Travel?!? | 1:15 p.m. Nov. 12, 2009
I don't think the long trip will be a big deal for San Juan. They did it last week and do it almost every week. Look at their region. I also think they have that great small town support that a lot of us have meaning they will have a ton of fans there. Last year 1A and 2A overwhelmed Timpview's facilities. But... the question is will it help SS? Even the casual fan will have no problem dropping down into the valley to catch the game without a thought of a motel. The players will be able to go to school Friday, sleep at home and take a short bus ride to the game. Weather shouldn't be an issue either considering the snow they had to plow of the field for the quarterfinals in Blanding. Should come down to two great teams and one great show.

The travel won't effect San Juan they are used to traveling for the playoffs. If I remember correctly when they won in 2006 there was a story about how they had traveled more than any school in the state for football. I do think however that UHSAA should think about this a little more and come up with several options for championship game to make it more of a neutral sight. The year before their last championship SJ played Grand in the finals. UHSAA scheduled the game in Cedar so they both had to travel 300 miles to play each other when they are only 70 miles from each other. In these hard economic times UHSAA should consider some changes.

I have never thought travel hurt teams that do it all the time like San Juan. But I agree the UHSAA should have several options it might not effect the team but it makes a huge diffrence for the fans and parents. SS parents will pay a few bucks for gas and maybe a meal. SJ parents will have 5-6 meals, motel, big gas bill. But its nice to let these boys play on turf too. Why are the 345A semis at rice eccles and not the 12A championships?
Food for thought | 2:51 p.m. Nov. 12, 2009
South Summit has traveled about 2400 miles/52 hours this year, including this weekend. San Juan, after this weekend, will have gone 3000 miles/62 hours. 600 miles over 11 weeks is not as significant as some are trying to make it sound. I think all teams have to travel their fair share so it shouldn't have that big of an affect.
RE: Food for thought | 3:03 p.m. Nov. 12, 2009
We didn't say it was a huge deal for San Juan they are used to it. What we said is that UHSAA should look at the cost for the fans as well and the expense to the schools. This weekend is no big deal to South Summit but San Juan has to come up on friday and pay for a motel room for the entire team and meals and the same for the fans. But as we have seen UHSAA does not care one bit about 1 and 2A. If they are going to make them travel clear to Salt Lake let them play on the hill like 3, 4 and 5A.
RE: Food for thought | 3:23 p.m. Nov. 12, 2009
I dont know where you got your numbers of traveling but they are way off. South Summit has traveled 1072 miles or 16 hours this season and San Juan has traveled 1484 miles or 21 hours. Those hours were based if you traveled 70 miles per hour. So that number could be different. Bottom line is San Juan has traveled plenty. We know how to play whether we have to travel a lot or not. South Summit will still get our A game.
Re: RE: food for thought | 3:37 p.m. Nov. 12, 2009
I'm pretty sure you didn't include return trips.....that's why your numbers are so much lower. If you notice they're roughly half as much. I took the numbers from google map.

just play the darn game and quit being a crybaby!
RE: food for nothing | 4:14 p.m. Nov. 12, 2009
No one is crying we just want UHSAA to think about these things. I am sure the stands will be full on both sides for this game. San Juan always brings the majority of the town with them where ever they play.
Championship Venue | 5:11 p.m. Nov. 12, 2009
Although I have been frustrated with the choices of venues for playoff games I am just not sure that UHSAA could really pick several different places only to cancel out on most of them at the last moment. I know as we have discussed this in years past that people have mentioned that there is a cost involved that would also make picking several places an issue. U of U seems to be a good fit but for some reason they haven’t been able to make that happen. SUU has great facilities but even there the away stands can be a little small just ask Kanab and Grand in 05. Juan Diego wasn’t bad at all but again SJ barely fit in the away stands in 06. Let us not even discuss Timpview and hope Alta is a positive experience. Rio Tinto was supposed to be the plan for 1A & 2A and in later years everyone would play there. Wonder what happened…... But hey it should be a great Saturday for football!!!

If we are talking about small town support. Did you not see how many fans the wildcats had there last weekend. Everyone is kamas will be at the game!!!

For everyone worried about making the UHSAA come up with several options for state venues: You obviously don't understand the procedure. The UHSAA has the places usually set up and contracts signed long before the season begins. Why? Because they have to ensure there will be a place to play that will hold the numbers of fans that will travel for 1A and 2A championships. You can't just change it a week before the final game once you find out who is playing.

I am from Blanding. When SJ played Grand a couple of years ago in SUU, I actually spoke with the UHSAA top executive who was in Blanding. I asked if the UHSAA was really looking at a Carbon site change, as was the rumor. He told me many places in the state would not house the numbers of people going when SJ was involved. He stated that it doesn't matter where it is, but Blanding fans come from everywhere and that is why there could never be a smaller venue. Sounds like good planning on their part. Think back to 2000 when the size of the fans meant both towns were empty.

I have watch 1A and 2A teams be sent to play their championship games in bigger school venues for years. This is really a thorn in my side. The UHSAA claims that the small schools don't generate enough gate to justify a college stadium. This is not true. I saw Timpview and Mountain Crest on TV and the stands at Utah were empty. The small schools will put just as many butts in the seats as the big schools because for us, high school sports are a part of life. The big schools only bring the team, their parents, and studentbody. Small schools bring their whole town! Unfortunately, the UHSAA tend to cater to the big schools and couldn't care less about the little schools. Our kids work just as hard to get to the championship. They should have the same quality of facilities for their game. SS has a better field than Alta.
