Joseph Cramer, M.D.: Re-examining history brings important insights

We were not founded on genocide against american indians. Many have assimilated through intermarriage. That is a myth. What were the Europeans supposed to do the Pilgrims and such go back to Europe because INdians were here first.

They were way more violent towards each other long before Europeans arrived. How many wars have they fought since Europeans arrived here.

History has always been written by "the winners". IF Germany had won World War II the world's history books would have had a completely different slant. People will ALWAYS write the history that THEY want to see, read, and hear. Losers can only hope that one day.....they get to be the "winners" and then they will get to rewrite history. C'est la vie. (Yes, just ask the French).

I don't think Dr. Cramer was promoting "historical revisionism" or the idea that there was a campaign of genocide against the American Indian. He merely pointed out that some historians are rethinking the past. More importantly, we're pained by thinking about our own pasts so that we often rewrite our own life histories, or at least omit parts we're prefer not to remember or make known. So I think both of you commentors need to ease off a bit and reread the article. It was worth thinking about. And remember what the kindly Gen. William Sherman, who led burning and pillaging of the South during the Civil War, said about the Indians: the only good one is a dead one. No, there was no genocide going on. Just keep reading your good ol' boy history books.

Just one example of revisionism. That the Crusades were an unjustified attack on the middle east. The Crusades were a counter attack fro the Jihad angainst the largely Christian Byzantime Empire.

What we do better than examine history is to rewrite it. If one has the money and time one can create history to his/her/its own likeing. Those who do it best are institutions like governments and churches.

I am always surprised by what word, phrase, or tidbit posters latch onto in an article. True, as I read this article I assumed someone would complain about revisionist historians, but as I continued reading I really thought this article would escape that prediction.
