I was sure Sloan was going to be staked out over an ant hill and deserve it with Boozer next to him.

Well I guess this proves DWill is replaceable and the Jazz can save 17 M. LOL

What a game. congrats to the rookies, Sloan, Boozer, Brewer, AK and everyone on the team.

It will be very interesting to see what combinations Sloan plays tomorrow. He found a combo and stays with it. The rookies came thru with just enough 3s. Boozer was a beast particularly late.

I hope Sloan finds the right combos and match ups and play them. Hopefully DWill and family are fine and he is back for tomorrow.

Geaux Jeckle and Hyde Jazz.

Between the Matthews gettin it off to a sweet start, Maynor executing Jazz-ball in the middle, and Boozer shuttin down the Philly 4th Q run it proves Sloan's system isn't the problem. Execution has been.

Way to rally round the missing man, Jazz!
Darn it ... | 7:39 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009

Good game. This was team effort. Surprisingly Sloan has good game plan.

All of the dwill doubters can go away now.....I hope you feel bad in your heart. Thoughts and prayers out to the daughter of dwill and his family.

YOU KNOW WHAT THEY PLAYED TEAM BALL. and moved the ball better than they have this year, DWILL dont dribble so much pass the ball get us in the offense quicker.

He told you so.

The rookie point will prove he belongs and the Jazz will win tonight.

Good job Nostradamus AKA Santa.

What the Jazz did tonight was set in motion by D Will the other night when he noted that they lost to the team play of "Boston Ball."

On a side note, how long til Miles rolls round sayin "Trade Williams!" ???

Does anyone know the last time a Sloan coached team started two rookies?
jazzman72 | 8:54 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
That was a great team effort and encouraging win. The team still needs changes to compete in the long term though. Maynor and Matthews look like they could be some good pieces to the puzzle. Trade boozer and ak for some good players, add two talented rookies next year, and the jazz could be a true contender in a few years.
vlad | 9:00 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
Keep all your pathetics about defeat the mediocre (4/4) team till tomorrow night. Selfish Maynor's D = Boozer's D. Dees is it. Who will check Mo tomorrow? Why Coach S. plays Fes & Koufos just 2 min? Can Booz/Memo stop Shaq/Zee?
Anonymous | 9:04 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
wow, Boozer had a double-double. I'm glad he got that out of his system so we won't be watching for it for the next four weeks.
That Carlos guy | 9:07 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
All he does is score and get rebounds. Better trade him quick!
todd from santa ana | 9:13 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
Philly must have taken them lightly, for those of you who want to get back on Jerry Bandwagon....Spare us....Of course we are happy about tonight. I chalk it up to young guys being hungry and anxious to prove something. Matthews has been the suprise highlight of this season. There would be "no reason" not to keep him as the #2 guard....Congrats to Maynor, I hope he can do that more often the dishes were great. the scoring a plus. Even Snoozie came to work. SOmetimes these things happen because you are loose and easy and nothing to lose because no one expected anything special with 4 guys out.

Still with short roster, if Fez and Kous did not play it is becoming obvious they have no future with the Jazz and frankly that is tragic in the long run...

SLoan was more or less forced to play a combination such as this so do not annoint him "saint Jerry"

I said we would win 45 doing nothing else. so one of 45.

Do it tomorrow and we can really comment...

Good luck REAL tomorrow night., and all have a good evening..
Digbads | 9:21 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
Wow, the Jazz looked pretty good tonight. Quite the pleasant surprise.
It's about the players ... | 10:20 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
impacting the game. Notice the comments about running the system! Sloan didn't change any part of his offensine/defensive system. So, I guess it works (right, for those who say it is too easy to read and defend). Now that the players have shown they can run the offense and defense an work as a team there should be no complaints or excuses.
PurplePeopleEater | 10:28 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
Funny how running the offense correctly most of the time can create such an "easy" win.

Of course, Philly doesn't exactly play great defense, either.

But, still, it was fun to watch the rookies do their thing, and the Jazz as a team stick to their offense most of the time. Unselfish basketball is so beautiful!

Can't wait to see what happens against a better team Saturday.
@Todd | 10:44 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
Yes, all of the same weaknesses still exist. However, tonight Mathews was the wing that could shoot and Maynor was the back up PG who has been needed for a long time. That solved 2 big problems.

The Jazz play pretty well with the lineup of AK, Boozer and Millsap. Boozer playing C between 2 defenders improves his defense. He also was a beast on offense and boards. Millsap also on boards.

