Go TCU. I will never root for the jr high on the hill.
Reasons BYU fans... | 9:53 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009

want a Froggie win:

1) BYU fans can't handle Utah success. A Utah Wynn proves that Utah football team has become superior to BYU. This can't happen!!!

2) Utah may just make it to another BCS game --if things fall right. That will be 3-0 BCS advantage over BYU. This can't happen!!!

3) A Utah Wynn tomorrow would provide Utah fans opportunity to brag about their team, especially after the blown-out BYU loss to TCU. This can't happen!!!

What a stupid article... | 9:54 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
It's not even a question. TCU all the way baby. I will probably be as disappointed if TCU loses as I was when BYU lost to TCU. MWC championship? Who cares. The MWC really means nothing anymore, Cougar fans are starved for national prominence and this year the team blew it.

It is an easy call | 9:55 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
Let's see. IF TCU wins, they will pretty much be guaranteed a BCS bowl which will bring more money to the conference, hopefully keep BSU from a BCS game, and put another nail in the BCS coffin (if that is even possible). Plus on top of that, if TCU wins then that means Utah lost and it is always a good day when Utah loses. So, although if Utah were to win BYU would have a chance at a share of a conference title, really when it comes down to it, I would rather have the money, the Yewts lose, keep BSU from a BCS bowl, and see another MWC team go to a BCS bowl than to see BYU take a share in the conference title.

No question - TCU!
A TCU win is the best for the MWC.
A BCS bid by an MWC team is what we need.
Go Frogs!!!
Frogs!!! | 10:15 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
I love my Cougars, but a TCU win benefits all MWC teams in money and prestige.
Seriously? | 10:18 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
What's the debate? Why wouldn't you want TCU to win? I hope they win the rest of their games by 40, get put in the big game with TX or FL and whip them too.

BYU kind of has a rivalry now with TCU, but its a rival team I can respect. Unlike Utah... I couldn't honestly root for them last year, eventhough they were in the same position that TCU is in now.

Go Frogs.

PS they need a new mascot costume -- worst ever.
Anonymous | 10:22 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
TCU is the best team ever in the MWC with the possibility of winning a national championship. Why would anyone ever root for the Utes???
BlueCoug | 10:22 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
Easy choice.

TCU!

Even though a Utah win would give BYU a chance at another MWC championship, a TCU win is more important because it will get the MWC that much closer to becoming an AQ BCS conference.

I usually cheer for Utah, except, of course, when they're playing my Cougs or when a Utah win is not in BYU's best interests.

Utah loss = who cares.

No Hesitation | 10:43 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
TCU all the way. 2 reasons--TCU is a great team that can represent the conference well. And second, with a TCU win and a BYU win over Utah, BYU will be ranked higher than Utah and will get a better bowl game. That is the only way to silence them
Helen C. | 10:47 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009

Cougar fans want Utah to lose more than they want a shot at a conference championship?

There are no Cougar fans, only Utah haters.
BYU BLUE | 10:47 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
Tomorrows game will really show how good Utah Utes really are. Utahs defense is really good and if they win then we (BYU) would have to go against them, and BYU is not to good when we go against Utah.

I WOULD Cheer for Utah IF... | 10:54 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
... a Ute win would be best for the Mountain West as a whole. Nope. The MWC's better off if TCU wins this one and busts the BCS, again showing that the MWC is top-level football and earning some money to split around the conference. There's even a glimmer of hope, improbable as it may be, that TCU could play for the BCS title. That's football credibility, people.

If the Utes win, the MWC gets no BCS buster, no long-term respect, and very little cash (Fiesta Bowl vs. Las Vegas Bowl, you do the math).

I'm true-blue BYU, with some good friends at the U as well. I don't normally wish to spit on the Crimson Club. But TCU needs to win this one for the conference. Period.
Searce | 10:58 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
What a fun and intelligent article. I laughed practially all the way through it.

