With the blatant and ever more apparent trend of the secular world's hijacking of Christmas and turning it into something its not,(Look them right in the eye and lie to children about the reality of Santa, demanding employees say "Happy Holidays" and not "Merry Christmas", snowmen ad nauseam.....)its refreshing this group seeks to promote the Nativity and give people reason to enjoy and remember that despite whatever the world does to convince people otherwise--that Christ IS what Christmas is about.
Oh, I wish I had known about this event before this article came out. I would have loved to have been able to attend. I, too, love creches and have a collection of them. Sadly, I've run out of room in my home and can't put them all out at Christmas time. As nice as the jolly Santa Claus is, I refuse to replace a creche with Santas, snowmen, or moose which is happening now in the commercial, non-religious world.
Great Idea, but we have been doing it in the Houston area for year. Might be the first for this organization but Stakes in Houston have been holding displays annually and we rotate from one Stake to another. Last time our Stake had more than 200 displays and a live nativty outside. We drew thousands. We are also west of the river.
yes our stake did this in Ohio as well BUT we were not a convention where you could buy pieces and we didn't have guest speakers etc. This is different the article stated it's a convention. I can't wait to go see it.
seems exorbitant. May well be worth it, but simply can not afford such a luxury. Perhaps $5 to go in and walk around and enjoy the displays.
The Rancho Santa Margarita CA Stake has hosted the largest Creche showing west of Mississippi for 10 years in conjunction with its annual Follow the Star presentation in conducts as a gift to the community. It is on a hill that overlooks the Saddleback Church and South Orange County. Gorgeous setting for the production and show. Don't miss it this year either.
Midway City up by Heber has been holding a Creche event for over ten years with hundreds of beautiful exhibits. It is the first weekend in December.
Creche! Give us a break from the snobbery. Why can't we just use the English word, nativity?
Sounds like this would have been a very beautiful event to attend. But $60? Was this an intentional attempt to make the attendance exclusive?
If you read the article closely, it doesn't say that this is the first exhibit west of the Mississippi, it is the first time that this organization, Friends of the Creche, has held their convention west of the Mississippi.
"Creche! Give us a break from the snobbery. Why can't we just use the English word, nativity?"
Yes, it's snobbery. It shows a certain level of education.
BH: The term "Nativity" is of Latin origin, not English. It is a derivitive of the Latin word "nativas", meaning process or circumstances of being born or place of origin.
Last night I atteded the one in City of Orange, was free, beautiful and so educative creches from all around the word, the music numbers very delightful, the one that I admire most was a mexican food bowl made of clay and the small pieces inside very creative, next year I ll share mine.