Okur was not having a good night and Sloan sat him. I give Sloan credit for that. Okur played better later and should be fresh for CLE.

Maybe Sloan will try Fez on Shaq/Z. I wonder if Millsap could guard James? AK may be needed to help at quasi point.

There could be some strange combos tomorrow before Sloan finds one that works.

Wages of Win analysis suggests that James and Shaq are playing well but most of the rest of the team is not. If the Jazz can hold them down maybe they can find a way to score enough to make it a game.

The CLE guards are better than the PHI ones and the rookies will be tested.

Use the 3 more.

The Old Boozser was back | 10:44 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
and Sloan didn't have any decisions to make.
joe | 10:49 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
Loved the game.

Instead of walking the ball up court (like D-Will), Maynor pushed it all night.

Instead of letting the opposing PG beat him time and again (like D-Will), Maynor played defense.

Instead of firing 3's and other bad shots (like D-Will), Maynor got the ball moving into different hands early and often.

If D-Will had played tonight and Boozer had been out, it would have been a loss for the Jazz.

Booz is not the problem. D-Will thinking this is HIS team and spending most of his energy trying to get the stats to finally become an All-Star is the problem.
Exactly! | 11:44 p.m. Nov. 13, 2009
I hate to admit that I totally agree with joe|10:49 p.m.

Is D-Will a better player than Maynor?
Of course not!
Should Maynor start instead of D-Will?
Of course not!
Can D-Will learn something from how Maynor ran the offense in this game?
Most definitely!

Push the ball up the floor, spread the ball around to ALL the other players, take better shots and stay in front of your man.
Hey, even a rookie can do it.
Fedor | 12:58 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
Have you ever wondered if D-Will and the Booz get along? Check out this comment from Booz tonight:

"We ran the system, we set screens, we shared the ball, we moved the ball. If somebody was open, we hit them," Boozer said. "We didn't wait for the assist pass. We just hit the guy that was open, and that makes the offense move crisper."

I think this comment is a thinly veiled slap at the D-Will. "We didn't wait for the assist pass." What is he imply there? He imply that D-Will is in this game for the stats....and tonight they don't worry about this. Maybe I think too much about this.....but you can tell with body language of these two player that they don't get along. I still say let's get rid of the Booz. Nice win Jazz.....too bad back to back game against Cleveland. We will lose by 16 and we won't feel as good as we do tonight.
CJ3 | 1:26 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
"Who's going to take Shaq?"

You mean the Shaq that last season had his best year in the last 5, averaging 18 and almost 8.4? The All-Star Shaq?

Why, Boozer, of course. That is if Sloan stays with what he did last season when the pair met 3 times and Booz had the bulk of the duties defending him.

The matchup is just the type that Booz excels at, when he can get his legs up under a guy and push him off the low block. It's the long-and-talls that he has trouble with, mostly.

Head-to-head last year the Jazz went 2-1 vs Pho with Booz defending Diesel. Two of the three games were post-injured Boozer, and we all know he wasn't up to snuff then. Never the less Boozer put up 16.3 and 12.3 to Shaq's 12.3 and 9. That's almost 6 pts less a game than he averaged vs everyone else.

In the pre-injured game? Booz 21 and 15! to 9 and 5 for Shaq.

Memo can take Z. He's the only guy slower than him.

Eric Maynor better than D-Will??? That is just insane.
jazz fans are not jazzy | 5:09 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
It's been more than 3 months that I read your comments and I'm really exhausetd about them. How can you all say that you are fans ; always criticizing, you want to trade all the team when it's not booze it is millsap. I'm from France and I'm a jazz fan mainly beacuse of boozer presence always suporting all the team.
I think it is better to have a low start than a low finish!!
From my point of view there are two problems:
- PG : Sloan use to play with PG that are playmakers and since D Will is scoring more and more the team plays worse and worse. Remember Stockton he was not a great scorer and focused more on making the team play in a right way. Talk about this with Malone. Now I have the impression that DWill is more focused on scoring...

- Lack of defensive intensity during 48mn: the main issue for this teame currently and explain why they are so incosistent. Each player has to focus on that point.

Go Jazz !