The article mentioned at first about U of U BB. I believe the U now has lost to both Idaho teams, Idaho State last year, and now Idaho this year. I guess we'll have to use BB this year for our bragging rights, so hopefully BYU outplays the U of U, and goes past the first round in the big dance. We'll see what happens. No matter what, I am still a BYU fan and will be till I die.

In FB, I am hoping for a Frog win tomorrow and also a BYU win, the final game of the year in the regular season. Then we'll see who goes to Vegas, the Cougs or the Utes, and who goes elsewhere, both having achieved a great season w/only two losses.

I am also a Ute alumnus and a Cougar fan (have taken several classes on a post-graduate level and some classes just for interest at the Y, and I loved the atmosphere - no comparison between the U and the Y).

Re: Helen C.

Not right. BYU fans, but NOT Utah fans. There is NO way we want the Cougars to lose to Utah. We hope to trash them similar to what we did to Wyoming. I believe the comment was, "I would rather see TCU beat Utah than BYU win a conference championship, which is really no big deal".

From what I have seen on these DN boards, if the tables were turned and BYU was playing TCU, there would not be a single UTE fan that would be cheering for BYU. So, dear Helen, EAT YOUR WORDS!

p.s. Nice try on another basketball opener...
@Helen C. | 11:18 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
Um... I think you might have misunderstood the entire substance of everything that's been said here. This isn't about Utah losing so much as it's about not making our conference look ridiculous. Unbeaten TCU losing to a mediocre Utah team would make us look like a bunch of clowns out here and dash any hopes of a good finish for anyone in the conference. For what it's worth, I think you Ute fans have giggled about FSU and TCU more than anything else the past few weeks. Does that mean you're not real Ute fans?

Go frogs.
I know how you all feel | 11:19 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
As an unapologetic Ute fan, I would never cheer for BYU either...........NEVER. You could pay me a million dollars and now way no how. Yet we have so much in commom like rooting for TCU to tear you a new one. And you likewise, now, hoping beyond all logic for the Frogs to put a whoopin on the Utes. I am sure that the other teams in our conference are all pulling for TCU also. Imagine playing at the Jerry dome, 75000 people from the MWC, allwearing their school colors rooting for TCU to beat Utah. And then Utah would ruin everyones afternoon by decimating TCU, 41 to 3. Then we could start this confounding process of hating Utah even more for the rest of the year, and next. Let's send Utah back to the Big Sky conference. That would bring some justice to our liberal laced society.
Cougar fan | 11:26 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
but go TCU. Woope on those Uters!
Easy Choice | 11:29 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
There is no difficulty here. This is a no-brainer. Any BYU fan worth his salt wants TCU. This isn't about hating Utah, it's about the BCS and money. Except for Utah fans, everyone in the conference should want TCU. If Utah beats them, no MWC team goes to the BCS, Boise State will. And anyone with a brain wants to share the money and attention that TCU will bring to the conference. Besides, Utah and BSU have already been there. It's good for college football to get some new blood in there.
Utah BCS Again? | 11:33 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
Baloney. The most hilarious thing about that scenario is that most of the Utes drawing it up actually have the nerve to make fun of BYU fans for living in a dream world. News flash, Red Bubble folks: UTAH ISN'T SO GREAT THAT THE BCS WOULD INVITE THE U--EVER--UNLESS THEY WERE UNBEATEN AGAIN.

Three facts:

1) The BCS is only obligated to take one mid-major team if it qualifies. It isn't obligated to take anyone else. If it were, Boise State would have busted last year, too. No 1-loss mid-major will ever bust the BCS. Count on it. It's money.

2) The Utes play in a small media market, and its fans don't travel well enough to make the Utes a BCS Bowl money-maker. That's why Notre Dame is always in the mix every year--its fan base is huge.

3) The Utes haven't been playing well enough this year that they'll even have to worry about it much longer. The Ute offense couldn't blow away San Jose, AFA, or Wyoming.

But why worry? Tomorrow, all Utah-BCS talk stops cold.

Re: @11:18 p.m. | 11:48 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
Utah a mediocre team?

Don't look now my friend, but Utah is the 14th ranked team in the nation.

