU! Go TCU! Go Boise State! I've had innumerable joys watching you all.
Tex coug | 11:32 a.m. Nov. 16, 2009
We are 8-2 and in sight of our 4th straight double digit win season...something that has program. The more I read this board the more I am convinced that many boarders here have no capability to see things in context.

If Peyton Manning retired from the Colts and played college ball for BYU, many on this site would complain that he lacks mobility and can't really throw the deep ball.

If Adrian Peterson joined the Cougars, many would complain that he is injury prone and lacks the patience to let his blocks set up.

If Deion Sanders appeared as a Cougar cornerback, many on this board would complain that he is soft against the run and can't tackle.

If Bill Bellichek became BYU's head coach, boarders would complain that he lacks media savvy, and disrespects the fans.

I am amazed at the arrows shot at our players, coaches and administrators from the experts on this board. Let’s quit the negativity.

"Never get into an argument with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience."