2005, D-will and Andre Owens
The Solution | 6:30 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
Sloan in my opinion doesn't give the rookies on his teams enough of a chance to show what they can do. Now that he was forced to do that in this game, he learns of a pleasant surprise with Maynor and Matthews. While I'm not saying they should take precedence over D-Will once he is back, I am saying that it's time to give them more playing time. They are finally winning on the road for once after all.
Who Really Cares | 6:57 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
Nice win for once, yet the bottom line, who really cares? Is this a top tier team in the West and thus the NBA? No. Are they really going anywhere this season? No. Until the players and the organization show by their actions that they want to contend, this is just a team happy to win over .500 ball so fans are interested, come to the games and the organization is profitable. Playoff team? Probably, a low to mid seed and out in either the 1st or 2nd round. Are you ready for that yet again?
Jon Lisek | 7:15 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
Instead on D'Will MONOPOLIZING possesion of the basketball and walking the ball up slow like Mark Jackson use to do and dribbling and dribbling and practicing his cross over-back-over-back, Eric Maynor moved the ball quickly. He would either pass us into the offense or drive and kick, then everyone would get involved and it was fun to watch. Do not get me wrong......DeRon is an excellent talent.....but it is not beneficial to the overall success of the Utah Jazz to watch him practice his dribbling skils for 18 seconds of the shot clock. After that you are lucky to get one look...usually jacking up an outside shot. Maynor did not care if Brewer or Mathis moved the ball into our offense either. DeRon has to have the ball in his hands and he is usually looking for one man! Maynor, Mathis & Ronnie B were looking for anyone they could find open and guys were moving because the were being rewarded for it by getting the ball. With DeRon, guys do not move and if they do it is with robotic movements like they are just going through the motions. MATHIS IS OUR TWO!
Gracefl | 7:35 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
When all five players are actively passing and cutting, rather than four watching one practice crossover dribbling, the activity level and scoring opportunities are greatly increased.
Li'nel King | 7:35 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
D will does not need to dribble so MUCH!

Let Ron Brew or Mathis start us up now and then if it will catch them OFF GAURD! (pun intended) Let the fellas play some ball... Will. You'll look better too. Let your team get involved. Mathis is the most effective TWO/THREE that I can remember having on the UTAH JAZZ! The man is not flashy he is not an All-Star! He is plain daim effective! Gets to the rim!
Gets to the foul line!
Drains the three!
Rebounds!
Strong Body!
Gaurds their best player!
Always composed!
Never plays outside of himself!
Never shoots outside of the offense!
Will break the offense if he sees a lane!
Drives into paint creating either a score, foul or kick to an open man!

Eric Maynard is a true PG! A little skinny, the man is a DREAM to watch!
Tom Ho Gaurd | 7:43 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
Give Mathis a CONTRACT!

No matter what.....no matter what.....do not....ever....ever......trade Mathis! He will end up being a steadying force......a calming force in a turbulent world.........a strong man.....a real man.....a leader on and off the court for an NBA ball club ala Derek Fischer!

Joe & Exactly - please consider the possibility this health issue with his daughter has been going on for a while and he has had difficulty mentally being 100% in the previous games!
RE: Joe and Exactly | 8:15 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
you are both idiots. the difference in the game is we hit outside shots and Boozer played well. Don't dis on the best point guard in the NBA. It makes you look stupid.
Macnamara | 8:32 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
Deron's twitter...."We need to change somthing, this isn't working. Lineups or whatever"!

Well, it's apparent what the change needs to be. Last night's game should be evidence of that!

He disapointed me by backdooring this whole thing on Twitter. Step up to the players and say what you think. But you're wrong Dude, the change needs to start with YOU!
Basketballogy | 8:43 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
I guess I agree with Joe and Exactly!.

Williams really does appear to be padding his stats for an All Star selection. He must figure that's the only way a small market guy will make it.

One reason Williams overdribbles is he is holding out: looking for the pass that will get him an assist, rather than just a pass to move the ball and the defense.

And lacking defensive motivation certainly hasn't kept Steve Nash off all star teams in the past.

Williams is a great player and I love him, and while I believe he does want to win, he wants HIS first.

Some people (like Todd) don't get why this was a great win. Yes, Philly is a .500 team, but the Jazz don't win on the road, especially this depleted.

More importantly, win or lose, the Jazz should now see (including Williams watching on television from home) that the system, the coach and their teammates, including the rookies, CAN be trusted, and they'll have more success playing like this than they will every man for himself.

