This article seems a bit far fetched. Why would anyone walk into the mission home to kill President Nelson in this foreign country. How would they even know who he is. It sounds like some deranged person from off the street just taking advantage of the moment.

From the article,

"Sister Nelson said the attempted robbery and abduction was a sobering experience that confirms that "life is a spook alley".

Poor choice of words.

I don't believe that, up to this point, there has been any indication this was anything more then an attempt to rob and/or extort money out of "rich Americans". Sis. Nelson's claim that it was the intention the whole time to kill a Mormon Apostle seems to me to be perhaps be a "faith promoting" story meant to hint at some special protection for one of God's "chosen servants".

So, what actually happened? What was involved in the "attack", and how was it prevented? In spite of the article's title, no details are given, and our kids asked if they could know how Elder Nelson and his wife were saved.

Thanks!~

I agree about the article -- I hate the way they are posting these articles. You have to click through to two or three websites before the complete article is displayed. I'm referring to the "Read the full story on MormonTimes.com." at the end of the article. You've got to click through to mormontimes.com to hopefully see the complete article. Many times the mormontimes.com site refers you to yet another website to "read the complete article". I know advertising is tough these days, but this is ridiculous. Please post the complete article here to begin with.

I am glad the thugs were thwarted. Ever since I was Baptised, I have heard of Elder Nelson and to learn this could happen, makes me upset to say the least. God does protect.

The thing that really is cool is that she felt the calm before the storm. The best thing to do in a spiritual or physical danger is to stay calm.

Interesting comments so far. Not. How are the commentors so smart and how do they know so much of what and why?

And, what is wrong with the term "spook alley". The term spook in this context is taken from the word "spooky" as in scary.

And, you ask, "what for?". Hello, MONEY

Get a life people.
Thank God | 10:43 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
Again, I'm amazed at how stupid some of you bloggers are...

I don't believe Sister Nelson was saying that their intent was specifically to assasinate Elder Nelson, rather, their intent was to kill the men (including an Apostle), then kidnap the women.

Why can't you accept the article for what it was - a terrifying event they survived to tell about. Do you really think if the Mission Pres. wife hadn't run out the door, that this event wouldn't have ended much worse than it did?

Thank God she was inspired to run and yell for help. Thank God they were watched over and protected. Thank God this wasn't a murder and kidnapping.

I for one was inspired reading about the event!

this attack was made, I am thankful that Elder Nelson and his wife were unharmed.

Bill's comment about going here and there to read the article is right on- and the reason I rarely bother.

It does not surprise me the prophet and the apostles lives are threatened all the time thus the tight security, especially with the prophet. Face it, their are just sick people out there and they want the notoriety that goes with such acts. What you think Mozambique it some perfect place where crime doesn't happen? Look at that poor British couple that is being held by pirates. It's a wicked work, watch your back.

I am thankful that Elder Nelson was protected and his wife is safe.

This whole article brings to my mind the name of another general authority who got caught embellishing the truth a bit to sell some books.Paul H. Dunn. Granted it was not Elder Nelson who made these statements but was his better half.Makes no difference. I feel sorry for the reporter who wrote this article who may have recieved personal gain from something that seems baseless to the common reader.Having lived in thrid world countries I understand these things go on all the time.Personally I thnk the story is not the whole truth.Mormon Times is looking more like a cheap tabloid.

I have NEVER had any problems with reading the rest of the story when I want to read the rest of the story...just like I never have problems finding the rest of an article in a real newspaper when it is continued on the rest of the page.

As for the story, no matter what you believe, LDS or not, there were many small miracles that happened that day that saved a lot of peoples lives.

I know that President Nelson was being watched over that day, as was everyone in that situation.

I'm just glad they're alright, no matter what anyone says, i believe that Sister Nelson wouldn't say anything that wans't true. Anyone who doesn't should think over what they are going against. Wake up, this is an APOSTLE and his wife. They're truthful people. I'm glad that Elder Nelson survived, he's on of my favorite apostles. :)

I love these articles. They make me laugh. We all need some humor in our lives once in awhile. Of course, the Nelsons are fine. We have known that for quite some time now. This is really old news.

Superstition, like all fantasy delusions, "warms the heart" and give people "comfort". Good feelings do not equal truth.

It is too bad there are so many who read these articles and yet appear to have never read the others about the terrible things that happen to good people.

No matter what anyone says about the Nelsons (with raised eyebrows) Hummmmmmmmm, You people are definitely a funny bunch. lol!

I'm glad the title of the article was changed to seem less alarmist.

Good thing they were'nt very good robbers and kidnappers. Sadly, kiddnapping is on the rise in many 3rd world countries and even in the USA. In Brazil they kidnapp the rich and ransom them for millions of dollars. They have a thing of cutting off ears and sending them to the families to raise the ransom amount.

That's why many rish Brazilions only travel by helicopter or armored car. I gues they have the largest private fleet of helicopters in the world.

Brazill has very, very wealthy and very poor living in close proximity so I guess it causes tensions they say. Be causrefull in all parts of the world.

How grateful we are that no one was murdered or kidnapped! We will continue to offer our prayers for our Church Leaders and their families, that they will be blessed and protected, and we will express our heartfelt gratitude for ALL blessings received - even our thanks for publishing this article! Thank-you!

I was there on Friday and what Sister Nelson really said was, "The attack was meant to kill a Mormon apostle, and to kidnap his wife." This is exactly what was said. I heard it with my own ears.

Why did the D-News change the quotes from Sister Nelson?
I do not doubt this story | 1:41 p.m. Nov. 15, 2009
This story is not only plausible, I'm sure it is factual. I've sent out four sons on LDS missions into four different countries. One of my sons was held up by thugs near the Bosnian border demanding his money. LDS missionaries are sometimes stereotyped as Americans and well-funded.

As one who has also traveled internationally on Church-related diplomatic tours during the Viet Nam War, and as a sister to two former mission presidents in foreign countries, I also know that international LDS missionaries must be careful. The LDS Church is known to be well-funded.

I know a woman who was detained in this same African country for several weeks. While caught in the court system, she was extorted for monetary gain. People in very poor countries will do what they feel they must do for survival.

When they are excited, such as in emergency situations, people's perceptions and experiences change dramatically. Research by psychologists on eye-witness testimony shows that people in situations like this do not see things clearly or correctly, and interpret events in wild and fantastical ways. I don't doubt this poor woman felt great fear that gave away to a "comforting" rush of adrenaline and endorphines, but to claim she could read their minds and intentions and that the "spirit" gave her supernatural powers is just silly.
