There is a lack of interest and other much higher priorities that is why there will not be enough signatures. A real cop out to say we did not want it before the legislature anyway. Redistricting is a political process and to take elected officials out of the loop would create a worse gerry mander mess. Why not focus on the economy and taxes?
Both are well thought out concepts. To say they were "copping out" is your own personal traits showing through. I would not want legislators dealing with the one because of the majority do not ever want to change something that is an advantage. That is why Waddoups wants just full discloser not limits. Take it to the people on both and let them decide how the government should operate.
The "Ethics" proposal is very deceptive, as with many petitions. The title is all very nice sounding, and who would not be in favor of "ethics"?
However, the devilish details are seldom explained by people collecting signatures. If studied in detail the "ethics" proposal is a very BAD SCHEME!
Craig, I respectfully disagree that it is possible to create a worse gerry mandering mess. Having a senate district that includes a small portion of Tooele, and extends to Salina, is about as bad a mess as you can make. I agree that the ethics proposal has some issues that are problematic. But the redistricting is critical to the fairness for Utah voters.
Where do we sign the petition? They haven't asked me to do it yet. I'll gladly sign it.
this initiative is a wolf in sheep's clothing. it sounds nice but would create the greatest transfer of political power in the history of the state.
Quite frankly I am ready to sign for both initiatives. I believe the true gerrymandering occured with the redistricting a few years ago that all but guaranteed a majority GOP control of both the house and senate.
This is fine if this is how the votes turely pan out; however, to divide neighborhoods literally in half with the intent of creating a GOP voter majority in each district is no different than voter fraud in my opinion.
As far as ethics go, the legislature has had chance after chance to self govern and pass meaningful ethics reform and have failed to do so each and every time. As they say, you snooze you loose. Maybe next time they won't be so lazy.
@ Bull Hockey and @ Please Don't Sign It. You claim these petitions have secret hidden agendas but don't explain what these agendas or dangers are. If you know something, why aren't you sharing so the rest of us can make an informed decision?
I believe in ethics and honesty but if you READ THIS PETITION, it is just the opposite of ethics and honesty. What we need is a law to force all petitions to be written in laymans terms with no hidden agendA SO YOU KNOW WHAT IT MEANS BY READING A SMALL PARAGRAPH instead of a legal journal.
This ethics bill creates a commission that has NO checks or balances. The commission would be accountable to nobody. This ethics initiative would create czars in Utah similar to the czars in our national government. Sound ethical? I dont think so.