Hey DWill, WINNING gets players all star buzz as well.
Jake | 8:57 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009

EASY to understand what happened in Philly. When Deron dominates the basketball and tries to take over the game and goes 1 on 5....You've seen what happens. Ball movement is the key. Setting picks, sharing the ball, trusting in your teammates to make open shots is the way to win.

NOBODY TAKES OVER A GAME........Thats the biggest misconception of all time. IT'S A "TEAM" GAME!!!!

Take away the other four players and you've got nothing! Willams has proved that.
Houdini | 8:59 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
Good win, hope to see lot`s of Fes tonight against the "Shaqtus" Cleveland is big up-front when Z and Shaq are in together along with Varesho,Start Williams,Matthews,AK,Memo and Fes,GO JAZZ,GO YEWTS,GO "anyone playing the Lakers"
Miles | 9:01 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
Trade Williams. OK but if you have blinders on, you think the Dwill plays defense and is not selfish. Dwill needs to wake up to the fact that if you want to be an allstar, make your team better.

Trust me, against Cleveland, Maynor will stink it up and so will Matthews. That's how rookies play.

I have always said, when you get everyone involved on the offense, then the defense improves because the player's heads are in the game. When Dwill and Boozer fun pick and roll every play, everyone goes to sleep. It's a team game, share the ball and get back and play defense.
Nevada fan | 9:06 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
Its was great to see a win (since I bought the NBA league pass),but before I break out the champagne just remember it was the "76ers". Tonight will be the test.
To Sloan: Use the two big young guys on Shack.
Post Game Sloan Statement | 9:14 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
Jerry said post game that the players put themselves behing the eight ball by playing like we all hoped they could and should. However I would also like for Sloan to notice that inspite of a few mistakes by the rooks(veterans do it also) that a rookie can play in his system if he just lets them play like last night, and let them play through a mistake or two. Please play your youngsters more early in the season Jerry, and I believe that even you will be impressed and rewared by their play. All of the players in this league make mistakes during every game every night. Just call a time out if it is too much and help them instead of condem them. Nice game rooks!
RE: Joe | 9:28 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
Sorry, buddy! It's not D-Will's fault the Jazz have been losing. The players have been playing miserably, and they just happened to show up last night against Philly. They were making shots, playing some D (Boozer three steals...Wow), and playing without fear. You can't just take one game and say, "Oh, they played great tonight in the absence of D-Will, so therefore it's Deron's fault." It's only one game.

That said, I do hope this game provides the other team members so confidence, so when Williams gets back, they can turn his passes into assists. So far this season, everybody has looked a little scared, with the exception of Williams and Mr. Diamond in the Rough Matthews.
Dang that Jerry Sloan | 9:46 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
That 1000+ game winning, hall of fame member totally stupid Jerry Sloan knows nothing about basketball. The Jazz need one of the above posters who REALLY knows basketball to be the Head Coach.
Tyler | 9:50 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
Joe & Exactly are typical people who don't understand the game of basketball, yet still try to speak out thinking they do.

Maynor played great in D-will's absence. But Deron is a leader and a SMART point guard. I think Maynor will prove to be a great back-up and occasional starter when needed. But Deron has intangibles that no-one can replace. Deron actually gets our team into the offense, and gets people involved. What is great about Maynor is when he comes into the game, he brings a different style, which requires the other team to adjust, which isn't always that easy.

If you truly understood the game of basketball, you wouldn't let one game change your mind about an all-star, and you certainly wouldn't blame a win on the absence of your team's best player. The reason they won tonight has nothing to do with pushing the ball up the court, it has to do solely with the heart of the players. There was intensity, togetherness and defense all game long. It's just too bad that the players realized this 9 games into the season, not 1.
IDjazz12 | 9:51 a.m. Nov. 14, 2009
RE:Joe & Exactly.

I tend to see the opposite way. I think that when Dwill is on the floor players expect him to take over and do it all and are more apt to throw the ball right back at him when the clock is running down or expect him to create everything which makes him totally exhausted by the end of the game.
Against the Sixers they looked to take ownership of the ball as a team because they knew they could not rely on Maynor they same way. The outcome was the ball moved like it never has before and other players willing to create. In turn the defensive end becomes a lot easier because nothing is rushed or scrambled.

Those saying Sloan is not to blame still!!! WRONG
I have never doubted the system can work but Sloan was forced to play players and lineups that he would never do or even remotely try which is idiotic. I have always said if some players are not getting it done nothing motivates like a cold chair on the bench.