Hardly a mediocre team as recognized by the nation's college football coaches.

A Utah win over TCU would likely result in two top 10 ranked MWC teams, followed distantly by another MWC team in the high teens.

Wouldn't be a bad showing for the MWC.
Contribute  | 12:06 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
I love how BYU can sit back and bask in the BCS money that is coming their way from the power house schools in the conference (Utah and TCU). Hey BYU get up and contribute or get of the welfare train.
Digbads | 12:59 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
I want TCU to run the table. It would mean lots of money coming to the MWC.
re: contribute | 1:18 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
You might want to not speak too soon. Utah likely has two or three losses still coming this year. BYU is the reason for the BCS, hence the real reason why opportunities for the $$$ is even there. Nice try.
THEeyepatch | 1:19 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
Who cares, after we beat TCU, BYU fan will start making excuses for TCU, then have the audacity to say that the UTES got lucky or whatever. Trust me, I would never give BYU a single cheer, remember, they won a Nat' Championship back in '84, and some of you BYU fans talk about the modern era. When did the modern era begin, back in 1972 when your record against the UTES changed? Before that year, BYU had only won 6 games head to head against the UTES starting in 1922 with 4 ties. In the last 10 years the UTES are up 6-4. In the years between 1922 till now, the UTES have had 4 spans of 6+ wins in a row including a decade +1. BYU has had 2 6+ wins in a row since 1972. Utah leads, 53—33—4, BYU fan, let me know when the overall series is at least tied, till then, your still little brother. By the way, UTAH should have been in the Nat' Championship game last season and everybody knows it.

One of the worst articles ever written on deseret news, and that is saying a alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Facts are:
TCU is light years ahead of BYU and there is no way BYU beats TCU the next couple of years, barring their coach leaving or probation.

Utah might not beat BYU this year but has a much brighter future than BYU the next couple of years.

BYU has yet to beat a quality team this century, I'm serious!!!! please someone correct me!!!!!!!! Oklahoma this year is not that quality, what is their record right now?

UNLV has more victories against non conferece top 25 teams this century than BYU does.

There is no way BYU wins a MWC title in the next five years!!!!
RE: Contribute | 12:06 a.m. | 2:00 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
My dear Ute troll friend, don't be absurd. Maybe you'd better drop the superiority act before you embarrass yourself further.

BYU as a consistently nationally ranked team is hardly on any "welfare train." Your comment might be understandable and remotely reasonable if it were directed to, say, San Diego State in 2008 or the Lobos in 2009. BYU has been the most successful team year in and year out in both the WAC and MWC since the 1970s. And speaking of riding welfare trains, just where were the Utes until, say, 1994?

Let's check recent history, too. This "welfare train" nonsense is pretty big talk from a fan of a team that finished 4-7 as recently as 2000 and 5-6 in 2002. And dear me, your Utes followed up their 2004 BCS campaign by losing FIVE GAMES the next TWO SEASONS, and FOUR the season after that!

Looks to me like 2004 and 2008 were actually the surprises in an otherwise good-to-mediocre series of performances! And "Contribute," please remember this little chat while the Utes are scraping themselves off the turf in Fort Worth and Provo. Thanks!
Please be honest, Cougar fans | 2:53 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
BYU is the former Prom Queen that you see at your small town's 20-year class reunion. She's 30 pounds overweight, uses lots of makeup to hide a complexion that you now recollect was never great, and works hard to convince everyone that she is still the prettiest girl in the class. It isn't working, and she knows it's a lie.

When BYU ruled the WAC, it didn't mean much on a national scale. Cougar fans thought it did, and were angry when they didn't get appropriate love from the rest of the country. Now Utah and TCU carry the MWC banner, and BYU can't accept that their bitter rival has a more impressive resume in the last decade than BYU does.

Many Cougar fans listed above are more concerned with learning that Utah is just as mediocre as they are than possibly winning a share of the conference crown. Since conference championships don't mean that much to you, then shut your traps about how many BYU has!

Please put these in order of importance: I am a BYU fan. I am a Utah hater.

Oh, how the "mighty" have fallen...

@Searle

"No matter what, I am still a BYU fan and will be till I die."

What are you a girl? Nobody uses that expression. You must have fulfilled 1 & 2 of the questionaire. I thought that was awesome of Doug Robinson to include that. hahaha

Blacktide | 3:17 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
BTW, how is BYU ever going to SHARE a MWC title? That just boggles my mind that you guys think you have a chance at it. I can admit that BYU has had some GOOD games. Yet, BYU's offense won't get past the U's Defense. And all you BYU fiends thinking that BYU has a good chance at winning the Utes, must not know football very well. I mean, all you know is people hit each other and try to score points and THROW tortillas at the ground.

hahaha, remember when you guys did that? That was the funnies thing ever. BYU gone wild. Tortiallas. Yes I get the reference to it, but still it's hilarious. If you guys were going to the Rose Bowl, would you guys throw roses too? heheheh. oh well, it will be a COLD FUN RIVALARY.

TCU is a great team. Utah will have to play their best game of the year to even stay close. Win or loose the two real powers in the MWC will provide funds via a BCS bid to the lame team from down south. It's Ok, we don't mind helping out the weak and and needy. GO UTES
RealBYUFan | 4:38 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
Most of us don't hate the Ute team or their coaches. It's their drunken fans that we cant stand. If there were a way for the team to win but the fans lose then I would be all for it. Unfortunately, the team has to take one to keep their BYU & Mormon hating fans under control.
Mississppi Rick | 5:03 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
To @11:18pm "Utah a mediocre team?" Yes a mediocre team AND highly OVERRATED! I just wish BYU played you first so they would get a bigger jump from beating "the 14th ranked team in the land". But nevertheless, I usually root for the Utes! Today, however, I root for what's best for the conference.
TCU is a great team - Go TCU!!!!!!!!
TX Cougar | 5:14 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
As a diehard Cougar fan who lives in Texas, I want TCU to beat the daylights out of Utah. This is about busting the BCS, which I hate more than Utah. Last year, though, I cheered as Utah took down TCU. Bottomline, if BYU blows their shot at BCS glory, I don't stop cheering for the Cougars, but back the conference.
Matt Messick | 5:34 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
I hate supporting a team from TX, but I hate the BCS more. Go Lizards, Toads, Frogs or whatever the mascot is.
unranked | 5:51 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
Utah will be lucky to be ranked Monday after losing 45-0 to TCU today. So yes they are mediocre. What else can you say about a team trailing Wyoming after 3 quarters.
Big money? | 5:52 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
I buy the argument that it is better for TCU (or any other undefeated MWC team) to finish undefeated, get more pub, national stage, etc. But with the money thing...in Harmon's article he stated only $450,000 would go to each team. That's enough to cover one of the teams cook-outs with Ruby River and to cover the cost of the comp-cars. It's not like it's going to be a miluti-million dollar pay day. Sure, every little bit helps, but it's not THAT big of a deal.
Jimbo | 6:07 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
I've never understood the use of the word 'hate' when discussing the BYU-Utah rivalry. This true blue BYU fan roots for the Utes in virtually every game they play until they meet BYU, including last year when they spanked Alabama - I loved it. But in this case, I'm rooting TCU for the good of the conference. No hate involved. I love good football and a TCU win would help the anti-BCS cause. Hate is too strong of a word for things football related - but if one must use the word, perhaps applying it to the BCS would be the exception.

Go Frogs.
citizen16 | 6:29 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
The answer is easy...GO TCU!!

As a lifelong Cougar fan I'll admit that every now and then I have cheered for Utah. But not this game. With a couple of twists of luck TCU could end up I'm the national championship game which could propel the MWC to get an automatic BCS bid in the future.

And besides, it's fun to watch Utah lose.
Conveniently short memory | 6:48 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
Dear Contribute,

Did Utah turn up its nose at the money BYU brought in during the 70's and 80's when, with rare exception, Utah football was, shall we say, not formidable? Last year Utah was good. This year, Utah is lucky. Get a life.
